I Became an Artist in a Romantic Comedy-Chapter 107
The break flew by in an instant. As I headed to school with a sulky expression, a familiar back of the head came into view.
“Hey. Where’s your girlfriend? Why are you alone?”
I quickened my steps and tapped Lee Do-Yoon’s shoulder with my finger.
It was rare to meet him right at the school gate, and even stranger not to see his girlfriend, Baek Yoo-Seol.
Was the sun going to rise in the west tomorrow? Why did this new semester already feel ominous?
“Huh? Oh. Ha-Eun. Seol’s off doing volunteer work today. She said she’d probably be back in the afternoon.”
“…She’s doing volunteer work?”
“Haha. Why is everyone around me so surprised by that?”
No, seriously, think about it. Knowing Baek Yoo-Seol’s personality, she’s not exactly the type to help anyone other than Lee Do-Yoon.
Did she mature a bit after growing older?
“I could do volunteer work, too.”
“You? Volunteer work?”
Lee Do-Yoon looked at me like I’d grown an extra head.
He didn’t question Baek Yoo-Seol, but when it was me?
Staring at him incredulously, he awkwardly averted his gaze with a sheepish laugh.
“I’ve done donation volunteer work a lot, okay?”
“Oh, fair enough.”
We shared a laugh as we headed into the school together.
Since we were in different departments, we eventually had to part ways, but my mouth never stayed shut.
“Eun’s here?”
“Yeah, I’m here… What’s this?”
A new semester meant a fresh start. It also meant new classes and new friends.
Which explained why there were so many new kids swarming around Hong Ye-Hwa.
The funnier part was that they were asking her to draw something.
“Busy right from the morning, huh?”
“Haha…”
Hong Ye-Hwa let out a weak laugh, her hands not stopping even as she replied to me.
“It’s not that hard. I’m just bored anyway.”
Shrugging her shoulders, she brushed her red hair back, which drew the gaze of some of the boys.
One sharp glare from me, and they quickly looked away.
“Huh?”
“Never mind. If there’s anything left, give it to me. I’ve got nothing to do anyway.”
“Thanks.”
She smiled softly and handed over half of the requests.
It didn’t seem like much, and I figured I could finish before the morning assembly.
‘But aren’t they in the art department, too? Why are they asking her for drawings?’
The thought crossed my mind briefly, but then I brushed it off.
It’s like doctors getting treated by other doctors when they get sick.
Same logic, probably.
Besides, wasn’t this the kind of moment I’d always imagined?
This is what artists are for, right?
…Or not?
The requests were surprisingly diverse and creative.
Of course, the only tool I had was a single 4B pencil.
If there was a flaw, that would be it. I could ask Hong Ye-Hwa or the others to lend me something, but that just didn’t feel cool.
A true artist doesn’t blame their tools.
…That’s a lie. True artists do blame their tools.
I think I’ve said this before, but whatever.
The reason I didn’t bring or keep art supplies at school was simple.
It was annoying.
There were always missing colors when I needed them. And if I checked, parts of my case would be empty.
I didn’t think the students here would do that, but you never know.
Unintentionally or otherwise, hands sometimes move on their own.
“Here.”
“Thanks!”
After handing off the last drawing, I stretched my arms. Checking the time, there were five minutes left before the assembly.
I figured our homeroom teacher this year would probably be Ms. Lee Ah-Reum again.
But my prediction was shattered by the person who walked in.
“Haha. Hello, everyone?”
…What’s this? Why are you here?
It felt like I hadn’t seen her in forever. Standing there was Seol Yoon, the promotions manager.
Did she have a fight with Ahn Dae-Min or something? She had no reason to be here.
Caught off guard, I made awkward eye contact with her.
Then, with a bright smile, she opened her mouth.
“Lee Ha-Eun!”
“…You know her?”
“No. But you know her, too.”
Hong Ye-Hwa’s sharp gaze pierced me, but I still answered.
“…Ma’am?”
“Lee Ha-Eun, you little—”
“Oh heavens, why did the sky give us someone like Lee Ha-Eun—”
Jeez. Why does this happen every semester? Don’t they ever get tired?
To make matters worse, even the kids I just handed drawings to were throwing playful insults my way.
