I Became My Healer Elf Character-Chapter 80: Stories Shared
They ended up eating fish again for breakfast. Of course, this was no surprise to Hikari. It was one of the only sources of protein around the island. The villagers made a fish soup, but it did contain an egg from one of the birds flying around. The seasonings gave the soup a mixture of savory and sweet flavors.
Sarrah grinned at the group from across the table. "Did you like the food? There's more for those of you who are still hungry."
Hikari shook her head. "Thanks, but I am good for now."
"You don't have much of an appetite? That must be why you look thin."
Kurayami held out her bowl. "Master, I would like some more of this soup."
Sarrah chuckled at the silly dragon. "How many bowls is that already? Four?"
"I simply eat where the master cannot. Besides, I need it to maintain my muscular figure."
Everyone in Hikari's group looked at the dragon with narrowed eyes, knowing that there was no way she needed to eat the food. In fact, Hikari was sure that even if the dragon didn't eat for a while, her abs would still be there, and her muscles would remain toned.
Either way, Samala's mother handed the dragon another bowl. "Well, there's still plenty more. The men gathered a huge haul yesterday, so you're quite lucky."
"Right," Darrin said, "now that y'all have eaten, we wish to hear a story. Do you have any tales travelers? You must have come across something interesting in your journeys, and the kids are eager for a story."
Hikari waved her hands. "I'm no good at telling stories." She looked at Kurayami and Ayase for help.
The dragon puffed up her chest. "Do not worry, Master. I am the best storytelling dragon."
Hikari patted her head, and the dragon's tail waved back and forth behind the chair. "Alright, my great storytelling dragon. Go right ahead."
Kurayami stood up on her chair and cleared her throat. All of the villagers tuned into her eagerly.
"This is the story of how Master saved a whole kingdom from ruin."
Realizing that it was going to get embarrassing, Hikari buried her head into her arms, and tried to tune the dragon's voice out.
"Master and her most faithful and most beloved dragon were out on an adventuring quest. The master annihilated an entire dungeon with a single spell! Bright light descended from the heavens, and the dungeon was no longer. However, trouble was brewing in the capital from which they'd taken the quest."
"In the capital of…"
"Amalin," Mizuko said.
The dragon continued. "Right! In the capital of Amalin, a bad and scary demon started attacking the people! He used the opportunity when the master was a way to try and seize his foothold in the world, yet Master was too smart. She must've sensed the danger with her divine powers!"
Samala beamed at the dragon telling the story. "What happened next!?"
"Fufufu, Master told her dragon to take her directly to the enemy! The dragon flapped her large, beautiful wings, while her master rode on back. They flew in a straight line right back to the capital."
"When the two of them got there, the demon's forces had already begun storming out of a church. Master said to me, 'you handle those small fry, and I will handle the demon.'"
Kurayami puffed up her chest. "Master looked so dashing in that moment. Her gorgeous white wings made me not want to look away, and her valiant figure made me gasp in awe. I wanted to stay there just to look at her, but I had a job to do. The small fry...The kingdom's princess needed protection."
"While the dragon was protecting the princesses, the master was fighting. The disgusting demon looked at the elf as prey in his arrogance, yet Master paid him no mind. She summoned a giant clock angel even bigger than this building! It was an angel that even the dragon would hesitate to fight against."
The crowd were awed by the prospect of a clock angel. Kurayami flapped her wings for dramatic effect, hovering in the air above the table. All of the villagers watched her with widened eyes.
"And so Master said to the enemy, 'your time is up, and you've run out of Hope. Any last words, Demon?'"
"In the demon's arrogance, he took her words as a bluff, but that was his last fatal mistake. Master commanded the clock to drag the demon into a thousand years of torment, and all of it happened in less than a second! The clock sentenced the demon to the abyss. And thus, the demon was no more, slain by the greatest woman in all of the lands!"
By the end of Kurayami's story, Hikari's cheeks were so red, she dared not lift her head. Yet, everyone could see the red tips of her ears.
