Chapter 73: Chapter 73: Be Mediocre

Rainbow’s voice sounded in Aiden’s mind again, laced with annoyance. "What do you want to say now? I want to sleep."

Aiden sat down on his bed and gently cupped Rainbow’s tiny body in his hands.

"Why do you like sleeping so much? Are you sick or something? Should I take you to the vet?" Aiden asked the bird softly.

"Are you treating me like a pet?" Rainbow’s voice shot back mentally.

"Aren’t you?" Aiden countered.

"I’m not a pet, okay? I’m a spirit animal! Have you ever seen a pet that talks before? And the reason I’m sleeping so much is to regain my energy so I can quickly recover my abilities."

Aiden nodded. "Fine. I’ll let you go back to sleep after you’ve answered some of my questions."

"Fine," Rainbow conceded.

Aiden began his questions. "If you say that I’m a Tribrid, how come the school doesn’t know that? They only thought one of my powers would manifest, and that the other two bloodlines would simply elevate the power of the one that did."

Rainbow’s mental voice became sarcastic.

"Well, your school doesn’t know anything.

How else do you think they came to that terrible conclusion? There’s something you need to know: my previous master was a Tribrid. It was through her that they came to the conclusion of only one bloodline manifesting. Back then, there was a reason the school must not know about it, so my previous master told the school that only her Witch power and bloodline was working out of her three bloodlines, and the remaining two acted as a booster to her Witch bloodline. That’s where the school came to the conclusion of only one bloodline manifesting."

Rainbow’s tone then shifted to one of serious caution. "Aiden, my advice to you: when your powers manifests—although I don’t know what’s delaying it, because you should have manifested all your powers by now, but now that you have your healing ability, the rest will soon come—at that time, no matter who asks you, only tell them that you have one power. Since your friends already saw you heal, tell the world that you’re only a Fae. There are people in this world and this school who are closely watching you, and they must not know about your three powers manifesting. Even after you tell the world that you only have your Fae power, do not stand out. Be a mediocre Fae. My master standing out too much as a Witch is what caused her death. Listen to me on this, okay?"

Aiden’s brow furrowed with concern. "Is it that bad?"

"It is that bad," Rainbow replied gravely. "It is more than that. It is the very reason why your school’s higher authorities must not know about me or even see what I look like. So listen to me, Aiden, okay?"

Aiden nodded again. "If it’s that dangerous here, then why am I still here? I should leave instead."

Rainbow mentally rolled his eyes. "Haven’t you already tried withdrawing from the school once? Where had that gotten you? How are you so stupid as to follow a man to a school where you know no one and a school you know nothing about? I just don’t understand you!"

Aiden defended his actions. "Well, it wasn’t my fault. Since you already told me that I’m a Tribrid, then what Julian told me about me and Ryker should likely be true then."

"And what is it that this friend of yours, Julian, told you?" Rainbow’s voice sounded in Aiden’s mind again.

Aiden answered, "He told me about how I might possibly be Ryker’s true mate and a Dominant Omega."

A mental "WHAT?!" resonated in Aiden’s mind, nearly making him jump.

"Why are you so shocked?" Aiden asked.

Rainbow began a series of pointed questions. "When you met Ryker for the first time, did you feel like you’d met the solution to your problems and that you couldn’t stop thinking about him?"

"Yes, that’s exactly how I felt," Aiden confirmed.

"And after you followed him here and he denied knowing you in front of the entire school, how did you feel?"

Aiden thought about that painful memory. "I felt heartbroken. I felt like my life purpose was suddenly torn away from me. I even briefly felt like I didn’t want to live anymore."

"What happened today that made you want to brush your own lips off until you turned it into a mangled mess?" Rainbow asked, moving to the most recent event.

"Zane kissed me, and I was so angry and feeling so guilty," Aiden explained. "Every fiber of my body kept telling me that I had betrayed Ryker, and brushing my lips that hard was the only way for me to punish myself for that."

