He Got Engaged to His First Love On the Day I Died-Chapter 141: I Can Support My Son Myself
The woman shook her head indifferently. "It’s just a job. It doesn’t matter whether I like it or not."
"I think you have the expertise to excel at this job. But if you don’t like it, I can move you to a different department."
"This one is fine."
Without a glance at the salary or a close look at the stock options, she took the pen and signed her name.
After signing, she handed the contract back to Theodore Grant. "I’ll start as soon as I get my son settled."
"Riverden has plenty of kindergartens—boarding, day school, a wide range of quality. If you need help, I can..."
Natalie Morgan rejected his "kindness." "That won’t be necessary. I can handle it myself."
She didn’t have much money.
But she wasn’t so poor that she couldn’t afford a decent kindergarten.
He held out a card to her. "Use this for the kid’s tuition."
"That’s not necessary," she said, her tone calm and detached.
"I don’t mean anything else by it." He just didn’t want to see her in a difficult spot.
Natalie Morgan gave him a cold look, unconvinced of his good intentions. "He’s my son. I can provide for him."
"Why do you have to be so hostile towards me?" He was a little hurt.
"My child has nothing to do with you."
Theodore Grant was speechless.
He couldn’t argue with that logic.
The child wasn’t his.
But he wanted to be good to Natalie, better even, yet she repeatedly pushed him away.
"What does our relationship have to with it? It’s not like I can’t afford his tuition." 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
"Mr. Grant, you should save your money for your own future children." She was completely merciless.
’Fine, if she doesn’t want it.’
In a huff, he snatched back the card, grabbed his jacket, and drove to work.
Natalie Morgan went upstairs to wake Momo. After breakfast, she played with him for a little while before heading out.
Riverden had the best educational resources.
Choosing a kindergarten was a mentally and physically draining task.
She checked a few but wasn’t very satisfied.
In the end, she bit the bullet and chose a private kindergarten. The tuition was steep, but the boarding, meals, and education were considered some of the best.
Momo was still so young, and she didn’t want to shortchange him.
Standing at a street corner, she was about to hail a cab home.
She looked up...
It was Felix Finch.
’What’s he doing here?’
"Felix." Her expression remained neutral, though with a faint hint of surprise. "What are you..."
"I heard you went back to Theodore Grant." His expression was grim, his tone laced with disapproval. "How could you be so foolish? Did he threaten you? Just tell me, and I’ll go have a word with him."
Felix’s agitation seemed a bit excessive.
He was usually so gentle and calm in these situations, sometimes even putting in a good word for Theodore.
"He saved Momo the other day. I’m grateful, so I agreed to work by his side for a while. Don’t read too much into it."
Natalie said, downplaying the situation.
But Felix’s brow only furrowed deeper. "Is it just work? You’ve already moved back into the Grant estate."
"It involves some housekeeping duties," she said without elaborating.
"You should have talked to me first." A familiar look of pain filled his eyes. "There are other ways to repay a debt of gratitude. A sacrifice like this is too great."
"It’s hardly a sacrifice. I just don’t like being indebted to anyone."
She gave him a look that said, ’You know how I am.’
Felix’s lips parted as if to say something, but it all boiled down to one thing. "I’m sorry, Natalie. There’s something I need to apologize for."
"What is it, Felix?"
"It’s about... when Momo had his accident..." His eyes reddened as if in great pain. "...The truth is, Momo fell into the sea while we were playing. I lied. I’m so sorry."
’So that’s what this is about.’
’This must be what Momo meant when he said Felix ’threw’ him.’
’His coming forward to admit it now proves his conscience is clear.’
’Does this mean I shouldn’t suspect he did it on purpose, or that he had some kind of ulterior motive?’
Natalie Morgan didn’t speak for a moment.
Felix quickly explained, "We were playing a ’flying’ game. The wind was so strong, I lost my grip for a second, and then the wind capsized the boat. I was afraid you’d blame me... I’m truly sorry. And I’m sorry to Momo, too."
"If I hadn’t lost my grip and dropped Momo into the sea, you wouldn’t have had to beg Theodore Grant to save him, and he wouldn’t have been able to take advantage of your desperation to make such an outrageous demand..."
Felix grabbed Natalie’s hand emotionally, gave a sharp tug, and pulled her into his arms. "I’m sorry, Natalie. Can you forgive me?"
Natalie’s body stiffened, resisting the embrace.
But she didn’t push him away. "Felix, you said it was an accident. And with the storm that day, no one wanted that to happen."
"I don’t know what came over me, to lie to you like that." He gazed at her with deep affection, his eyes filled with apology. "Can you forgive me?"
"Momo is fine." She gave a slight smile.
"Don’t worry. I’ll get Theodore Grant to let you go soon."
Natalie just smiled faintly and said nothing more.
Felix’s phone vibrated. He took a call, then bid Natalie farewell.
Watching his car pull away, Natalie thought for a moment before telling the cab driver, "Driver, follow that car."
The taxi followed Felix’s car at a discreet distance, turning into a private restaurant.
She stealthily followed him inside.
She had been to this restaurant before. Felix had likely booked a VIP room at the back to meet someone for business.
She saw him push open a door, and someone came out to talk to him.
It was Sean Lane.
’Felix Finch and Sean Lane? Why are they together?’
’Judging by how comfortably they were talking, this probably isn’t the first time they’ve met.’
The door to the private room swung shut.
And the two men vanished from Natalie’s line of sight.
On the way back, Natalie’s mind was reeling.
Was it the situation that was becoming more baffling, or was it Felix himself?
Felix and Sean Lane meeting didn’t necessarily mean anything, of course.
But there were still too many things that didn’t add up.
’Could it be... they share some kind of unspeakable secret?’
She really couldn’t figure it out. She couldn’t make sense of it at all.
After arranging things for Momo,
Natalie finally had one less thing to worry about.
The newly established auction house didn’t have much work to do yet.
During the day, she mostly slacked off at the office.
After work, she would help the household staff with cleaning and cooking.
But Theodore Grant usually didn’t come back for dinner.
Sometimes, she would deliberately stay late at the office before going home.
"Manager Childs, these are all the lots prepared for the upcoming auction. Please take a look. If there are no problems, I’ll move on to the next task."
Her employee, Henry Hughes, was a recent graduate hired from a campus recruitment drive.
He was young, energetic, and down-to-earth. He always came in early and left late, radiating a can-do attitude.
Natalie Morgan took the itemized list from him, glanced over it, and signed her name. "Looks good."
As she handed it back, she asked casually, "Working late again?"
"I just want to get familiar with the workflow as quickly as possible." He scratched his head, slightly embarrassed. "Manager Childs, what about you? How come you haven’t left yet?"