Ayase even deigned to tease the poor elf. "A thousand years of torment! All evil is vanquished by her hands!"
Hikari turned to glare at the witch. "Stop it!"
The kids stared at the elf, and Samala cheered her on. "I want to see your white wings!"
"Me too!" Another kid shouted.
And then it was like a chorus of children who wanted to see the divine wings. Even Nona and Kai had joined the force of kids. Their army was too strong for Hikari's defenses.
She stood up from her chair reluctantly. "I will show you, but you can't tell anyone else. Also, you aren't allowed to touch them."
"Okay!"
The elven goddess sighed. Hikari wings sprouted from her back in an instant. The white and fluffy divine wings appeared, making her look even more divine. Their essence placated the room and produced a calming atmosphere. All who looked at them were enraptured, caught under the spell of majesty.
For mortals who gazed at them, it made them want to kneel and swear loyalty upon them. As if the wings were the signature of her stature.
Just as the atmosphere threatened to consume them, the wings vanished.
Darrin began muttering under his breath. "So, she was really a goddess?"
Hikari sighed and looked towards the dragon at fault.
"Don't look at me, Master. You told me to give them a story."
"I suppose so, but did you have to embellish it so much? Look at these people. I don't even think we'll be able to stay here any longer."
"Please wait," Sarrah said. "The kids will be so sad if you leave early. We've not had visitors in a while. We won't inquire anymore about your background, so can you please stay until tomorrow?"
"Fine," Hikari said. "However, in exchange, you have to tell me the story of this island."
Sarrah smiled at the goddess. "That's a simple task."

She began recounting the origins.
Some hundreds of years ago, the empire began a full swing sea operation. They erected cities along the coast and built ships to sail the oceans and map them. Each coastal city became a sea faring city. It was the Emperor at the time who believed capturing the sea would be the first step to the Empire's supremacy.
They began traveling from island to island, avoiding the most dangerous of areas. Each island that was found to be habitable, they started building cities there to import the island's goods. Fishing operations began in full swing, and the Empire built the Imperial Maritime Fishing Company.
It was at one of these islands where a strife would occur. Due to over fishing and taking the island's resources, eventually, there was a lack of food for the inhabitants. All of their goods were being shipped out, and there was very little for the peasants who actually fished the waters.
Many of them hated the status quo, and they hated the Empire who allowed this to happen. They sent petitions to their local leaders, but petitioning the Imperial government was a crime if not sanctioned by a Lord.
The protesters had neither a sanction nor a powerful backing. One by one, the Emperor began their executions. However, some of the protesters were lucky enough to escape.
They fled the big island with hand made rafts, drifting into the endless sea. Many of their brothers and sisters called them insane. Dying by the hands of an execution seemed a much better option than dying a slow and painful death on a floating raft, lacking food and water.
As the people on the raft sailed on open waters for days, they slowly began to lose their strength. They looked up to the gods, pleading for food and water. However, it was neither a god nor the Empire that saved them.
They were saved by the hands of mermaids who fed them fish and used their water magic to produce fresh water. The dying men and women were ushered to a livable island by the sea creatures.
"And thus, this village was born. The statue of those mermaids still stand at the center of this island."
Nona's eyes widened. "There are mermaids here? I thought they were a fairy tale."
The woman shook her head. "They're not a fairy tale, yet none of this generation or several of the previous ones have seen them. People have come and gone from our village, and some set out to look for our saviors. However, not a single person has been able to find them all this time."
"How can you be so sure they ever existed?" Hikari asked.
"The tales of explorers and adventurers running into mermaids are well documented. You need only look at the history in the Empire and realize it can be no coincidence. It was even said that they openly engaged in trading deep goods. I heard from a traveler much like yourselves that the Empire keeps a museum where one can still find a treasure of the mermaids."
Hikari sighed as Sarrah finished. I wonder if that story is true? Maybe there's a chance we will run into them?
Though, the elf doubted such an opportunity would come. She even accepted the possibility that the mermaids had gone extinct.
