Chapter 86: Chapter 79: Ex-fiancée

Isla Prescott saw the woman’s tears clinging to her lower lashes, on the verge of falling, and thought she looked pitiable. Shane Sterling, however, showed no tenderness whatsoever.

He furrowed his brow, shook off the woman’s hand, and said coldly, "If your sister’s missing, you should go to the police. Why come to me?"

The woman flinched, biting her trembling lower lip. It was as if she’d only just realized calling the police was an option, and she scurried away in a panic.

Shane Sterling put his arm around Isla Prescott and led her into the restaurant.

Isla Prescott couldn’t help but ask, "Who was that just now?"

Shane Sterling answered nonchalantly, "My ex-sister-in-law."

’Ex-sister-in-law?’

Isla Prescott mulled over the connection. She suddenly remembered that Shane Sterling had been engaged before. ’If that woman was his ex-sister-in-law, then her "missing sister" must be his ex-fiancée—the one who cheated on him, right?’

’What a coincidence,’ she thought. ’His ex-fiancée and her sister are traveling here too, of all things.’

A knot of displeasure formed in Isla Prescott’s chest, and for some reason, she lost her appetite.

The two of them had dinner at the hotel restaurant. Afterward, they were about to go for a stroll on the beach to walk off their meal, but before they even reached the entrance, they heard the wail of approaching police sirens.

Shane Sterling glanced in the direction of the flashing red and blue police lights. ’Could it be that Jocelyn Quincy is really missing?’ he wondered.

"Isabelle, would you mind going back to the room first?" he asked Isla Prescott. "I want to go see what’s going on."

A person going missing was no small matter. Even setting aside their past engagement, it was only natural for him to check on the situation, if only as an acquaintance.

"Okay."

Seeing her agree, Shane Sterling stroked her cheek, then turned and ran toward the police car.

Isla Prescott had already been in the room for a day and a night and didn’t want to be cooped up again so soon, so she went for a walk on the beach by herself.

By the time she returned from her walk, a crowd of onlookers, drawn by the police car, had gathered at the hotel entrance. Annabelle Leighton and her friends were among them.

"Isabelle," Annabelle Leighton said upon seeing her, waving her over.

Isla Prescott walked over to Annabelle Leighton’s side. "Why are you all down here?"

"Heard that girl from the Quincy family went missing," Annabelle Leighton said quietly, pursing her lips. "The police and hotel staff were searching everywhere just now, practically turning every room upside down. It was so disruptive no one could get any rest, so we all came down."

"Did they find her?"

"Not yet."

Just as they were speaking, the lobby elevator opened with a DING. Two police officers stepped out of the car, escorting a man and a woman. The man was well over six feet tall with blond hair and blue eyes, wearing nothing but a pair of beach shorts. The woman had deathly pale skin and wore a slip dress, her long hair completely disheveled.

The woman was none other than the Quincy family’s eldest daughter, Jocelyn Quincy.

"Why are you arresting me? I already told you, that stuff isn’t mine! Someone framed me! I’m innocent!" Jocelyn Quincy yelled, shaking off the officer’s hand.

"Settle down!" The officer grabbed her again.

Jocelyn Quincy struggled even harder. "You’re hurting me! Do you have any idea who I am? You’ll pay for this!"

"I don’t care who you are. All I know is that you broke the law!"

"I already told you, that stuff isn’t mine! I didn’t use—"

Before Jocelyn Quincy could finish, the police shoved both of them into the car. But the car didn’t leave immediately. It just waited there.

A moment later, the lobby elevator opened a second time. Another, higher-ranking police officer emerged from the elevator car, along with Shane Sterling and Jocelyn Quincy’s sister, Genevieve Quincy.

Shane Sterling said something to the officer, and the officer nodded again and again.

Genevieve Quincy trailed behind Shane Sterling, her eyes red and swollen from crying. She kept glancing anxiously toward the police car, then she would turn her head to look at the man in front of her, steady as a mountain, and her expression would grow calm again.

No one knew that Young Mr. Shaw, who was seen by most as a total rogue, was the one person who always made Genevieve Quincy feel completely safe.

With Jocelyn Quincy found, the crowd of onlookers dispersed, but the gossip sparked by the spectacle began to spread like wildfire.

Some said Jocelyn Quincy had hired a foreign male model and was hiding in a hotel linen closet with him for a thrill. Others said the foreigner was her boyfriend and that the two of them were arrested for doing drugs together.

Isla Prescott and Annabelle Leighton went upstairs together.

In the elevator, someone was still talking about the incident, recounting it so vividly it was as if they’d been there to witness it firsthand.

Annabelle Leighton raised an eyebrow at Isla Prescott, her expression unreadable. It wasn’t until they were out of the elevator and away from the others that Annabelle finally said what she’d been holding back.
