Chapter 156: Chapter 156: Not an Accident, but Premeditated Murder

"Get out of the car. I’ll go by myself." He seemed to have made up his mind. "This time... if I don’t make it back, you need to remember: help my sister run the Grant Group. When the kid grows up, if he’s got what it takes, let him join the company. If not, just make sure he doesn’t starve to death."

Weller Kendall’s heart clenched.

’This sounds like he’s settling his final affairs.’

"Mr. Grant, what are you thinking of doing? We can find another way."

Weller Kendall gripped Theodore Grant’s arm tightly. Without Theodore Grant, how could two women like Claire Grant and Natalie Morgan possibly be a match for Sean Lane?

"I’ve already thought of a way." He calmly pushed Weller Kendall away. His voice was filled with despair and resignation, yet it was perfectly calm. "I’m a disposable father, but a child can’t be without their mother."

"Mr. Grant, don’t do anything rash!" Weller Kendall was on the verge of tears. "Here, let me handle this. I’ll go in your place. The Grant Group can’t lose you. I can do it."

"Weller Kendall." Theodore Grant didn’t want to waste any more time on this. He looked at him sternly. "Remember what I said."

He pulled open the driver’s side door, got in, and slammed it shut.

He floored the accelerator and sped off.

Weller Kendall was frantic, not knowing what to do.

Meanwhile, Henry Hughes, driving on the highway, also discovered there was a problem with the car.

"Manager Childs, the brakes aren’t working! No matter how hard I stomp on them, nothing happens. The car is actually speeding up slowly, and I can’t get the speed down at all. Is the braking system broken?"

His brow furrowed, his voice tinged with anxiety.

The cars on the highway were all moving fast. The slightest mistake could be catastrophic.

Henry Hughes had initially thought that even with a brake problem, the car would eventually slow down as long as he stayed off the accelerator.

But the situation was the complete opposite of what he’d expected. Not only was the car not slowing down, it was gradually picking up speed.

Natalie Morgan hadn’t yet realized the full extent of the danger. She didn’t particularly like driving and knew even less about how cars worked. "I... I don’t know what to do either. In this situation, shouldn’t we call for help right away?"

’But if the car can’t stop, what could a rescue team even do?’

Henry Hughes was the one driving. With the pedals at his feet, he could feel how dire the situation was.

He slammed on the brakes a couple more times, but it was completely useless.

"Just call for help!" Henry Hughes’s face was pale with fright as he frantically pumped the useless brake pedal. "The brakes aren’t working! Are we... are we going to die here?"

The steering wheel was starting to feel unresponsive in his hands.

The car began to swerve on the road.

"Keep a steady hand on the wheel," Natalie Morgan reminded him, panic slowly creeping into her own voice. "I’ll make the call."

Henry Hughes was still just a kid, after all. He’d never experienced anything like this and completely lost his nerve. "Manager Childs, I can’t believe we’re going to die together... I’m not even married yet..."

A wave of sadness and grief washed over Natalie Morgan as well.

’My poor little Momo is going to lose his mother.’

’Will the other kids at school bully him?’

’He’s so gentle. If he gets bullied, will he just cry?’

Natalie Morgan took out her phone and tried to call for help, but the call wouldn’t go through.

She tried sending a text message.

That failed to send, too.

"Hughes, give me your phone."

"What’s wrong?"

With a sweaty, trembling hand, Henry Hughes fumbled in his pocket for his phone and handed it to Natalie Morgan.

She took it and tried to make a call, but it was the same as with her own phone.

’Could it be...’

’This car has a signal jammer installed.’

’Which means this isn’t an accident. It’s attempted murder.’

A chill ran down her spine.

’Looks like we’re really going to die in a crash today.’

"Manager Childs, we’re going faster and faster!" He glanced at the speedometer, then at the rearview mirror, and saw a car approaching them. "There’s a car behind us, and it’s getting close! Manager Childs, if it hits us, the consequences will be unthinkable!"

Natalie Morgan finally turned to look behind them.

Her heart leaped into her throat when she saw the familiar license plate.

’It’s Theodore Grant’s car.’

’What is he doing?’

The car behind was moving fast, and in moments, it pulled up alongside them.

Theodore Grant quickly rolled down his window and shouted at their car, "Pull the emergency brake! Pump the brakes, don’t slam them! I’ll use my car to force you to a stop!"

Henry Hughes looked utterly baffled, but thankfully he still had his wits about him and nodded quickly.

"I understand!"

But Natalie Morgan realized how dangerous that was.

Theodore Grant’s car was already in the outer lane. If he made one mistake and lost control, he would plunge off the cliff. Below was the deep, bottomless sea. He would probably be dead before his car even hit the water. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

"No, that’s too risky!" she yelled, trying to stop Theodore Grant’s insane plan. Her heart was about to pound out of her chest. "Once we run out of gas, the car will stop on its own!"

"The car will only get faster. It will lose control long before it runs out of gas. Listen to me," Theodore Grant’s tone was calm.

In such a perilous situation, the certainty in his decision felt like a powerful reassurance.

Natalie Morgan chose to trust him.

Theodore Grant’s car slowly edged closer to Natalie Morgan’s.

The two cars made contact, sending sparks flying.

The cars let out a deafening, heart-stopping screech of scraping metal.

Thankfully, the speed of Natalie Morgan’s car actually started to drop.

Henry Hughes shouted excitedly, "It’s slowing down! Manager Childs, we’re saved!"

As the speed decreased, the car’s systems seemed to stabilize slightly.

It wasn’t so out of control anymore.

But they were still moving incredibly fast.

"There’s a runaway ramp ahead! Head for it!"

Henry Hughes’s confidence returned.

He focused on his driving.

But...

That runaway ramp only had a single lane. Their car could get on it, but Theodore Grant’s car would be forced off the road.

At this speed, his car would surely fly off the cliff.

"No!" she cried, realizing what would happen.

Henry Hughes was confused. "Manager Childs, this is our only chance to be saved! Why not?"

"What about him? We just leave him?" Natalie Morgan’s eyes were rimmed with red.

Henry Hughes didn’t know what to say.

When it came to life and death, even the kindest person would struggle with the choice.

"Manager Childs, we have to choose! Maybe he still has a chance of surviving, but if we don’t take that ramp, we have no chance at all! I’m my parents’ only child! If I die, they won’t be able to go on..."

Between saving his own life and saving someone else’s, he decisively chose himself.

The runaway ramp was right in front of them.

The two cars were still grinding violently against each other.

Theodore Grant was trying to use his own brakes to slow their car down.

It was having little effect.

’As long as they can get onto that ramp, they should be fine.’

’As for me...’

’I’m already prepared.’

"Don’t drive there!" Natalie Morgan tried to stop Henry Hughes from heading for the ramp.

But right then, he couldn’t care less if anyone else lived or died. He just wanted to live. He had to live.

"Manager Childs, we don’t even know him! Forget about him! As long as we can survive, there’s still hope!"

"Henry Hughes, you can’t be so selfish."

’There’s nothing wrong with wanting to live.’

’The wrong part is that Theodore Grant is trying to save us, and in return, we’re sending him to his death.’
