Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Hurry Up and Have a Child

He didn’t reply, likely deeming her unworthy of an answer.

Just as their car pulled into a spot in the hospital parking lot, another car pulled in opposite them.

Through the clear window, their eyes met. The man inside was Sean Lane.

Theodore Grant’s eyes grew wary.

"Stay in the car. Don’t get out," he told Natalie, pushing open his door and stepping out.

As Theodore walked toward Sean’s car, Sean got out to meet him.

Before Sean could even close his car door, Theodore’s fist connected with his face.

Sean Lane stumbled back a couple of steps before falling to the ground.

He wiped the blood from his lips and smirked, looking at Theodore with defiance. "Do you know why I’m here? It was Elder Grant who had your father summon me."

"Trying to steal the inheritance? Elder Grant isn’t dead yet." Theodore aimed a kick at Sean’s head. "You think you’re worthy?"

Sean covered his head, not fighting back, and just kept laughing. "Whether I’m worthy or not, isn’t that up to the old man to decide? Theodore Grant, the war between us is just beginning."

Theodore kicked him again, sending him sprawling to the ground.

His slender finger pointed viciously at the man on the ground. "Who do you think you are? An illegitimate son. What gives you the nerve, the right, to fight me for it?"

"I’m not just going to fight you for the Grant family inheritance. I’m going to take your woman, too. Theodore Grant, the Grant family will be mine, and your woman will be mine. Don’t believe me? Just you wait and see."

Sean Lane laughed maniacally.

Blood stained his lips red, his deep-set features twisted into a sinister, ferocious expression.

From inside the car, Natalie couldn’t hear what the two men were saying.

But she could see clearly that Theodore was enraged.

His fists rained down on Sean Lane like a tempest.

Sean didn’t fight back, simply letting Theodore beat him.

He only stopped when the Grant family pulled him away.

Lucas Grant led both Theodore Grant and Sean Lane inside.

Natalie got out of the car, preparing to head to the hospital room as well.

"Natalie."

She turned around. It was Felix Finch.

"Felix."

"Here to see Elder Grant?" he asked, closing his car door and walking over.

Natalie nodded slightly. "Yes."

His eyes happened to fall on her hand, and he asked in surprise, "What happened to your hand? Are you hurt?"

"I burned it by accident." She didn’t elaborate.

"Have you had it treated?"

"Not yet."

Without another word, Felix said, "Come with me. I’ll take you to get that hand treated."

Natalie didn’t refuse.

Although the burn wasn’t severe, it hurt a lot. She didn’t want to risk an infection, as she needed her hands to play the piano and to work.

Felix took Natalie to the burn clinic.

He personally treated the blisters on her hand.

He wore a blue surgical mask, his eyes fixed on her hand. He quickly and precisely lanced the blood blisters, squeezed out the fluid, and then disinfected the area.

His movements were methodical and steady.

Natalie had known him for four or five years.

They had been at the same university but in different majors. However, Felix Finch’s striking good looks made him a hot topic of conversation among the female students.

They only really got to know each other because of Theodore Grant.

The Finch and Grant families were long-standing family friends.

Felix Finch and Theodore Grant had grown up together.

The two, with their completely different personalities, became good friends.

He could have returned home to inherit his family’s medical group, but at Theodore’s request, he became Elder Grant’s personal physician.

"Felix, I wanted to ask you..."

"What do you want to ask?"

Natalie hesitated for a moment. "Grandpa’s health..."

Felix understood what Natalie wanted to know.

He gently wrapped her hand in gauze. "Elder Grant’s body is indeed failing."

"Then when will they draw my blood?"

Felix froze and looked up. "Who told you they were going to take your blood?"

"Does anyone even need to say it?" she replied. "I can’t get pregnant, and the Grant family doesn’t want to let Elder Grant go, so the only option is to use my blood for his treatment. I want to know the exact time."

"If you and Theodore have a child soon, there will still be time."

"It’s impossible for us to have a child." Felix knew about her condition. "Felix, if they really take my blood, does that mean I have no chance of survival?"

In medicine, nothing is absolute.

’But if you were to replace a person’s entire blood supply, the most likely result would be...’

"If it’s a life for a life, would you be willing?" he asked, his gaze burning into hers.

Natalie sighed. "Do I have a choice?"

"And if you did have a choice?"

"I’m not willing."

’A life is a life, isn’t it?’

’But how could someone with a worthless life like mine ever escape the grasp of the powerful?’

Felix didn’t know how to comfort her.

In the end, all he could say was, "Trust Theodore. He won’t let something so absurd happen."

「In the hospital room.」

Because Sean Lane had been beaten black and blue, Lucas Grant completely lost his composure, berating Theodore Grant right in front of Elder Grant and his own wife.

"What the hell do you think you’re doing? Are you trying to kill him?" Lucas Grant’s fingertips trembled with rage. "I was the one who called him here! If you want to hit someone, hit me! Vent your anger on me, go on!"

Originally, Elder Grant had wanted to formally acknowledge Sean Lane and welcome him into the family before he passed away. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

But Lucas’s attitude had made Elder Grant give up on the idea.

In the Grant family, it was absolutely forbidden for an illegitimate son to lord it over the legitimate heir.

Lucas Grant had clearly forgotten that.

"You’re his father. Is it appropriate for you to speak to your own son that way?" Elder Grant coughed twice from his bed.

Lucas put his hands on his hips, not feeling he was in the wrong at all. "Dad, Theodore is completely spoiled, and it’s your fault. Sean did nothing wrong, but..."

"Sean Lane’s biggest mistake was ever existing," Theodore shot back, looking at Lucas with utter disdain. "Did you call him here to give him a piece of the Grant family fortune, or the whole thing? My mother isn’t dead yet, but the mistress’s child is already at our door? If that third-rate starlet hadn’t died, would my mother have had to give up her place for her?"

"You... you..." Lucas was sputtering with rage. "...Dad, look at your precious grandson! Listen to the things he’s saying! Does he sound anything like the heir to the Grant family?"

Just then, Felix Finch and Natalie Morgan walked into the room.

Seeing her mother-in-law wiping away tears of grievance, Natalie walked to her side and gently steadied her. "Mom."

With Felix, an outsider, present, Lucas dropped the argument, called to Sean, and left.

The hospital room finally quieted down.

Helena Sullivan took Natalie’s hand and exclaimed, "How did you hurt your hand?"

"I burned it by accident. It’s nothing, Mom."

Helena Sullivan had spent her entire life dealing with her husband’s cheating, his mistresses, and his illegitimate children.

The arguments, the hurt, the hospital stays—she had experienced every pain a woman could endure.

As a fellow woman, she recognized Natalie’s lie—it was the same kind of lie she had been telling her whole life.

"You poor child. You put up with so much."

Theodore’s expression hardened. His gaze shifted from Natalie’s bandaged hand to Felix’s face.

"You treated it for her?"
