Heart Over Sword-Chapter 276: Power (2)
Chapter 276: Power (2)
Dressed and clean, Ger told Axel and Ronan what happened to him, including the part about this curse and what he was. The pair were blown away, staring at him like he was some sort of god.
’To these mortals we are.’
Ger grimaced at the voice in his mind. It had only spoken to him a few times so far, but every time made him feel closer to losing his sanity. Was this all real? Or was it some sort of afterlife?
Those thoughts only flurried through his mind over the course of a second as he stared back at his friends on the sofa in the small living quarters adjoined to the guest room Axel was staying in. Once he saw Ronan and Axel’s faces again, he was reminded that this was all real.
He was this dragon slayer, this Dragonkin. Whatever this voice was had to be connected to it all. If it was, it would be helpful if it could tell him more about what he’d become. Anytime he thought such things, though, his mind was quiet, again making him believe it was not real.
"That’s so cool," Ronan murmured, watching Ger with bright eyes.
Axel clipped the back of his head. "Did you not hear him? It’s a curse. If he doesn’t kill other dragons, then it sounds like he will become one himself, losing his mind to the beasts... Right?" Axel looked at Ger.
Ger nodded in confirmation. That’s as much as he knew, though.
"You became a Dragonkin." Another voice hissed as the door to Axel’s room opened. Ger was already in front of the door by the time it was fully open, and he stared at Garrett threateningly.
"Are you here to start another fight?" Ger asked, his tone low and deadly.
Garrett smirked. "No, I think you proved your point earlier."
The elven warrior waltzed in and flopped down in the spare armchair, taking Axel’s drink from the coffee table and downing it in one go.
"Please do come in!" Ronan snarkily said, narrowing his eyes at the elf that dragged him out of his blissful morning.
Axel didn’t care about his drink, but he did set his gaze on Garrett harshly. "You left Evanna and Arawn with those cruel creatures?" He asked, watching the warrior who had been nothing but an honourable guard throughout the time they’d spent together. It had only become more apparent here in the Lyvarian palace.
Somewhere along the way, Garrett had grown a little fond of Evanna. Axel wasn’t sure when it happened, but he was glad they weren’t bickering, and the arguments had decreased in the group.
"I don’t think they need my help. They’re both highly gifted in their powers. King Nuvian also seems fond of his granddaughter. I doubt anyone will try anything," Garrett replied before his eyes landed on Ger again, directing his question to him. "What do you plan on doing now?"
Ger frowned, raking his fingers through his damp hair, leaving it down and brushing the top of his shoulders. "I’d like a smoke, but my pipe was lost in the lake," he jested, though there was no humour in his voice.
Garrett frowned at his nonchalance. He knew all about Dragonkin and the curse that was now rooted inside of Ger. He didn’t have long until he would need to start slaying dragons. Dragons that were in distant lands across the sea.
Garrett leaned forwards, stapling his fingers together as he frowned, deep in thought. Many of his people went across the seas after the dragons had been slain so much in these parts. The one they fought, the one Ger had become, was now the last one across the kingdoms, this side of the sea.
Seeing Garrett’s scornful expression, Ger sighed and shrugged. "I will help Evanna, and then I will work it out from there."
"Her Highness does not need your help now. She has the gem. We only need to return to her kingdom," Garrett replied. "Unscathed, of course."
Garrett met Ger’s eyes, understanding, crossing them. "I will guard her as before-"
"You know what would be more useful for her, this party and for yourself?" Garrett paused, his question rhetorical. "If you flew us back to Dunhurst."
Ger was left to ponder over Garrett’s words for the rest of the night. He didn’t know how to shift. Levianthian didn’t exactly tell him more than what he could in his dying words. Now, he felt this pressure to prove himself to Garrett and to Evanna. If he could shift, they could return to Dunhurst and return to Loraven’s side quicker. It would also mean they wouldn’t face any dangers in the skies.
Ger remained awake throughout most of the night, lying on the sofa and staring up at the ceiling whilst twiddling his thumbs. He didn’t feel tired, and he noticed since becoming what he was, he only needed a few hours, but he still felt fully rested.
The following morning, the group broke their fast with the king and queen, the conversation mostly led by the king, Arawn and Evanna. Ger felt more than one pair of eyes watching him, but he didn’t feel disturbed by it. He wasn’t concerned with a lot of things. The food, however, was a little too light for his stomach though.
He turned his head to Axel and whispered, "Do they not serve a lot of meat?"
Axel’s eyebrows rose. "Ger, you had a lot. At least half of the meats were served to you." His friend’s brows furrowed and continued. "Maybe this is a side effect?"
’Carnivore. Dragon.’ That voice filled his mind again. This time it sounded frustrated, and Ger could almost feel his irritation at Ger’s lack of knowledge.
"Thin-era for everything." Evanna was the first to lead after everyone in the group finished their meal. She stood with Arawn. "We should depart. My mother awaits us."
The king and queen nodded, rising from their chairs and started to walk beside them through the light hall that acted like a palace of mirrors this morning. It reflected the mountainside within the walls and floors.
The king took Evanna’s hands, stopping her as he gazed at her. The group stopped, allowing the royals to converse with each other. They, however, couldn’t wait to leave.
"Yes, yes. I can see your restlessness. I am sure you will make it in time." The king’s eyes flicked to Ger knowingly and back to the princess.
"We will await your invitation to the wedding," the queen added, her voice deepening as she looked between Evanna and Arawn.
Evanna smiled softly. Of course, they would think it was a ruse so they could get the gem. Unfortunately, they would have to send them an invite to their wedding. But a wedding was far from her mind.
Her friend came back from the dead, and her mother was sick. They needed to return to Dunhurst and hope above everything else that this gemstone was worth this trek for. Arawn has told her many times how it works and is confident it will help. But there was something rooted in the back of her mind that made her doubt it. frёeωebɳovel.com