You really can’t trust classmates these days.
“Oops!”
“You’re late, you know?”
Seol Yoon realized her mistake and clapped a hand over her mouth, but there was no stopping the students’ eyes from landing on me.
“Hehe… I just got excited since it’s been so long.”
“…Please start the assembly.”
At last, the morning assembly began.
I had plenty to say, but this wasn’t the place to say it.
When it ended, I walked up to Seol Yoon.
“You’re heading to the faculty office anyway, right? Let’s go together.”
“Huh? Is that okay?”
“Of course not.”
“…?”
Her face turned puzzled, but when I looked closely, she was chewing on something.
“…You’re still snacking all the time, I see.”
“Mm!”
She proudly puffed out her chest, which only made me sigh.
“So what brings you to the school? You graduated already.”
This wasn’t a reunion. What was she doing here?
“Oh, right. I forgot to explain.”
How do you forget something like that… I sighed again and opened the door to the faculty office.
It was still quiet, with other classes not yet finished.
I grabbed an empty chair and sat next to Ms. Lee Ah-Reum’s desk—no, Seol Yoon’s temporary spot.
“Hmm! Where should I start?”
“Obviously, by explaining why you’re here…”
Why did I always feel drained when talking to her?
“Oh, that’s easy! Ah-Reum’s on a short business trip! I’m here as a temporary teacher, or something like that?”
“Ah…”
The moment she said it, I felt an instant headache. I pulled out my phone and called the familiar name in my contacts.
“…Where did you go?”
[Oh, right. I forgot to tell you.]
Seriously, the senior and the junior are exactly alike.
“At least say something before you leave.”
[Haha. Were you worried?]
“Well, yeah? You were eating dinner at my house just a week ago.”
[…Don’t bring that up. Anyway, I’ll be gone for a while. It’s a long trip.]
A long trip, huh?
[I wasn’t supposed to tell you, but…]
“Then don’t. I don’t want to stress myself out listening to it.”
[Hehe. Then why’d you ask?]
Ms. Lee Ah-Reum laughed softly. I glanced over at Seol Yoon, who was munching away, and sighed again.
I figured I might as well ask.
“Is this because of Rou Hua? I know.”
[Huh? How’d you figure that out?]
Of course, if it’s a long trip, it has to be international.
It wasn’t like any major competitions had started, so what else could it be?
“Put Rou Hua on the phone, please.”
[Hold on a sec!]
I compromised with my master to call her by name when others were around. It would be weird to call someone “Master” when they were my age.
It was a one-sided compromise, though.
[What is it?]
“What are you making Ms. Lee Ah-Reum do this time?”
[What else? She’s helping with the work you didn’t want to do.]
“…You mean the Angel project?”
[Yeah. I figured it’d be good to have someone assisting.]
This self-centered… My master’s personality really was the polar opposite of her past life.
Bring back my calm, sage-like master. What happened to her?
“Still, you can’t just take away someone who has a full-time job. The class was practically drooling when she walked in.”
[…Didn’t expect that. My bad.]
“Whatever. So, what am I supposed to do?”
Even though I protested, I couldn’t refuse my master’s requests.
[Prepare yourself for the Great Shift. You’ll need to take part.]
“…Do I really have to? Sometimes it’s better to keep things low-key.”
[The world has the right to know. Once it’s announced, I’ll handle everything afterward.]
“And by who?”
[Who else? I’ll do it.]
How cool of her. I had nothing else to say.
Once the Angel project was complete, the newly reborn masterpieces would be revealed worldwide.
Not my idea—my master’s. I was just the representative who would present it to the world.
Of course, I’d assist along the way, but it was ultimately her judgment.

‘Still, I’ll have to go eventually.’
As she said before, only I could revise the masterpieces.
If it was just my master and Ms. Lee Ah-Reum, it would take ages.
So whether I liked it or not, I had to step up.
“Fine. I’ll relax while I’m still in Korea.”
[Do that. Oh, one more thing—you can decide what to do with this.]
“Huh? What is it?”
What was she up to now?
[There was no dragon in Angel. And none in Phoenix either…]
“…”
Master. Forget deciding—I think I need to head straight to France.
I knew this day felt ominous from the very start.
