Chapter 258: Lyvarian Court (2)

Evanna held the queen’s stare, ignoring the threat in her gaze. She knew now her mother was never welcome in the court. She couldn’t have been. Or was this judgemental look because she was illegitimate and her mother nothing more than the king’s mistress?

Queen Iolena acted like Evanna was distasteful, but to the princess, the roles were reversed. She put her thoughts aside. This was not the place, and the gem was more important than some fight of wills and mental strategy in a court Evanna did not know the rules of. If there were any rules at all. She sensed there were none.

"Your majesties," Evanna began, but the Queen held her hand up, glancing at the guards of the walls.

"We are normally aware of a visit from other kingdoms. Yet before me is Arawn, son of.." Queen Iolena gritted her teeth together. "King Thalinal, and Evanna, daughter of Selvin and Loraven, breech my borders without an invite. Normally you are shot on site-"

"Instead, we fought a dragon. I’m sure we are even," Evanna snapped, glaring at the Queen, not bothering to correct the Queen’s slip. She was much older than her appearance; it was possible the old bag couldn’t remember who the king was; she could have been lost in the past or was not updated on the human kingdoms.

The latter could not be possible. Evanna glanced in Fiza’s direction, and as she suspected, the night fae was moving away from the group, and the guards allowed it. Fiza’s destination had been the Lyvarian palace; she must have information for the king and queen. The queen was old and losing her memory, it seemed.

"Oh?" The king ambled over to stand just in front of the queen. They stood in front of the dais and thrones. The king’s wings fluttered slightly as though revealing his excitement from hearing about a dragon. "And you are here alive? That does cause for celebration. Our granddaughter is indeed skilful. I wonder.."

He took another step forwards, his barefoot smooth and pretty. That’s right, even his feet were pretty; it made her eyes narrow in annoyance. Not just because of her grandfather’s obvious looks but because they were unaware of the loss the group was facing.

"Just how powerful you are.. what blood runs thick inside of you.." King Nuvian tilted his head, and a glimmer sparkled in his eyes, making her shiver.

"*Guards,*" Queen Iolena ordered, pointing to the group.

Panic set into Evanna’s shoulder blades, the chill from before sending ice down her spine and numbing her feet. She would not risk another to die. Especially by these elves that were aware of who she was and did not care. It was fine, she never had her hopes up, and she had no interest in them.

The only ones Evanna was interested in were her prince and her comrades. "No!" Evanna knocked her elbow into the guard claiming her arm, and spun to punch the other behind her.

The group were already fighting until the ice beneath their feet started to crack, and the walls spun. They started stumbling to the side, feeling dizzy and confused. Evanna stopped moving, feeling her heart thump wildly at the idea of the floor breaking.

"Arawn?"

"I’m trying... I can’t..." Arawn was struggling to breathe.

The others clutched at their heads and fell to their knees. Evanna and Arawn shared a look, noting the guards were unaffected and were not concerned by the floor or the walls. This was not real.

Evanna looked at the King and Queen. They were watching them in fascination. Evanna narrowed her gaze, called to her gifts and shot forwards, unaware of what one she was using until a thorny rose shot past the Queen’s face, leaving a scratch on the side of her face and a trail of blood in its wake. The world around them returned to normal as Queen Iolena’s eyes locked with Evanna’s.

Pure shock and anger reflected in her gaze as her hand rose to her cheek. The King grinned beside her, uncaring his wife’s face had been cut. That was a little... odd? She expected outrage.

Actually, she didn’t expect to outright attack them, just distract them. Now the princess knew the Queen was a manipulator of their minds, much like what Evanna could do in controlling those around her and her mother’s power of dream walking.

"*Hmm, my turn.*" The king stepped forwards. But Evanna was distracted by her friends, who had been pulled to the side, hands tied behind their backs. That included Arawn. But from the look on the prince’s face, he was still recovering. He couldn’t use his powers and the effort he put into fighting the many guards until he struggled and was pinned to the floor by seven guards.

The others were much the same whilst Fiza stood to the side, her brows pinched together. The only indication that the night fae felt some remorse for what she was watching. Evanna did not expect her to step in and help, though. Fiza was not on anyone’s side.

She was merely there to do a job.

The loud slap and the force of something hitting Evanna’s cheek whipped her head to the side and away from her comrades. Startled and wide-eyed, she clutched her cheek and stared back at a large vine, the side of a tree trunk hovering in front of her. The princess’ gaze moved from this... magic; it wasn’t a beast, it was formed from elven magic, and that meant...

Evanna’s gaze landed on the king whose wings were now gracefully flapping, and he hovered above the ground, vines expanding away from him, crawling along the ground, wood created out of thin air and turning into sharp splinters and pointing towards Evanna. Her gift... Her gift... was the same as the kings. The same as her... grandfathers.

But her gift was nothing like his. He was powerful beyond measure. Frighteningly so.

Evanna had only trained for a few weeks, and though what she could do was deemed extremely helpful thus far, it was not even comparable to the power radiating from the fairy king.

Evanna’s eyes widened as wooden spikes shot towards her; she managed to jump and roly-poly to the side just in time. She didn’t expect a warm welcome, but she most certainly did not expect this?! She dodged an incoming vine with thorns slicing through the air and landing with a loud thunk on the ground beside her.

Evanna did not have her sword, which she would have swung to cut the end of. But she did have her powers. Though, she already felt worn out. Like Arawn, she needed to recover. So whatever she was going to use had to be a maximum of three shots to stop the king from injuring or, worse, killing her.

She could not die. Her mother needed her.
