His Obsession Began After Losing Her-Chapter 73: The Culprit Was Caught
Chapter 73 - The Culprit Was Caught
At the new Chairman's office, Nigel had just finished reporting the weekly progress and the upcoming schedule for the month to Noran when Noran signaled him with a hand to stop talking.
Nigel fell silent, his keen eyes observing as his boss frowned at his phone.
Being quick-witted, Nigel deduced that Noran must have received some unpleasant news, most likely related to his beloved fiancée.
Sure enough, Shuri had just texted Noran, informing him that she wouldn't be joining him for dinner tonight because Karlene had organized a reunion dinner with their college friends.
Ever since Karlene returned to Sol City, she had been interfering with his relationship with Shuri.
She even volunteered to be Shuri's bodyguard after learning about the gruesome parcel Shuri had received a couple of days ago.
Noran's expression grew stormy as he put down his phone, his irritation palpable.
"How's the investigation going?" he asked in a cold voice.
"Mr. Lee, I was about to inform you that our intel team has identified the culprit responsible for sending Ms. Lee the parcel."
Nigel handed the file of documents to Noran respectfully.
"The man is Bernard Guss. He's a patient from Sung Medical Hospital who was recently released after being admitted to the psychiatric ward for half a year.
He suffers from antisocial personality disorder, which has led to a history of violent behavior, including harming animals. We had sent all this information to the police an hour ago, and they should have him arrested by now."
Noran's eyes darkened as he read through the file.
The more he read, the tighter his grip on the document became.
The paper crinkled under his fingers.
His jaw clenched, and a dangerous glint appeared in his eyes. "He's one of the patients who participated in Rin's animal-assisted therapy program?"
"Yes, Mr. Lee," Nigel confirmed.
"Our team has verified it. He had indeed participated in Miss Lee's animal-assisted therapy program at the hospital and showed significant improvement, so the hospital deemed him stable enough for release, but it seems they misjudged his condition."
Noran's brow furrowed deeper. "Did you find out why he targeted Rin?"
"Our men tried talking to him, but his mental state isn't stable," Nigel explained.
"It appears he thought sending such a gruesome parcel to Miss Lee would make her happy. We can't judge a mental patient by normal standards.
Their perception of reality is often distorted. Judging from his mental state, he will likely be readmitted to a high-security psychiatric facility. Miss Lee should be safe."
Despite Nigel's reassurances, Noran couldn't shake a lingering sense of unease.
Something about this case didn't sit well with him, but he couldn't pinpoint what it was.
"Continue to send men to watch over Rin, but make sure not to disrupt her daily life."
"Yes, Mr. Lee," Nigel replied.
"And about the situation at the headquarters." Nigel handed Noran the tablet he had been holding.
"Mr. Clifford asked if you have further instructions."
Noran glanced down at the screen, which displayed the headline news of New Valley in bold letters, "Scandal Unveiled: Sophia Carter Implicated in Murder Plot as City Erupts in Outrage."
At New Valley's side, while Roy was hospitalized, the Lloyd family and Roy's team had been working tirelessly to uncover and retaliate against whoever had attempted to frame and nearly kill Roy.
Roy was determined to get to the bottom of this; he was not someone who would let an offense go unpunished.
With unwavering resolve, he orchestrated a meticulous plan to exact his revenge and seek justice.
Roy had sent his men to visit the assassins, who were hired to kill Anne and Ian, in prison.
They used both intimidation and bribery, coercing the hitmen into revealing the identity of the mastermind behind the plot.
With the help of the Lloyd family's unparalleled intelligence network, they painstakingly pieced together the trail that led directly to Sophia.
Although the Carter family was a powerful and influential dynasty, the Lloyd family, which controlled the most powerful media company in the Western region, was not to be underestimated.
Armed with this knowledge, Roy and the Lloyds launched a strategic campaign to expose Sophia's nefarious activities.
Despite lacking concrete evidence, the Lloyd family leveraged their media empire to spread information about Sophia being the mastermind behind Anne's murder and the conspiracy to discredit Paragon's vice director.
They planted stories, released suggestive reports, and manipulated public opinion to turn the spotlight on Sophia's dark deeds.
The whispers grew louder within a few days, and soon the entire city was abuzz with rumors of Sophia's involvement.
As Noran watched Sophia emerging from the police station after questioning, her composed facade cracking under the intense scrutiny, he felt as if he were witnessing a scene from his past life all over again.
