Chapter 52: Blood Hunt

Olivia could do nothing but watch as one impossible thing happened after another.

The demon bowing to them after their suicidal pledge. The mana in the air dancing excitedly at the sight of Az, her Az.

The mana solidifying, actually solidifying, taking shape

Something no one knew it could do. Something even the most experienced, educated scholars would salivate to study, yet would doubt even at the sight of it.

To Olivia, it was as if she was watching the world slowly begin to change. And this, she was certain, was only the beginning.

She didn’t know if it was because of Azrael, still encased within that strange bismuth-colored cocoon, or because of the demon whose head was still planted in the snow.

"You, thing. Explain what is happening right now."

"My name is Amon, my lady. Amon, the Fourth Marquis of the Ars Goetia. I am a one-of-a-kind existence, so please, when referring to me, use my name... My Lady,"

he said, shooting her a glance filled with hatred and disgust.

But Olivia could not have cared less.

"Since I assume you are his subordinate now, and you’re calling me ’your lady,’ then I expect you to show the proper respect. After all, I am your lady, correct? Your queen?"

This only hardened the demon’s look further, his glare brimming with even more disdain.

Then...

"Hahahaha! Truly, my lord, you have found a worthy one to stay by your side. I can only hope the rest will be even half the person she is!"

He laughed aloud, his attention turning toward the cocoon and the being being remade within it.

Ultimately, he decided he would indulge the young lady who so arrogantly asked him questions with no regard for his rank or status.

After all, he liked such beings—when their attitudes weren’t aimed at his lord, of course.

Setting his sights on her, he began to explain.

"My lord is currently undergoing a great and grand change.

Most likely, the reward of his first quest, received through his mana inheritance—completed by my pledge and his speedy acceptance."

She understood most of what he was saying, but couldn’t help but wonder: if this was the reward, what was the quest in the first place?

"Mana inheritance... is that what this thing we can see is?"

"Yes, exactly. What you can see is the mana inheri... Wait. You can see it?!"

Seeing him stop mid-sentence at the mere mention that she could see it slightly shook Olivia. Was she not supposed to?

"My lady, what does it look like? Please, tell me what you see."

"It appears to be a floating sheet of translucent red and white glass, with obsidian-black words on it, displaying information about me."

"How is this possible? The only ones who should be able to see the mana inheritance are the direct descendants..."

He paused. "No... I did hear that each inheritance is different. Perhaps my lord’s is shared with his mates. Yes, that must be it."

While the demon was busy talking to himself, Olivia was examining the panel in front of her eyes when—

Ding!

You have been given a quest.

Ding!!!

[It is a great shame for a partner of Solomon’s descendant to be held down by their past, for they should live with no regrets.]

Quest: Blood Hunt

[Kill 150 elves. Elves of the Everlight lineage count for 5 kills.]

[150/0]

Reward: Bloodline fusion and purification (High Elf and Noble Vampire)

But that wasn’t all.

Ding!

Quest: Bane of the Alfar

[For their crimes, they all shall pay.]

Create five new unique poisons: 5/0

Create a poison specialized for the elven race: 1/0

Create a poison specialized for the Everlight lineage: 1/0

Even this wasn’t close to enough.

Ding!

Consume the blood of 200 sentient life forms: 200/0

Consume the blood of 150 elves: 150/0

Collect the bones of 110 sentient creatures: 110/0

Collect the flesh from 120 sentient creatures: 120/0

Reward: ????

Reading all of these quests, one might expect her to be appalled—but that couldn’t be farther from the truth.

She felt seen. Liberated, even.

Each quest was just better and better. She would have killed the elves anyway; this just gave her even more reason and reward for her planned genocide.

She would let a flood of fresh blood dye the elven lands red as she cleaved through the heads of their leaders and hung them from their own castles.

Hahahahaha...

She was so happy she couldn’t help but laugh, imagining the hell she would create for the elven people.

No, in her mind, they couldn’t even be considered people. But they had to be. That was the only way they could be held accountable for their actions.

Hehehehehe...

Turning his head in Olivia’s direction, Amon felt unnerved seeing the young woman giggling with a look of utmost joy on her face while staring at what he assumed was the mana inheritance.

He chose instead to turn his attention back toward his lord.

"My lord, while I did say your choice of a first mate is wonderful... I am starting to doubt my own judgment, as well as yours."

But he could only sigh. What was done was done. There was no going back.

"Well, perhaps I am wrong. The most powerful women in history have always been at least a little bit crazy," he muttered, stealing a final glance in her direction.

While Olivia was lost in daydreams of genocide, and Amon was doubting his lord’s taste in women, Azrael found himself in a strangely familiar place.
