I am the Only Son of Nyx-Chapter 47: Aftermath
The battle between the newly formed Team Crius and Team Coeus continued.
A quarter mile away from the battlefield, two High Angels were duking it out with everything they had. Matilda and Layra were now riddled with wounds. Considering they were trapped in close-quarter combat for a while, the battle should’ve ended long ago.
But Layra gave Matilda a big surprise.
Despite only having a bow, Layra is not weak in a direct confrontation like this.
Apollo’s Legacy Skill, Divine Marksman, enhanced Layra’s eyesight and also her senses.
It significantly helped her in being a terrifying bowman, but it also helped her in a fist-fight.
Every missed attack from Matilda gave her the opportunity to shoot one or two arrows. And with her nimble movements, missing became a common occurrence, and Matilda paid dearly, judging from the scratches all over her body.
However, Athena is the Goddess of Combat. Her Supernals reflected exactly that.
Clang—!
Layra sniped the golden sword from Matilda’s hand as she was about to swing.
But that didn’t stop the attack as a knee hammered into Layra’s side, breaking her ribs. Blood seeped out through her gritted teeth as she quickly kicked Matilda’s chest. She wasn’t aiming to push Matilda, but rather, propel herself backward.
She slid across the ground and drew her bow, firing an arrow that was blocked by the shield.
To her surprise, Matilda also did the same thing.
Matilda leaped and curled her body behind the shield. And when the arrow struck the shield with a deafening clang, she was propelled to the other side. She used the momentum to sprint away, zig-zagging through the trees and bushes.
’She’s running away?!’ Layra thought in surprise.
Pivoting her body, she took a perfect archer stance and aimed at Matilda.
She inhaled deeply through her nose and exhaled through her mouth. Once she was ready, she fired a pinpoint shot. The arrow flew even faster, screeching through the air like a bullet, and reached the back of Matilda’s head.
Bullseye.
But at the last second, the shield got in the way and blocked the arrow.
Matilda spun forward and, with a ferocious grunt, threw her shield straight at Layra.
It was backed with anger and frustration.
Seeing the spinning shield that promised death, Layra ducked in time. It slammed hard into the tree where her head had been, carving a five-inch gash into the bark. A moment slower—and she would have been decapitated.
Layra looked ahead again and clicked her tongue in displeasure, "She escaped."
She fell to her knees.
The bow of light in her hand evaporated as she panted heavily, holding her stomach in pain.
It took her a minute to stand back up again as she recalled that the battle was still going. Layra painfully made her way back to the battlefield. Once the adrenaline faded, she was left with the damage that her body suffered.
All she could do was focus on taking one step after the other and make her way back.
She arrived back on the battlefield and saw the aftermath.
Everything was a mess. Several corpses littered the ground, but fortunately, they were from Team Coeus, not theirs. And there are several other students on the side who were mending their wounds. One of them saw Layra coming back and wounded.
Namira saw her.
And though hesitated a bit, she decided to approach.
Layra raised her gaze to look at Namira, and then looked away, "How did it go? How many casualties?"
"Only one of ours fell." Namira shifted to look at the others. "Because of the initial shock and fear the Lesser Angel struck, Team Coeus was in shambles. A handful tried to fight; the rest ran. And with Snake and Matilda absent, they had no spine to rally around."
Her smile surfaced slowly. "Aaran and some others are chasing the runners now."
It was done. Team Crius had won.
Or at least, that’s what Namira thought, but Layra bellowed in utter frustration.
Namira recoiled, visibly taken aback by this.
"W-What’s wrong...?" She asked hesitantly. "Is there something I’m missing?"
"Matilda got away, and she can still rally the runners. I wanted to kill her—but she’s stronger than I anticipated," Layra bit her lower lip until she tasted blood. She didn’t really know why Matilda ran, but she was thankful. Had that not been the case, she might’ve died.
That punch to the rib hurt her more than she thought.
"And where is the Lesser Angel?" Layra asked. Then, her eyes widened in panic. "We should find him! If Lion survives, we’re doomed!"
Realizing the situation wasn’t as sunny and as rainbow as she thought, Namira quickly acted.
She rallied the students who could still fight and scoured the area in search of Kai.
All of them saw Kai attack Lion first before the overgrowth swallowed the two of them. And considering how strong Kai was, with them seeing it first-hand, they were confident that he could win against Lion.
But even so, this was Lion.
The student who dominated everyone he came across.
It’s unwise to treat him lightly.
For almost half an hour, Team Crius searched for Kai or Lion. But found neither. All they find is the devastation that was left behind. Layra decided to stop the search for the time being and occupy Team Coeus’s main camp that they found.
A product of Team Coeus’ arrogance.
Having dominated Ixos, they didn’t even bother hiding their main camp.
