Chapter 557: Chapter 557 Sick

"Everyone take your own seat," he said calmly, his dark eyes sweeping across the room.

His gaze landed on Boo, who was still floating near the ceiling in a state of panic.

Boo froze mid-float.

Then, in a move that shocked everyone, he immediately dropped down and sat on his desk.

Not hovered above it. Not floated beside it. Actually sat.

On the desk.

Like a normal child.

Luna’s jaw dropped.

Drake blinked three times in rapid succession.

Felix leaned forward so fast he nearly fell off his chair.

Even Vlad Jr.’s perfect composure cracked slightly, his eyebrows rising.

Boo never sat on furniture. Boo considered sitting to be "beneath ghost dignity." He had once given a five-minute lecture about how ghosts were "vertical beings by nature" and that chairs were "traps for the living designed to capture souls."

And now he was just sitting on his chair. Like a peasant.

Boo noticed everyone staring and crossed his arms defensively.

"What?" he muttered. "He looked at me. It was a scary look. Very intense. Through glasses. Glasses make eyes bigger. More scary."

Dante ignored the commentary and continued calmly.

"Your teacher is not well today, so I will be taking class on her behalf."

Silence.

Complete, absolute, pin-drop silence.

The kind of silence that usually only happened when someone said something truly world-shattering.

Boo’s mouth opened slowly.

Then every single child except two started talking at once.

"Wait what—"

"Teacher is WHAT?"

"Sick?!"

"Not well?!"

"IS SHE DYING?!"

Drake shot up from his chair so fast it tipped over behind him. "TEACHER IS SICK?!"

Luna’s ears flattened against her head. "How sick?! Like sniffles sick or bed rest sick?!"

Rocky’s eyes went huge and watery. "Does she need medicine?! I can find medicine! Rocks have healing properties!"

Kelpie splashed water everywhere in panic. "Should we bring get-well gifts?! I can draw pictures! Water and fish pictures!"

Felix sat up straight for the first time all morning, his golden eyes sharp. "What are the symptoms? How long has this been going on? Is she receiving proper medical care?"

Vlad Jr. stood immediately, his small hands clasping together. "Sir, is there anything we can do to assist? We are very worried."

And Boo shot up from his desk so fast he hit the ceiling.

"TEACHER IS SICK?!" he shrieked, bouncing off the ceiling and spinning in frantic circles. "THIS IS A CRISIS! THIS IS AN EMERGENCY! THIS IS THE WORST DAY IN HISTORY! Who will bring her soup?! Who will read her stories?! Who will make sure she has enough blankets?! Ghosts are excellent at blanket arranging! I volunteer! I VOLUNTEER!"

The chaos was absolute.

Dante stood at the front of the room, completely still, watching the explosion with an expression of mild interest.

The children continued shouting over each other.

"Is she in bed?!"

"Does she have tea?!"

"Should we send cards?!"

"I can draw a dragon! Dragons are healing!"

"Rocks are healing! I will bring rocks!"

"Bananas are healing! Ghosts know these things!"

"Water is healing! I will splash gently!"

"Soup! We need soup!"

"WHO WILL MAKE SOUP?!"

Dante waited.

The chaos continued.

Boo was now bouncing off the walls like a pinball.

Through all of this, Lucien and Sable sat completely still.

They did not panic. They did not even look particularly worried.

Sable was calmly swinging his legs under his desk, watching the chaos with mild interest like it was a nature documentary.

Lucien had his chin resting on his hand, observing his classmates with the faintest hint of amusement.

They had breakfast with Alina this morning. They had seen her sitting at the table, drinking tea, looking perfectly fine. They had watched her kiss the top of Sable’s head and ruffle Lucien’s hair. They had heard her say, "I will be watching you today, so be good for your father."

They knew she was okay.

So while everyone else panicked, they simply sat there, enjoying the show.

Finally Dante raised one hand.

The classroom fell silent instantly.

Boo froze mid-bounce and dropped to the floor with a thump.

"She is a little sick," Dante said calmly. "She needs one day of rest. That is all."

Silence. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

Then Drake raised his hand.

"Yes?"

"One day? Just one day? She will be back tomorrow?"

"Yes."

"Oh." Drake slowly picked up his fallen chair. "Okay. That’s manageable. One day is manageable."

Luna’s ears perked up. "Just one day? Not dying?"

"Not dying."

"Oh." She sat back down. "Good. I was going to bite someone if she was dying."

Rocky wiped his eyes quickly. "Just resting? She’s okay?"

"Just resting."

Rocky nodded, still sniffling slightly but calmer.

Kelpie stopped splashing. "She will be back tomorrow for sure? Promise?"

"Promise."

Kelpie beamed through his worry.

Felix leaned back in his chair, though his eyes were still sharp. "Acceptable. We will require confirmation of her return tomorrow."

Vlad Jr. relaxed his posture slightly. "That is reassuring, sir. Thank you."

Boo floated up slowly from the floor.

"Just to be clear," he said seriously, "she is not dying? Not even a little bit dying? Because if she was dying, I would need to plan a funeral, and funerals are expensive."

"She is not dying."

"Okay good. Ghosts cannot afford funerals."

Dante looked at them all for a moment.

Then his gaze flickered briefly to Lucien and Sable.

They were still sitting calmly, watching everything with quiet amusement.

Sable caught his eye and gave him a small wave and a smile.

Lucien just nodded once, as if to say, "You’ve got this."

Dante looked away and turned to the attendance sheet.

He picked up the pen and began marking names, his movements calm and precise. The soft scratching of pen against paper was the only sound in the completely silent classroom.

Every single child sat perfectly still.

No one moved.

No one whispered.

No one even breathed too loudly.

Drake had his hands folded on his desk like he was in church. Luna sat with her back straight as a ruler, her tail wrapped tightly around her leg. Kelpie had somehow managed to stop his water from splashing entirely, a small miracle. Felix was actually sitting properly for once, not leaning, not sleeping, not smirking, just sitting.

Boo remained on his desk.

Still sitting.

Not floating.

It was unprecedented.

Vlad Jr. maintained his perfect posture, but even he seemed slightly more rigid than usual.

The silence stretched on as Dante continued writing, completely ignoring nine pairs of eyes fixed on him.

Then a tiny sound.

So small it was almost unnoticeable.

A hiccup.

Followed by a soft sniffle.

Every child’s head turned slowly, searching for the source.

Another sniffle.
