He Got Engaged to His First Love On the Day I Died-Chapter 122: Likes to Be a Cuckold
Soon, the painting was finished.
"Not bad. You’re an art teacher, after all." He reached for the painting and studied it carefully. "Miss Childs, your artistic skill is far greater than you let on. It looks a lot like the work of the international master, MOMO."
Natalie Morgan’s eyes darkened.
In a cold, flat tone, she said, "I’m glad Mr. Grant is satisfied."
Theodore Grant showed the painting to Thomas Morgan. "Do you like it?"
Thomas Morgan looked at the portrait of himself and clapped happily, like a child who had just received a precious gift.
"You were on your best behavior today," Theodore Grant said with a smile, skillfully unwrapping a lollipop and gently placing it in Thomas Morgan’s mouth.
Natalie Morgan couldn’t put a name to the feeling stirring within her.
It was a mixture of hatred, resentment, and disgust at Theodore Grant’s hypocritical act.
But she couldn’t say a word.
She couldn’t show any of it.
Theodore Grant turned to look at Natalie Morgan. "He’s telling me, ’Thank you, sister.’"
Natalie Morgan’s lips twitched.
She silently packed her things and walked out the door.
"Miss Childs," Theodore Grant called, following her out. "Are you free tonight? Let me treat you to dinner."
"I’m not," she refused, her face cold.
The man chuckled, seemingly unsurprised. "That was a quick refusal."
"Mr. Grant and I have no relationship to speak of. Why would we have dinner together?" She picked up her things and walked away without looking back.
Weller Kendall walked over, scratching his head as he watched Natalie Morgan’s departing figure. "Mr. Grant, is she really... your wife?"
"If she really were, do you think she would ever come back to me?"
After asking the question, Theodore Grant gave a bitter laugh.
’He really gave himself too much credit.’
’He was just a man someone would fake their own death to escape. He was no prize.’
Weller Kendall also thought the chances were slim to none.
"Mr. Grant, if she really is your wife, are you sure you want her back? When she passed away, didn’t you regret the things you did to her? Besides, in the past three years, so much has happened to her..."
He stuck a cigarette between his lips, cupped his hand against the wind to light it, and took a deep drag.
’It seemed he needed to clear his head.’
「A few days later.」
Back in Riverden, Theodore Grant saw a picture and caption Felix Finch had posted to his feed.
The caption read: "Wife and child."
Below it were photos of a family of three at an amusement park: one of the woman holding the baby, one of him holding the baby, and a group photo of all three of them.
A sudden surge of anger—from where, Theodore Grant didn’t know—made him slam his phone down on the desk.
Weller Kendall, who had just entered the office, flinched at the sound.
"Mr. Grant, what’s wrong?"
Theodore Grant’s face was thunderous, and even his voice carried an unusual, heavy tone. "Look at what Felix Finch posted."
’Felix Finch posted something?’
Weller Kendall pulled out his own phone.
He specifically searched for Felix Finch’s name and opened his feed.
Aside from a few routine articles on medical topics, there was nothing else.
"Mr. Grant, Dr. Finch hasn’t posted anything."
"Hasn’t posted anything?" ’Was he seeing things?’
He irritably snatched his phone back, found the post, and tossed it to Weller Kendall. "What do you mean he hasn’t posted anything? Look at this."
Weller Kendall caught the phone and turned it over to look at the screen.
’Wife and child?’
’Could Felix Finch have set the post’s visibility to Theodore Grant only?’
’Was it just to piss him off?’
"Mr. Grant, I don’t see any of this on my feed from Dr. Finch. Could it be..."
Theodore Grant understood then. Felix Finch was provoking him.
He suddenly laughed.
"The fact that he’d make a post visible only to me, doesn’t that just prove it? Willow Childs is Natalie Morgan, and Natalie Morgan is this Willow Childs. Doesn’t this also give me reason to suspect that when Natalie faked her death back then, Felix Finch was her invaluable accomplice?"
The deduction left Weller Kendall stunned.
He blinked blankly.
’It made perfect sense.’
"Mr. Grant, I’ll immediately look into how many times Dr. Finch has traveled to Fenchest over the past three years, especially the date of his first trip."
Weller Kendall was just about to leave.
But Theodore Grant stopped him.
"No need to investigate. I’ll ask him myself." He took his coat from the rack. "Come with me to see Felix Finch."
The athletic field of a high school in Riverden was deserted.
Theodore Grant had arranged to meet Felix Finch here.
"What’s the matter, jealous?" Felix Finch’s suit jacket was draped over his arm, and he looked coolly composed. "I already told you, her name is Willow Childs, not your dead wife. Just because they look alike, I can’t even have the right to post on my own feed?"
A flash of hostility crossed Theodore Grant’s eyes before he smiled. "True, you have the right to make a post visible only to me. You have the right to treat another man’s child as your own. And you most certainly have the right to lie with a straight face."
"Finch, we both know perfectly well whether she’s Willow Childs or Natalie Morgan. But I have to admit, I’m impressed. Your little bait-and-switch back then, your grand deception—it was truly a masterful performance."
His gaze turned colder by the second.
The smile remained at the corners of his eyes, but it held a bone-chilling coldness.
Felix Finch chuckled and walked up to Theodore Grant.
He raised an eyebrow slightly, not bothering to argue, and simply nodded. "Theodore, you’re as sharp as ever. However, Natalie Morgan died a long time ago. The woman you see now is named Willow Childs. Over the past three years, she and I have developed a very deep bond. Even if you’re interested in this woman who happens to look like Natalie, she would never choose you. It’s only a matter of time before she marries me."
"You’re that confident?" His dark eyes narrowed.
"She’s very dependent on me." A smile spread across his face as he reached out and patted Theodore Grant’s shoulder. "Oh, how could I forget? You wouldn’t know what it feels like to have a woman rely on you with her whole heart."
A mocking, inscrutable smile flashed in the depths of Felix Finch’s eyes.
To his surprise, however, Theodore Grant wasn’t provoked. The man’s calmness was unexpected.
"When Willow Childs first arrived in Fenchest, life wasn’t easy. She married an old man and even had a son... Knowing you, you could never accept a woman like that. But I can. I can embrace everything about her, unconditionally. That’s why she depends on me."
"So, Dr. Finch enjoys playing daddy to other people’s children," Theodore Grant said, his eyes filled with contempt.
Felix Finch gave the man before him a meaningful look. "The child is still young. He has no memory of his father. If I raise him, he’ll be my son, and I’ll be his real father."
’How magnanimous of him.’
Theodore Grant felt he couldn’t compare.
But why would Felix Finch accept all this unconditionally?
Was it love?
As far as Theodore Grant knew, Felix Finch had an arranged marriage to consider.
He didn’t have the right to choose his own spouse.
’Is he preparing to defy his entire family?’
"It seems I should grant you your wish, then."
Felix Finch took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. "It would be for the best if you did. But if you can’t, I hope you won’t try to sabotage things, Mr. Grant."
"Dr. Finch, are you saying this because you’re still resentful about how the Grant Group suppressed the Finch Group a few years ago?"
Felix Finch’s expression flickered, but he maintained his gentle and refined demeanor. "You’re not wrong. Even if there was a fault, the fault was mine. The Finch Family was not at fault, and the Finch Group certainly wasn’t. You shouldn’t have driven the Finch Group out of Riverden."
"And what if I said..." His eyes darkened slightly. "...that I could also make it impossible for the Finch Group to survive in Fenchest? What would you think then?"