Nobody was there, and it also had many resources that made Team Crius’ mouths water.
Not to mention, any surviving student from Team Coeus might even return to the main camp. Layra and the others were there to take them down. This place was perfect for them. At least until either Kai or Lion returned.
For the rest of the night, Team Crius was recuperating.
Snake was still alive, but he woke up to enchanted ropes and four students.
He wouldn’t be able to escape.
Frankly, Layra was tempted to kill Snake right there, but she couldn’t make the decision. Right now, Kai was their leader, and the team could only wait for him to return. She would make sure that the other students are on the same page.
That’s the least she could do after what Kai did for her.
Meanwhile, inside one of the tents.
"You’re awake," Aaran looked down at an unconscious feminine man. "I thought you were a girl, so I asked a girl to tend you. But you turned out to be a guy. Bad mutation, huh?" A weak smile reached his face.
Dorian blinked his eyes and adjusted to the surroundings.
He remembered getting knocked out after a situation happened that got Lion’s attention.
And now, he was here.
"W-Who the fuck are you?" Dorian cursed despite still feeling fuzzy. "And where am I?"
"Never thought you’d be the cursing type."
"Why? Because I looked like a pretty girl, I couldn’t curse? Fuck you. And fuck your mom."
"Alright, alright. My name is Aaran, and I’m in your team."
"Bullshit. This is Team Coeus’ tent," Dorian tried sitting up, but couldn’t.
"Don’t move too much." Aaran kept Dorian pinned with a hand against his chest. "Someone flooded your mana flow with external energy. It shocked your Divine Lock. I don’t know who did it, but the shock is severe. You need proper rest."
Recalling the man who did it to him, Dorian instinctively reached for his crotch.
He felt immense relief when he felt that his manhood was still there. Thank Zeus.
"You... I haven’t smelled your scent before," Dorian narrowed his eyes. "You are from Team Hyperion, aren’t you?"
Not too long ago, he was dragged into Team Coeus’ main camp.
He saw the students there and also made sure to remember their scents.
But he didn’t recognize Aaran, so he must not be the barbarians under Lion.
"Yes, I’m from Team Hyperion."
"Then how the fuck are we here?"
"Kai visited us and absorbed us into Team Crius," Aaran pointed at the red armband around his arm, which Dorian had only seen now. "He led us to fight Team Coeus. We won, but Kai, who fought Lion, hadn’t returned."
Dorian’s eyes widened.
’Just as I thought,’ He smiled inwardly. ’He’s hard to kill.’
Seeing Rakha’s head was devastating, but he knew deep inside that Kai was still alive out there.
Out of the four of them, Kai is the hardest to kill due to his unnatural strength and also the Legacy Imprint that made his presence as light as a feather. Hearing this was confirmation of that. Kai was alive, and he brought the underworld to Team Coeus.
"And what about those bitches? Matilda and Abigail?" Dorian asked with a furious glint in his eyes. Everything that happened happened the way it was because of those two traitors. "Did they die?"
"Matilda fled, unfortunately, and we couldn’t track her down." Aaran sighed. "And I don’t know about this Abigail you speak of."
Dorian nodded and leaned back comfortably.
Seems like everything has been sorted out.
"Why do you look so relaxed?" Aaran asked, confused at the reaction.
"And why do you think I need to be tense?"
"Matilda might rally what remains of Team Coeus. And with the Lesser Angel and Lion both unaccounted for... There’s still a chance Lion won that fight. If he comes back, he won’t leave any of us alive. He’d slaughte us for good."
Dorian chuckled.
In hindsight, that was the logical concerns for the new Team Crius.
But he knew Kai more than them.
"You don’t know Kai. That moron is reckless at times, but he’s sharp and is always overly careful," He turned to look at Aaran in the eyes—and smirked. "If he decided to make his move, then he’s almost certain that he’d win against Lion.
"So, relax," Dorian closed his eyes. "Fuck your girl or something. He’ll come back soon."
As much as Aaran wanted to believe that, it was hard.
He had heard it multiple times from other strong students that Lion is nothing, but all of them were now ten feet underground. All of them are dead. Believing that this time would really be different is hard.
Just then, a commotion could be heard outside.
A sharp intake of breath from the students—then another. A shiver raced down Aaran’s spine, his thoughts already spiraling toward the worst. Dorian, however, didn’t share his worry. Not in the slightest.
"Go on," He said, a quiet certainty in his voice. "Check it out. I think you’ll be surprised."
Aaran quickly rushed out of the tent and looked at where the commotion came from.
He saw Layra and a couple of other students. He quickly went over, ready to fight.
But as he closed in, his eyes were pulled to the tree line.
A figure could be seen walking out, and it wasn’t Lion.
