Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition-Chapter 422 Story : The Whispering Tunnels
The narrow, claustrophobic tunnel stretched endlessly before the team, dimly lit by ancient lanterns that flickered as though they were alive. The damp air was laced with the smell of earth and rust, mingling with the faint metallic tang of blood still clinging to their gear. Every footstep echoed like a ghostly whisper, reverberating off the uneven walls.
"This place gives me the creeps," Shadow muttered, scanning the path ahead with her rifle. "Who lights these lanterns? There shouldn't be anyone down here."
"Maybe they light themselves," Viper quipped, her voice low but tinged with unease.
Rook held up a fist, signaling the team to stop. The faint sound of movement echoed from deep within the tunnel—not the rhythmic steps of a march, but something erratic, dragging, and wet.
"Hold positions," he ordered, crouching as he motioned Ghost to check the scanner.
Ghost knelt beside him, her fingers deftly adjusting the settings. "Whatever's up ahead, it's organic," she whispered. "But it's not just one thing… there's a lot of them."
The team tightened their formation, weapons raised. The tunnel's oppressive silence returned, broken only by the faint drip of water somewhere in the distance.

Then, they saw it.
A shadow darted across the path ahead, low to the ground and unnervingly fast. Another followed, and another, moving with unnatural speed. The lanterns flickered violently as though reacting to the presence of these creatures.
"Eyes up," Rook warned, his voice steady. "Shadow, Viper—stay sharp. Ghost, stick close to Bulwark."
The first creature emerged from the darkness—a twisted humanoid figure, its skin stretched too tightly over its frame, with elongated limbs ending in razor-sharp claws. Its eyeless face twisted toward the light as if sensing it, and it let out a guttural screech that shook the tunnel walls.
"Contact!" Rook roared, opening fire.
Bullets tore through the creature, but its death seemed to signal the arrival of more. From the shadows, dozens of them poured into the tunnel, their movements unnervingly fluid as they crawled along the walls and ceiling.
"Hold the line!" Rook shouted, his shotgun booming as he stepped forward to protect the team.
Bulwark unleashed a torrent of gunfire, his heavy machine gun lighting up the narrow corridor. Shadow's sniper rifle picked off creatures that clung to the ceiling, while Viper's twin blades sliced through the ones that got too close.
"These things don't stop!" Shadow yelled, reloading.
Ghost frantically worked on her scanner, her hands shaking. "There's a heat signature ahead, just a few hundred meters! If we can reach it, it might be a way out—or at least a choke point!"
"Then we push through," Rook said grimly. "Stay close and move!"
The team advanced cautiously, cutting down wave after wave of the relentless creatures. The tunnel seemed to stretch endlessly, the flickering lanterns casting eerie shadows that made it impossible to tell how many enemies lurked ahead.
As they neared the heat signature Ghost had detected, the tunnel suddenly widened into a circular chamber. At its center stood a massive, rusted gate, its surface carved with intricate runes that glowed faintly.
"This is it!" Ghost said, her voice trembling with both relief and dread.
But as they approached, the creatures stopped their assault and withdrew into the shadows, their guttural growls fading into silence. The team froze, weapons ready, as the gate began to creak open on its own, revealing a swirling void of darkness beyond.
"Anyone else think this is a trap?" Viper muttered.

Rook stepped forward, his jaw clenched. "Trap or not, it's the only way forward. Stay ready."
As the team entered the void, the oppressive silence of the tunnels gave way to a low, resonating hum that vibrated in their bones. They had crossed into a new domain, and whatever lay ahead would test them like never before.
