He Got Engaged to His First Love On the Day I Died-Chapter 138: She Didn’t Even Glance at Me
Theodore Grant slowly got to his feet.
He took off his jacket, tossed it to Weller Kendall, and ordered, "Call for rescue. And watch her."
"Mr. Grant, your injuries..."
He still hadn’t fully recovered from the stab wound Natalie Morgan had given him.
’If he dives in now, will he even make it back alive?’
Without a second thought, Theodore Grant leaped into the sea.
The wind howled across the ocean’s surface as the rain raged on.
Felix Finch was the first to return. "Natalie, I still haven’t found Momo."
His face was turning purple from the cold.
He looked so pitiful it was hard to blame him for anything.
Natalie Morgan gave a faint nod, her gaze fixed on the spot where Theodore Grant had vanished into the water.
The child was so little, and he’d been in the ocean for so long. She didn’t know if he could possibly survive. She was terrified, her legs felt like jelly.
Weller Kendall stood behind her, holding an umbrella over her head, his face etched with worry.
"Don’t worry, Momo will be all right," Felix Finch said, trying to comfort Natalie Morgan.
But she just stared, sorrowful and frantic, at the gaping maw of the ocean.
The tears had never stopped streaming from her eyes.
She’d never imagined that one day she would be pinning all her hopes on Theodore Grant.
’Will he really give it his all?’
’Can I trust him?’
But right now, what else could she do but trust him?
"Miss Childs, perhaps you should go rest on our yacht for a bit." Weller Kendall had already called for help, and the rescue team should be arriving soon. "Since Mr. Grant made you a promise, he’ll give it one hundred percent."
Natalie Morgan shook her head. She wasn’t going anywhere until she saw her son.
The man who had leaped into the ocean relied on his experience, descending deeper and deeper into the water.
The current was strong, and he wasn’t sure if he could find the boy.
Beneath the raging surface, the world was quiet.
He searched everywhere for the little boy’s figure.
The seawater was bone-chilling, and Theodore Grant’s stamina was starting to give out. Just as he was about to lose hope, he spotted the boy’s figure.
He swam over quickly, gathered the boy in his arms, and headed for the surface.
When she saw Theodore Grant surfacing with the boy, Natalie Morgan, heedless of her own frozen body, jumped into the sea to help him.
Felix Finch’s eyes darkened, a shadow falling over his expression.
Once the boy was brought ashore, he was given basic first aid. After they confirmed he still had vital signs, the rescue team took him away to the city for medical treatment.
Natalie Morgan went with them.
The man lay exhausted on the beach, letting the rain drench his body.
"Mr. Grant, are you all right?" Weller Kendall held an umbrella over his head.
Theodore Grant was utterly spent. He stared at the dark, oppressive clouds blanketing the sea, a heavy weight settling over him.
After a moment, a bitter, self-mocking smile touched his lips. "She didn’t even glance at me to see if I was still alive."
His words were truly heartbreaking.
Natalie Morgan’s focus was entirely on her son. She truly didn’t seem to care whether Theodore Grant lived or died.
And yet, he had saved a child who meant nothing to him, all for her sake.
Weller Kendall felt a strange pang in his heart. "Maybe she..."
He wanted to make an excuse for Natalie Morgan, to ease the pain in Theodore Grant’s heart.
But he found he couldn’t come up with a single plausible excuse.
Perhaps she would just break their verbal agreement in the blink of an eye, and Theodore Grant wouldn’t be able to do anything about it.
「After Natalie Morgan returned to Fenchest.」
She never left her son’s side.
The doctors kept saying the boy was incredibly lucky; any other child would have died after being in the sea for so long.
They said the child was destined for a fortunate life.
She was in no mood to hear any of it. She only began to relax once the little guy was out of danger and settled in a private room.
Felix Finch had been with her the whole time.
He was thoughtful and attentive, soothing her panicked heart.
"Felix, you should go home and rest. I’ll stay here with my son." She just wanted to be alone with the boy for a while. "You’re tired, too."
"I’m fine. I’m not tired."
"Go home, Felix. I’ll call you if anything happens."
Felix Finch didn’t press the issue. He gently patted her shoulder. "All right. Don’t wear yourself out. When he’s asleep, you should get some rest, too. I’ll head back for now."
"Okay."
「After Felix Finch left.」
Natalie Morgan’s body went limp, and she sagged against the hospital bed.
She gripped her son’s hand tightly as waves of relief, of having him back from the brink, washed over her.
’How could he have fallen into the sea?’
’Was it really just because of the storm?’
"COUGH, COUGH." The little boy stirred awake.
Natalie Morgan reached out and gently stroked the boy’s small face, her eyes red-rimmed. "Oh, you. You scared Mommy to death."
"Mommy." At his age, Momo didn’t fully grasp fear, but he knew he had fallen into the sea and that his mommy was worried. "Don’t cry. I’ll be more careful from now on."
"Why didn’t you stay close to Mr. Finch?" She stroked his little face gently, not wanting to blame him, but just to understand what had happened. "Tell Mommy, how did you fall into the sea?"
"Mommy..." The little boy blinked his big, dark eyes. "...It was Mr. Finch... he’s the one who threw me in."
It was as if something exploded in Natalie Morgan’s head.
Her pupils contracted sharply. She asked in disbelief, "You’re saying Mr. Finch threw you into the sea? Momo, little boys don’t tell lies, you know."
"Mommy, Mr. Finch was holding me, making me fly like an airplane... and then I... I flew right out." He sounded completely sincere.
But that wasn’t what Felix Finch had said at all.
’If it’s true, why would he do that?’
’Was it an accident? Was he just afraid I’d blame him?’
’We’re all adults. No one would be so childish as to lie just to avoid being blamed.’
’So... was it on purpose?’
’If he really did it on purpose...’
’Why? Why would he hurt a child?’
Natalie Morgan shook her head. She truly couldn’t understand.
She forced a smile and ruffled her son’s hair. "So, was my little Momo scared?"
"At first, I was scared. But then I saw an uncle swim over, and he held me, and then I wasn’t scared anymore," the little fellow said with surprising clarity.
The "uncle" who saved him was Theodore Grant.
’He actually remembers.’
"Good boy. Get some sleep now. Mommy’s right here with you."
"Okay."
Natalie Morgan was now lost in a fog of deep confusion and bewilderment.
She and Felix Finch had known each other for years. Three years ago, he had helped her fake her death and escape to Fenchest.
He had been her lifeline in her most desperate hour.
In her heart, Felix Finch was like a ray of winter sunshine. His care and help had always been there right when she needed them most, warming her heart when it had grown cold.
Why would the person who had given her hope and comfort countless times want to harm her most precious child?
He knew, better than anyone, that her son was her entire life.
How could the person who once brought her such warmth become so terrifying?
’Is this all a misunderstanding?’
Natalie Morgan couldn’t figure it out. No matter how she looked at it, it made no sense.
「During the days her son was hospitalized.」
Felix Finch came to visit a few times, and she clearly noticed that whenever he tried to get close to her son, the boy would intentionally shy away from him.
She could see the fear in her son’s eyes even more clearly.
Several times, she was on the verge of confronting Felix Finch, of demanding to know why he had hurt her child, but she always managed to restrain herself.
Until she knew the whole truth, confronting him would only make things more complicated and difficult to prove.
The person she once trusted most had become the most dangerous threat.
This collapse of trust shattered Natalie Morgan’s newly mended heart, leaving it in pieces once again.
’What in this world is even real anymore?’
