Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition-Chapter 484: Story : The Inferno Vault
The air in the chamber thickened, the flickering firelight casting long, distorted shadows across the brick walls. The team stood still, the gravity of the moment sinking in. The archways surrounding them seemed to pulse with energy, as if the room itself was alive and eager for their decision.
The Velvet Abyss loomed at the far end of the chamber, swirling with tendrils of black flame that licked the edges of the archway. The warmth of the golden couch felt almost deceptive now, a cruel juxtaposition to the cold sweat forming on their brows.
Rook clenched his fists, stepping closer to the two keys laid on the table in the center of the room. "Shadow, Viper—describe your keys again. Every detail matters."
Shadow held up the obsidian key. "Black as night. Carved with precision, sharp edges. Cold to the touch. Feels... unnatural, like it's rejecting me."
Viper displayed the silver key adorned with the ruby. "This one feels the opposite. Warm. It's lighter, almost comforting. But that's too obvious, isn't it? Feels like a trap."
Bulwark's deep voice rumbled. "The Abyss doesn't strike me as the kind of place to hand out easy wins. Whatever we choose, we better be prepared for hell."
"Quiet," Ghost hissed, his head cocked to one side. His eyes scanned the brickwork. "The walls... they're speaking."
The team froze. Subtle whispers emanated from the arches, barely audible but undeniably there. Words overlapped, forming an incomprehensible chorus that grew louder with every passing second. Rook motioned for silence, tilting his head to listen.
"...only through unity... only through sacrifice..."
Rook's jaw tightened. He turned to his team. "It's not about the keys. It's about us. The room wants us to fight, to break apart. That's the test."
Viper smirked, twirling the silver key between her fingers. "Guess we're not giving it the satisfaction, then."
Shadow glanced at the abyss. "What if it's both? What if both keys are needed, and we've been overthinking this?"
The team exchanged glances. Rook stepped forward, taking both keys in his hands. The moment he touched them, the fire in the fireplace blazed higher, roaring with an intensity that made the entire room shake.

"Together," Rook commanded. "We face this as one."
He inserted both keys into the archway, one on the left and one on the right. The room went silent—eerily, oppressively silent. Then, with a deafening crack, the Velvet Abyss erupted into a golden inferno. The swirling darkness was replaced by flames that illuminated the chamber in brilliant light.
A path began to form within the fire, leading deeper into the unknown. The whispers ceased, replaced by a single, clear voice.
"Worthy."
Rook turned to his team. "We move. Stay sharp. Whatever's ahead, we face it together."
The team stepped forward, leaving the chamber behind. The warmth of the golden light enveloped them, but none were fooled—it was merely the calm before the storm.
