Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition-Chapter 514 : Story 514: Shadows in the Wasteland
The moon hung high in the night sky, casting an eerie glow over the desolate forest. Bare trees, stripped of their leaves, reached skyward like skeletal hands. The air was damp, filled with the stench of decay and the faint crackle of distant footsteps. ZETU stood at the forest's edge, their silhouettes barely visible in the dense mist.
"Eyes up, team," Captain Marcus Kane ordered, his voice a low rumble. "We've got movement ahead."
Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett raised her thermal scope and scanned the area. Through the lens, she could see shambling figures scattered among the trees. "It's not a horde—yet. But there are too many to take on quietly."
Ethan "Brain" O'Connor tapped furiously on his tablet, connected to a drone circling above. The live feed displayed a grim scene: dozens of zombies gathering in the heart of the forest. In the center stood a lone figure—motionless, tall, and eerily composed. Unlike the others, it wasn't decayed. Its pale, almost translucent skin seemed to shimmer under the moonlight.
"That's new," Ethan muttered. "It's like… it's leading them."
"Great," Jenna "Blaze" Hart quipped, adjusting the nozzle on her flamethrower. "First a hulking monster, now a zombie commander. What's next? Flying ones?"
"Let's hope not," Kane replied, signaling for the team to move in.

As they advanced, the sound of crunching leaves beneath their boots was masked by the faint groans of the undead. Detective Lila "Huntress" Navarro moved ahead, her steps silent as she melded with the shadows. "I'll scout closer. Cover me."
Huntress crept toward the center of the gathering, her heart pounding. The lone figure turned its head as if sensing her presence. She froze, her breath caught in her throat. The creature's glowing eyes locked onto hers, and it let out an unearthly shriek that echoed through the forest.
"Contact!" Huntress yelled, firing her pistols as she backpedaled.
The forest erupted into chaos. Zombies emerged from every direction, their moans growing louder as they converged on ZETU.
"Blaze, clear the path!" Kane shouted, firing his shotgun.
Blaze unleashed a torrent of fire, creating a burning wall that temporarily held back the horde. Shield stepped in front, his riot shield absorbing the brunt of the attackers as the team regrouped.
"That thing's controlling them!" Riley shouted, taking aim at the pale figure. Her first shot grazed its shoulder, but it barely reacted.
"We need to take it out, now!" Kane barked.
Huntress, now back with the group, pointed toward the creature. "It's too fast. We need to box it in."
Ethan deployed a drone, which zipped through the forest, distracting the creature. "I'll keep it occupied. Take the shot!"
Riley steadied her rifle, her finger hovering over the trigger. The creature darted left and right, its movements erratic. Finally, it paused, locking eyes with Riley. She fired, the bullet piercing its head.
The creature collapsed, and the zombies froze before crumbling to the ground.
The forest fell silent once more.
"This is getting worse," Kane muttered. "We need answers, and fast."
The team moved deeper into the forest, the shadows of the unknown looming ever closer.