Rainbow continued the mental interrogation. "Then how are you feeling now? Like, when you think about Ryker, what do you feel?"

Aiden thought of Ryker, and a bright smile unknowingly crept onto his lips. "Right now, I feel like going to Ryker to hold him to myself, to confess how I’m feeling to him, and hold on to him without letting go forever."

Rainbow’s mental voice sounded out again, this time filled with dread. "This is bad. This is truly bad. In fact, this is crazy."

Aiden frowned. "What is bad? Do you also think I am Ryker’s mate or not? Answer me. Is it bad that I’m not Ryker’s mate, or is it bad that I am Ryker’s mate?"

Rainbow delivered the unwelcome truth. "From everything you’ve told me, you’re definitely Ryker’s mate—the one and only. And that’s why it’s bad. Like, it’s crazy bad. Do you know what type of family Ryker’s family is? Why do you have to be the mate of someone from that family? This is crazy."

Aiden pressed him for details. "What are you talking about? What’s wrong with Ryker’s family? Tell me more about all this so that I will know how to protect myself, so that I will know who to trust and who to not trust."

Rainbow went silent for a while before finally speaking again. "I’m sorry, I can’t tell you anything for now. You don’t even have your power, and if you become overly cautious, some people might notice that something is wrong. Aiden, I’m telling you right now: the only person you should trust is yourself."

Rainbow paused, then continued with a distinct tone of reluctance. "And although it pains me to say this because I don’t want you to be mated to someone from that family, the other person that you can fully trust in this life is Ryker. It is a fact that you two are true mates, and Ryker will definitely not betray you in this life."

Aiden wanted to insist and ask Rainbow to tell him everything, but he also knew that what Rainbow said made sense. He forced himself to stop asking, settling on a final question. "But are you really sure that I am truly Ryker’s true mate?"

"I’m sure about it. In fact, I think Ryker should know about this, too."

Aiden frowned. "I don’t think Ryker knows about it. If he did, he would have come to me and would have dissolved his engagement with Seraphina."

Rainbow’s mental voice resonated in Aiden’s mind. "I don’t think it will be that easy for your mate to dissolve his engagement to that lady called Seraphina. If it were that easy, he would have done it already. I’m pretty sure the reason he hasn’t mentioned anything about you being his mate is exactly for that reason."

Aiden frowned, confused by the logic. "But that’s not how it’s supposed to be! He should have dissolved the engagement immediately when he realized I’m his mate. According to what I learned from Julian and Ashton, mates are destined to be together, and even parents have to accept that. There’s nothing they can do about it, so he should just tell his family that I’m his mate and dissolve his engagement with Seraphina."

Rainbow chuckled mentally, a dry, sarcastic sound. "You’re thinking like a kid. Did you just forget how I said that his family is dangerous and that your manifested power must be a Fae?"

"I didn’t forget, of course," Aiden quickly answered. "I’m telling people that I’m a Fae. I listened to every word you said."

"You’re not listening well, okay?" Rainbow admonished. "Ryker is a Dominant Alpha—this is something everyone knows. And you also forgot the part where a Dominant Alpha’s mate can only be a Dominant Omega, which is a Wolf. So, is that not revealing to everyone that, ’Hello, I’m a Tribrid?’ Because you’re already going to tell people that you’re a Fae, but then you’re also an Alpha’s mate, which is a Fae and a Wolf combined. Do you think they are stupid people who can’t do the math?"

Aiden grimaced at the flawless logic. "But, can’t I just tell everyone that I’m a Wolf then? I’m sure they’ll believe it. Wolves can heal themselves too."

Rainbow’s mental voice was filled with sarcasm. "Yeah, they’ll believe it until you become wounded publicly and you start healing faster than even Ryker, who should be the most powerful Wolf. Then the secret will be out. And did you forget the part where I told you that you must be mediocre? A Dominant Omega isn’t exactly mediocre, okay? After Ryker in the Wolf race, you’re the next most powerful. So tell me, how is that mediocre?"
