Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition-Chapter 552: Story : Graveborn Uprising
The aftermath of the mausoleum's explosion left the cemetery cloaked in a dense fog. Lightning still cracked overhead, briefly illuminating the destroyed mausoleum. The eerie silence that followed was short-lived. A low, guttural moaning echoed through the cemetery, growing louder with each second.
Captain Marcus Kane scanned the perimeter, his shotgun ready. "Stay sharp, team. Whatever's left, it's not done with us."
The ground beneath their feet trembled slightly, sending ripples through the rainwater pooled around them. Derek "Shield" Coleman tightened his grip on his riot shield, stepping forward to create a defensive barrier for the team. "Uh, Cap, I don't like the sound of this."
Suddenly, the muddy earth erupted. Decayed hands clawed their way out of the ground as a wave of undead began to rise. But these weren't ordinary zombies—their rotting flesh emitted a faint green glow, and their movements were unnervingly fast and coordinated.
"Graveborn," muttered Lila "Huntress" Navarro, her dual pistols already firing at the nearest creature. "These ones are stronger. The altar wasn't their source; it was their trigger."
Ethan "Brain" O'Connor's voice crackled over the comms. "Captain, I'm picking up a massive energy surge beneath the cemetery. These Graveborn aren't random—they're being controlled."
"Controlled by what?" Kane demanded as he blasted a zombie lunging toward him.
"Unknown, but it's big. Whatever it is, it's right below you."
Jenna "Blaze" Hart unleashed a wave of fire, creating a temporary barrier to slow the advancing horde. "We can't hold this position forever, Cap. If we don't find that source, we're toast!"
Kane nodded. "Brain, pinpoint the source. Shield, Blaze, hold the line. Huntress and Quick Shot, you're with me."
Ethan's drone zipped through the fog, scanning the ground for any anomalies. The feed revealed a large sinkhole near the far edge of the cemetery, where the glowing energy seemed to be concentrated. "Got it! There's an underground chamber beneath the sinkhole. That's where the signal is strongest."
Marcus led Lila and Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett toward the sinkhole, weaving through the chaos as the undead swarmed around them. Riley's sniper rifle rang out, picking off zombies in their path with precision.
Reaching the edge of the sinkhole, they peered down into the darkness. A faint green glow illuminated a cavern below, where a pulsating, grotesque mass writhed. It looked like a heart made of rotting flesh, its veins spreading out into the surrounding earth, pumping the energy that animated the Graveborn.
"Quick Shot, cover us from here. Huntress, we're going down," Kane ordered.
The two rappelled into the cavern, the stench of decay overwhelming. As they approached the pulsating mass, its "veins" began to react, shooting tendrils toward them.
Lila dodged nimbly, unloading her pistols into the grotesque heart, but the bullets barely slowed it. "We need Blaze down here!"
Kane grabbed his comm. "Blaze, bring the heat!"
Above, Jenna grinned. "On my way." She ignited her flamethrower, ready to end the Graveborn uprising once and for all.
