Chapter 146: Chapter 146: Somehow It Just Died

Kiana Sutton didn’t want to go back to The Montpellier Estates, nor did she want to return to her own home.

She didn’t know where she should go. She wandered aimlessly for quite a while before her phone rang.

When she saw it was Joy Morgan making a video call, Kiana hesitated for a few seconds, then picked up.

"Kiana, where are you? I sent you so many messages, why aren’t you replying?"

After rattling all that off, she finally noticed that Kiana was caught in the rain, and grew even more anxious. "Where exactly are you? I’ll come find you!"

Kiana told Joy where she was, and soon, Joy rushed over to her.

Joy took the sopping-wet Kiana Sutton to a hotel.

Knowing that Kiana was drenched and needed a change of clothes, she bought her an outfit from the mall.

"Kiana, go take a shower first. Whatever it is, we’ll talk slowly after you clean up."

Kiana nodded, grabbed the clothes, and headed into the bathroom.

Watching Kiana, Joy Morgan couldn’t help but worry.

The warm water washed over Kiana’s body, driving away her chills, but it couldn’t warm her frozen heart.

Just thinking of Ethan Sinclair’s cruel and indifferent face made her chest ache so badly she could hardly breathe.

No, now is not the time to think about Ethan Sinclair!

She couldn’t let herself be wronged like this.

Things had escalated so quickly—there was no way no one was fanning the flames from behind the scenes.

Thinking it over, there hadn’t been any scheduled visits to animal shelters in the foundation’s plans today, so why did the Sinclair Matriarch suddenly change her mind?

The Matriarch was always so kind to her—she’d never set her up. Then who could it be?

"Knock knock knock..."

There was a sudden knocking at the door.

"Kiana, are you done showering? I ordered you shrimp wontons, come out and have a bite."

Kiana had been in the shower a long time; Joy was worried she might not be okay and hurried to check on her.

When Kiana emerged from the bathroom unharmed, Joy finally let out a breath of relief.

"Come, come, you’ve been busy all day, probably haven’t eaten much—at least have something to eat."

Kiana nodded and obediently ate a little.

Seeing her able to eat, Joy finally felt more at ease.

"Kiana, even though all the news online has been taken down, the discussion hasn’t exactly stopped. Of course, I believe you two hundred percent. I might not be able to help much, but I can at least help you think of a plan."

Right now, the only person Kiana could confide in was Joy Morgan.

She told Joy everything that had happened in the past two days. After listening, Joy slammed her hand angrily on the table. "Isn’t it obvious? Someone just doesn’t want you to be Albatross Foundation’s vice president!"

Right then, Kiana received a reply to her WeChat message.

It was Rosalind Joyce who suggested the Matriarch go to the animal shelter.

So it was her.

She was already vice president of the foundation—why did she still want to set Kiana up?

"Oh come on, think about it—the Sinclair Matriarch treats you so well, who wouldn’t be jealous? Your first aunt went from vice president to president, your second aunt is still just a vice president. She’s pissed but doesn’t dare go against your first aunt, so she picks on you instead—bullies you because you’re the easy target."

Kiana frowned. "But how would she know I’m afraid of cats?" 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

"Somebody must’ve told her, but that’s not the key point. The main thing is, you can’t just let her keep bullying you. But all this is still just our guess. To clear your name, you need evidence."

Kiana nodded. Aside from her bottomless tolerance toward Ethan Sinclair, she had always abided by the rule: Don’t offend me and I won’t offend you; but if you harm me, I’ll pay you back a hundredfold.

If it was confirmed that Rosalind Joyce had set her up, there was no way Kiana would let it go so easily.

At the very same time—

A luxury car pulled up beneath an old, dilapidated apartment building.

Even after all these years married to Kiana, this was Ethan Sinclair’s first time coming to her family’s home.

The garden downstairs looked like it hadn’t been tended in ages, overrun with weeds.

The cement and bricks on the walls were stripped and peeling, with chunks missing—it looked more like a slum than anything.

Worst of all were the big dumpsters at the base of the building, overflowing with trash, reeking, swarming with flies and insects.

Ethan Sinclair’s brows knit together tightly—his obsessive cleanliness kicking in, making him extremely uncomfortable.

Noticing this, Connor Grant immediately said, "Fifth Master, perhaps you should wait in the car. I’ll go get Mrs. Sutton."

Ethan really couldn’t bear the place and nodded.

There was no elevator in the building; Connor ran upstairs.

Ethan Sinclair couldn’t imagine how Kiana could have grown up in a place like this.

Ten minutes later, Hannah Lowell—who’d especially changed her clothes—arrived at the luxury car.

"Fifth Master, Mrs. Sutton is here."

The window rolled down, and Ethan gave Hannah a chilly look. "Have you eaten yet?"

Hannah was stunned. What was this about?

Not only had Ethan come looking for her, but he was actually asking whether she’d eaten?

Had he changed personalities?

"N-no, not yet..."

"Get in!"

Hannah was still a bit lost. Instinctively, she reached for the back door, but Connor Grant invited her into the front passenger seat.

In a high-end restaurant, looking at the table full of exquisite dishes, Hannah was nervous. "E-Ethan... Mr. Sinclair, may I ask why you’re seeing me? Has something happened to Kiana?"

Ever since Kiana’s fingers were slashed and she nearly lost the use of both hands, Hannah Lowell had finally felt regret.

She could sell out her daughter for money, but Kiana was still her own flesh and blood—she couldn’t just let her be utterly ruined.

Kiana couldn’t speak anymore, and if her hands were ruined too, her life would really be over.

She wanted badly to check on Kiana, but Ethan wouldn’t let her get close to her daughter; she didn’t dare go and had no face to go either.

Ethan snorted softly. "Relax, she’s just fine!"

"Then... this..."

"I came to you today just to ask—do you know why Kiana is afraid of cats?"

Hannah’s heart instantly leaped at the question.

Ethan had never asked about Kiana before; now that he was showing concern, did it mean he’d started to care about her?

She’d always known—Kiana was so beautiful and smart, winning over Ethan was only a matter of time.

As for Ethan’s question...

"Actually, we don’t really know why Kiana is afraid of cats either. When she was little, she loved animals—she even had a cat."

Back then, Hannah Lowell had opposed letting young Kiana have a cat, but Gordon Sutton doted on his daughter. Despite Hannah’s scolding, he still let Kiana keep one.

"Later, that cat died for some reason. She got a terrible fever—over forty degrees—and after waking up, she couldn’t make a sound anymore. And ever since then, she’s been afraid of cats. Just seeing a cat would make her shake all over. There were several times she even fainted from fear."

Ethan Sinclair frowned slightly. The first time he found out Kiana was afraid of cats, he’d thought she just didn’t like them—he hadn’t expected it to be a deep-rooted issue from years ago.

So both her inability to speak and her fear of cats were probably connected to that cat she once owned.

"Did she ever say anything to you about it?"

Hannah Lowell shook her head. "No, later, her father..."

Whenever Gordon Sutton was mentioned, Hannah would sneak a glance at Ethan to check his expression. Seeing that Ethan looked grim but wasn’t angry, she continued, "Her father was worried she’d be sad, so he tried to buy her another cat. When she heard about it, she was so resistant and scared—she absolutely refused to have one."
