Chapter 230: 230

*Gulp

Swallowing a mouthful of saliva, the old man barely managed to hold back his fear as he retreated a few steps. In that instant, he felt like he was about to be swallowed alive. Thankfully, the heavenly oath was there to protect him.

And though he tried his best to appear calm on the surface, his mind was already in a mess. He didn’t even know how a young boy suddenly turned into a black tiger. The first thought that came to his mind was that he was facing a demonic beast.

Although he had met a few demonic beasts when he was a cultivator, their strength at most was equal to the Pulse forging realm. But he had heard stories about how, when the demonic beasts would reach an incredible high realm, they would change into human form.

He couldn’t help but wonder if he was facing one such entity.

Perhaps that might explain why he was so naive and could be fooled into taking a heavenly oath.

But this was an even more terrifying conjuncture. If he truly were a demonic beast, then he would definitely be accompanied by his subordinates.

And in that case, just one of them was enough to obliterate him without even triggering the heavenly oath’s restriction.

Although it looked like much time had passed, in fact, all of it happened in the blink of an eye.

From Yang Ze turning into a black tiger and shattering the black fog surrounding him to the old man retreating in fear while thinking about it.

He didn’t even have time to react when he saw the black tiger’s figure flash past him, directly jumping towards the group of girls whose blades were already halfway to their hearts.

Looking at this scene, the old man gritted his teeth before making an abrupt decision.

"What do I have to lose?" He still believed in the heavenly oath. And just now, after the death of almost the entirety of the children, he seemed to have greater control over the black fog.

Although killing those children all at once was pitiful, as they were his future investment for even more children, the current him didn’t have the luxury to think or plan about it.

Without any hesitation, he tightly gripped the cane and, looking at the black tiger with a gaze full of hate, broke it into two pieces.

*Crack

The sound of the cane snapping into two reverberated in the cave. In this particular tense and quiet moment, it was especially loud.

But Yang Ze didn’t have the time to pay attention to it. His focus was entirely on Qing Cao’s figure as he rushed towards her.

He could see her figure slowly overlapping with the figure of his own younger sister from Earth. That same face... that same expression... those same eyes... and that hair tied neatly in the shape of pigtails. Everything about her reminded him of his younger sister, whom he loved and protected back on Earth with all his heart.

Even though it was his sister who could be said to be the one responsible for his death, he didn’t resent her in the slightest. Perhaps because it was due to his love and affection for her, or perhaps because of any other reason, whatever might have been the case, the current Yang Ze wanted to save the girl in front of him.

Three meters... two meters... one meter...

Just when Yang Ze was half a meter away from her, he felt an overwhelming, dense black fog surrounding him. Compared to before, the fog had turned corporeal as it took the shape of numerous chains that bound the black tiger.

Even though they shattered the moment they wrapped around the massive black tiger, they had fulfilled their tasks of delaying him.

In that short span of time, the knives in the girl’s hands finally fell, directly landing in the middle of their chest, piercing through what was their pitiful, fragile little bodies, tearing the minute flesh and cutting through bones before landing on their hearts.

In that instant, time itself seemed to freeze. Yang Ze watched in disbelief as the girls’ eyes regained their clarity for a brief amount of time as they looked at the numerous corpses around them, then at their own hands, which were dyed red with blood and finally at the knife embedded in their chests. They were merely under the influence of the old man. Every little action they took, everything they did... it was all vivid in their minds. During this entire time, their minds were clear. They saw everything around them, they saw the arrival of Yang Ze, they saw themselves killing the fellow villagers... but there was nothing they were able to do. Their bodies just refused to listen to them.

They felt it all as they killed their own friends and the last remaining villagers with their own hands.

And now that they met with the same fate... for the first time in what felt like forever, they were at peace. Finally, the nightmare was over... Finally, they could be free... Finally, they could rest.

The only pity was that they still weren’t able to see the scenery of the outside world that they wanted to see the most.

All those vivid colours... all those mysterious places and bustling cities... all those stories that they had heard from others... they couldn’t witness any of it.

In their dying moments, their gazes were stuck at the massive black tiger, which seemed to have frozen; filled with hopes, dreams and unwillingness as well as a sense of relief and peace.

*Thud

*Thud

*Thud

In an instant, the sound of five bodies hitting the ground came at the same time.

Yang Ze, who had turned into a massive black tiger, could only watch as the five lifeless bodies fell at the same time.

In that instant, his mind was in a mess as he even forgot to react.

He didn’t even notice that after the girls fell to the ground, their blood seeped onto the platform, converging towards the altar made of bones.

And on that altar, a small skull that was of a newborn child was beginning to turn pitch red as it began to emit pitch black fog that was converging towards the old man.

