Hell's Actor-Chapter 52 - 109 km/h
Chapter 52: 109 km/h
Frowning, Hyerin looked in the side-view mirrors.
"No, we are not."
"Yes, we are," Averie said.
He rolled down the window and stuck out his head.
One of the cars in their lane was alternating between going fast and keeping it slow. It was an odd way of maintaining speed.
"Definitely." He returned his head to safety. "We are being chased."
"Are you serious?"
Hyerin looked nervous.
The highway had three lanes, and she had been keeping consistently to the middle lane.
Unsure of the situation, just as her friend had instructed, she stepped on the accelerator.
They were going 97 km/h.
As if on cue, a compact car on the right lane abruptly picked up speed, keeping with Hyerin.
"That’s not the car I was looking at..."
Averie narrowed his eyes and tried to peer into the car, but he could see nothing through the dark windows.
"It seems we have more than one car chasing after us."
"What now?" Hyerin looked around frantically. "Who are they? Are they dangerous?"
Averie tapped his fingers to the tune of Sinner No More.
"I can’t afford to be no more."
He turned to his friend.
"Do you remember those heist movies we watched together?"
"Yes, of course."
"Now imagine yourself as the super cool driver that drives recklessly but still somehow manages to survive."
"Okay. And then?"
"What more explanation do you need?" Averie gave her a pat on the shoulder. "Drive like this is your last day on earth, baby."
"I—I can’t do that!"
Averie opened his eyes wide, stared at her through the rear-view mirror, and breathed down her neck.
"Either you drive, or make way for me." A foggy breath escaped his mouth. "I will drive myself."
Hyerin almost screamed out of utter terror.
Overlooking the extremely dangerous task of changing drivers while speeding on a highway, there was one thing that scared her more than anything.
It was Averie’s driving.
Without a second thought, Hyerin ’stepped on it.’
The car was now going 109 km/h.
110 km/h was the highest speed limit in the country.
And the highway they were on allowed up to 100 km/h.
They were breaking the traffic laws.
But worse than that was the fact that it was far too fast for Hyerin’s tastes.
She had never driven anywhere near that speed, and it was starting to make her palms sweaty.
To motivate her, Averie kept whispering in her ear, "I can drive if you want."
His voice sounded like the temptation of the Devil.
It was soothing yet malevolent.
Not being able to shake off their pursuers, Averie asked for Hyerin’s phone.
"I will call the police."
Like an obedient child, she handed it to him.
"What’s wrong with your phone?"
"Nothing. But I don’t think I should give away my number to unknown people. I am a celebrity."
"Oh, smart!"
For a moment, she believed her friend was capable of not always being reckless.
But that illusion too quickly faded.
"But you are fine with giving away my number? They will call me looking for you, you know?"
"Yeah," he laughed maliciously. "That’s none of my business."
He was about to dial 911 when he realized that it probably would not work in Korea.
’Goddamn, what’s the emergency number here?’
Even in such an emergency, Averie prioritized his pride over his safety.
Instead of asking Hyerin about it, he pulled up his phone and looked for the number online.
"What’s taking you so long?" Hyerin asked.
"Just looking at your—um—search history."
"Why?"
"...Making sure you are not looking at anything unhealthy."
"Oh, I—okay."
’That worked?’
As soon as Averie had the number, he called the police.
The lady on the other side was speaking in Korean.
And Averie could understand not a word. A simple task was becoming more and more tedious.
Thankfully, the moment she heard Averie’s voice, she changed to English.
"Is this... actor Averie Quinn Auclair?"
Averie leaned back and crossed his legs.
"I am," he said with a smirk.
"Is this... real? Am I really talking with Asmodeus Binsfeld?"
"We can do more than talk if you want—"
"Averie!" Hyerin interrupted.
"What a jealous woman," he muttered.
He cleared his throat and spoke with a solemn voice.
"My colleague and I are currently in a speeding car. We are being chased by at least two cars."
Hearing the gravity of his voice, the kind lady helped him as much as she could.
"Yes, yes. Uh-huh. I understand. Alright, take care. Love you too."
He put down the phone.
"So, help is coming. But they can’t risk anything at these speeds. We need to slow down and exit the highway at the first opportunity. They will spring into action, then."
But the closest exit ramp was about twenty minutes away.
"You will have to keep driving like a maniac until then, Rin." freeweɓnovel~cѳm
Now that Averie had time to think, he tried to guess who could be chasing him.
’Could it be whoever sent me that note in the middle of the night?’
It sounded plausible.
’But why chase me?’
Soon, he could hear the sound of a helicopter.
Averie looked out the window.
A police helicopter was indeed hovering over them, observing the chase.
"See that, Rin? They are sending choppers already. This is why being a celebrity is worth it."
Right away, Averie received a call from the police officer in command of the situation.
"We have eyes on the vehicles. We will escort you once you are off the highway."
After taking the nearest exit, they were immediately surrounded by a horde of police cars.
A symphony of blaring police sirens seemed to welcome him.
It was quite a sight, seeing so many officers escorting one man.
Once they were at the police station, Hyerin bowed to the officers.
"Thank you very much."
Usually, they would have played it cool.
But right now, Asmodeus Binsfeld himself was standing in front of them.
This was the kind of story one bragged about over beer.
One of the policewomen even bowed to him.
"It’s an honor," she said.
Averie wasn’t sure about that.
’Is it okay for a police officer to say that to a fictional high-ranking member of the mafia?’
"Can I get a picture?" she asked.
Averie complied.
But the requests did not end there.
A policeman handed him his loaded pistol to pose with.
"Can you face the serial number towards the camera, please?" He snapped a few pictures. "That’s wonderful. Now, I have something to show my suspects before I unlawfully execute them."
Averie laughed it off, but there was indeed some darkness in that officer’s eyes.
Hyerin, on the other hand, was in disbelief seeing her friend being handed a live gun by officers of the law.
"What has the world come to?"
But the most concerned of them all was Averie.
’Get the intrusive thoughts out of your head, Gene.’
The Hellion inside of him was getting funny ideas about the gun.
Somehow, Averie suppressed his urges.
Donning the expression and aura of Asmodeus Binsfeld, he posed for the cops.
"That’s it!"
"One more, please!"
"Now, do it nonchalantly."
"Now, can you please hold it to my forehead as I look up while lying on the ground?"
"Reenacting the first episode, huh?"
Against Hyerin’s protests, Averie complied.
They even reenacted the sixth episode.
"You want me to shoot you twenty times?"
The cop laughed.
"That would make for a fun story."
Soon, over the radio, the voice of their superior rang out.
"The suspects... have somehow escaped."
