Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition-Chapter 377 Story : The Heart of the Storm
Zara circled the glowing orb cautiously, its rhythmic hum vibrating in her chest. The device pulsated with unnatural energy, casting eerie shadows that danced across the walls of the dilapidated supply depot. Rowan stood guard, his weapon ready, while Kellan tinkered with a rusted console nearby, his brow furrowed in concentration.

"Careful, Zara," Rowan warned. "We don't know what we're dealing with here."
"No kidding," Zara muttered, crouching to examine the orb closer. Its surface was smooth, but tendrils of energy seemed to writhe beneath, like a living, breathing entity. Her gut told her this was no ordinary tech—it was something far more dangerous.
Kellan let out a low whistle. "This isn't just an energy source. It's a beacon."
"A beacon?" Zara repeated, her tone sharp.
"Yeah. It's sending signals," Kellan explained, gesturing to the flickering screen on the console. "This thing is relaying data, probably to the Zombie King's forces. That's how they're staying so coordinated."
Rowan's grip on his weapon tightened. "Then we shut it down. Now."
Kellan shook his head. "It's not that simple. If we destroy it recklessly, we could trigger a chain reaction that takes us all out—and anyone within a mile radius."
Zara straightened, her eyes narrowing. "Then find a way to disable it. Fast."
Kellan grinned, though his expression was tense. "You got it, boss."

As Kellan worked, Zara and Rowan scanned the room for any threats. The silence was oppressive, broken only by the faint crackle of the orb and the distant drip of water. Zara's instincts prickled, a nagging sense of unease settling over her.
"This is too quiet," she muttered.
Rowan nodded. "Agreed. Feels like we're being watched."
Almost as if on cue, a guttural snarl echoed from the shadows. Zara whipped around, her flashlight cutting through the darkness to reveal a pair of glowing eyes. More snarls followed, and figures began to emerge from the gloom—mutated zombies, their grotesque forms far more menacing than the ones they'd faced earlier.
"Hostiles incoming!" Zara shouted, raising her weapon.
The creatures charged, their speed and ferocity catching her off guard. Zara fired, her bullets finding their marks, but for every zombie that fell, two more seemed to take its place.
"Kellan, how's that shutdown coming?" Rowan yelled, slicing through a zombie with his knife.
"Working on it!" Kellan snapped, sweat dripping down his face as he furiously typed on the console. "Just keep them off me!"
Zara gritted her teeth, her focus razor-sharp as she fought off the horde. The room was chaos—gunfire, snarls, and the acrid stench of decaying flesh filled the air.
Finally, Kellan let out a triumphant cry. "Got it! The beacon's offline!"
The orb's glow dimmed, and the zombies faltered, their movements becoming sluggish. Zara didn't hesitate, dispatching the remaining creatures with swift precision.
As the last zombie fell, Zara turned to Kellan, breathing heavily. "Good work. Now let's get out of here before reinforcements show up."
Kellan smirked. "You got it."
But as they prepared to leave, the ground beneath them trembled, and a low, menacing growl reverberated through the chamber. Zara's stomach dropped.
"That's not good," Rowan said grimly.