Like before, the media frenzy outside the police station was relentless, with reporters eagerly capturing every moment of Sophia's fall from grace.
However, Noran wasn't satisfied.
He knew Sophia would get away with this, just as she had in their past life, using the power and influence of the Carter family.
He needed to bring down the Carter family to properly ease his worries and ensure none of them could harm his precious Shuri in this life.
"Instruct Clifford to use this opportunity to short-sell the Carter Group stocks," Noran began in a firm voice.
"This should create market panic and drive their stock prices further down. Coordinate with our allies in the financial sector to amplify the effect. Spread rumors of internal instability and financial mismanagement within the Carter Group."
"Understood, Mr, Lee," Nigel replied, jotting down the points.
"When the time is right, I intend to initiate a covert buyout of the Carter Group's key assets and subsidiary companies."
Nigel swallowed and nodded.
To buy out the Carter Group?
His boss truly knew no fear.
The Carter Group was a formidable dynasty, having dominated the real estate investment sector for generations.
Their influence extended far and wide, with deep-rooted connections in politics, finance, and media.
To buy out the Carter Group was a monumental task, one that few would dare to even contemplate.
Yet, his boss spoke of it with a calm determination that left no room for doubt.
Nevertheless, Nigel was somewhat confident that only someone as incredible as Noran could achieve such an impossible feat.
Then, as Nigel waited for Noran to give him further instructions, Noran turned his attention back to his phone and said, "Find out where Rin is having dinner with her friends tonight."
Nigel blinked in surprise at the sudden change in directive but quickly composed himself and replied, "Yes, Mr. Lee."
Then, he immediately left to carry out the instruction.
Now alone in his office, Noran's stern expression softened as he began typing a reply to Shuri, "I'll see you tonight, Rin."
A subtle smile appeared on his lips as he sent the message.
Did Karlene think she could just steal Shuri away from him by using their friends as a shield?
Ha! How naïve.
...
At Ever Care Veterinarian Clinic.
Shuri had just finished performing surgery and returned to the staff resting room, where Karlene was playing with Snowball and Happy.
Snowball was licking Karlene's face, making her giggle.
She picked him up and nuzzled his nose with hers. "You are nothing like your despicable owner. How can you be this adorable?"
For some reason, Snowball and Karlene clicked very well and had become quite attached to each other.
As a result, Snowball had been spending more time around Karlene lately.
"Lene, you have been here the whole week. Aren't you getting bored?" Shuri asked, smiling at the sight.
"I'm your bodyguard, sis. It's my duty to be by your side all the time. I don't know when the bad guys will try to get to you," Karlene replied, her tone light but her eyes serious.
On one hand, Karlene wanted to protect her sister from harm; on the other, she cherished the opportunity to spend more time with her.
Working in New Valley had meant she rarely got to see her precious sister.
Now that Shuri was about to get married, Karlene regretted going to New Valley to become an attorney.
If she had known someone would steal Shuri's heart while she was away, she would have stayed in Sol City to practice law, despite it being less prestigious than New Valley.
"The police have already arrested the culprit. You don't have to protect me now, Lene."
Noran had informed Shuri in the morning about Bernard's arrest, and the police had dropped by in the early afternoon for questioning.
At first, Shuri was shocked to learn that it was a patient she knew.
Then, she was bothered by the fact that she had overlooked Bernard's progress during their group sessions.
If only she had been more vigilant, or if only she had her divine ability, would she have prevented Bernard from harming the poor kitten?
"I rarely get to see you, sis. Just let me spend more time with you," Karlene insisted.
Believing she couldn't dissuade Karlene, Shuri nodded.
"Alright, but try to go easy on Ran, okay? He truly cares for me."
"Why do I have a feeling you only care about him now and not me?" Karlene replied, sounding a bit jealous.
Over the past week, it had become clear to her that Shuri cared about Noran a lot more than she had expected.
Shuri let out a soft laugh and went over to hug Karlene by the arm.
She leaned in and said, "What are you saying, Lene? I care a lot about you too. You're my only sister. You know you're irreplaceable."
Shuri tried to comfort Karlene, and as expected, Karlene's expression softened, and she smiled slightly. "Do you think saying this will make me feel better? Unlike that despicable man, I'm not that easy to pacify."
But she didn't push Shuri away, clearly enjoying her sister's affection.
As they continued to engage in small talk, someone knocked at the door.
Sora slid it open and informed Shuri, "Dr. Lee, you have a guest waiting for you. He said his name is Sigmund Sung from the Sung Medical Hospital."