The only thing in Yang Ze’s sight was the face of Qing Cao, whose lifeless eyes were glaring in his direction.

In that instant, Yang Ze felt like his heart had been pierced by a thousand needles. Even though he had spent only a few days with this group of girls, the bond that he managed to form during that time was far beyond acquaintanceship. To him, they were akin to his little sisters. He admired their tenacity and courage. He admired how, even after losing all the grown-ups in the village, they took the responsibility of all the children upon themselves. Especially Yan-er, who reminded him of himself after the death of his father.

Taking a deep breath, Yang Ze suppressed the raging emotions in his heart as he slowly turned around to face the old man whose entire body was covered in a pitch-black fog that had an occasional tinge of red.

At the moment, he didn’t even pay attention to the figure of the young girl sitting quietly in the air, watching him and the old man with interest.

He didn’t attack the old man. Neither did he say a single word. He merely kept on gazing at him, waiting for the fog to disappear.

Even though the old man’s figure was covered in fog, one could still see occasional scenes from the outside.

The fog was seeping into the old man’s body, and with every passing moment, his face was turning red and his breathing long and heavy.

But the changes didn’t just stop there. Slowly, the wrinkles on his face began to disappear, and his white hair turned grey at a speed visible to the naked eye.

Even the loose, old skin on his body was slowly turning soft and young.

In less than the time it takes for an incense to burn, the old man had changed from a man in his eighties to a man in his thirties.

"Huff..."

Taking a deep breath, the man inhaled the last trace of the black fog before letting out a deep sigh of satisfaction.

It was only then that he opened his eyes to look at Yang Ze with a satisfied smile before observing the changes in his body.

Feeling the vigour in his body as well as the strength of a young man, he couldn’t help but raise his head before letting out a burst of laughter.

"HA..."

"HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA."

"I should have done it sooner."

Although he could have performed this sacrificial ceremony at any time, he was waiting for the right moment. He wanted to wait till his life almost came to an end, and the number of people was sufficient.

He wanted to let these kids grow, bear more children, before performing this ceremony.

Unfortunately, the arrival of Yang Ze changed things completely.

But even though he had to sacrifice in advance, the old man was more than satisfied.

He had managed to gain his youth and an even greater control of the black fog.

Even though he was still a mortal with no traces of cultivation, he wasn’t worried about it in the slightest.

Now that the ritual was a success, he could simply perform it every forty or so years when he got sufficient children from the villagers stitched together with that pulsating flesh in the second cave.

The only thing he needed to be wary of was the massive black tiger beside him. But with the restriction of the heavenly oath, coupled with his naivety as well as the need for the techniques, he was sure that the damned thing wouldn’t take any drastic action against him.

And sure enough, Yang Ze, who was in the form of a black tiger, closed its golden eyes.

Yang Ze could feel his rapidly depleting internal energy, as well as mental energy, but he didn’t pay any attention to it. The image of Qing Cao’s lifeless face was etched in his mind.

For a moment, he couldn’t help but ask himself if it was worth it.

He left the old man alive because of his indecisiveness and unwillingness to kill. He even swore a heavenly oath to never harm him, just for the supposed techniques that could revive Cang Yue... Techniques that he had no idea worked or not.

And in doing so, the price he paid was the complete annihilation of fifty-plus children and a group of girls whom he had come to know dearly.

In that instant, Yang Ze’s heart trembled, and for the first time, he wondered if he had become the very person he hated.

Without even realising it, he had grown so selfish and bereft of emotions that he let the bunch of children die. Although he didn’t cause their death directly, he was still partly responsible for what happened.

He let this twisted world twist him, and the children were the ones who paid the price.

Taking a deep breath, when Yang Ze opened his eyes once again, he had grown quiet. He didn’t jump towards the man, he didn’t attack him... he didn’t even look in his direction.

Instead, he slowly walked towards the altar, standing directly beside the lifeless body of Qing Cao.

Looking at her frail body that was almost bones with no flesh present, his silence only grew.

"....."

"....."

The priest, on the other hand, who had regained his youth, felt a sense of unease as he watched the giant tiger step on the altar.

He had a feeling of dread, as if something terrifying was going to happen.

Although he was sure that he would be safe for the time being because of the heavenly oath’s restriction, he still took a few steps back, wanting to rush out of the cave,

But before he could even take a step forward, he saw the massive black tiger raise its head as a sorrowful howl escaped from its mouth.

*WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

The moment he heard the mournful howl, the priest’s heart almost leapt out of his throat as the sense of dread reached to its limit.

And under his gaze filled with terror, he saw the bodies of the children in the cave turn into dust as blue specs of light appeared in their places.

Blue lights that soon took the appearance of the children when they were alive...
