Chapter 48: Introductions

Raven, riding on his horse, was making his way back to the inn.

Followed by a different farm worker, who was guiding the other two horses back to the specified location.

But on their way back, he saw two familiar faces walking toward them.

They were Pevon and Janet.

So engrossed in talking to each other that they didn’t even notice him riding a full horse in front of them.

’These blokes!’ He said, noticing the way they were talking and giggling, seemingly lost in their own world.

Pevon seemed to be making progress in his expedition.

Raven decided against calling them out, wanting to see just how close he would need to be for them to notice.

They slowly approached each other, and they weren’t even bothering to look up once to notice him.

And finally, they crossed each other, and they didn’t notice him or the 3 top grade Coursers.

Raven was in disbelief.

Had he made a bit too much progress?

"Yo!" He called out, and Pevon was the first to flick his head back. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

There was only one person with such a unique greeting.

"What!?" He gasped, his eyes incredulous.

"Pevon?" Janet was confused as she looked in the direction Pevon was looking.

And her eyes widened as well.

It was the golden-eyed guy she had known for a while, riding on a horse...

It was just such a bizarre sight.

"Where to?" Raven asked them, "Being so engrossed in each other?"

Both of them froze.

Cough! Cough!

Pevon coughed and stuttered, "W- We were going to get horses for ourselves."

Janet evaded her gaze, looking around agitatedly.

’It shouldn’t take long,’ Raven thought, a smirk forming on his face.

"Horses?" Raven asked, looking back at Pevon, "Well, choose one you like."

Only now did the duo finally look at the other two horses following him.

They had previously ignored it because horses weren’t really uncommon around these parts.

But now that they took a closer to them, they looked awfully similar to the one Raven was riding on.

"You can leave them here." Raven asked the farm worker while taking out a single Merchant coin from his pocket.

Around 10 Sol.

His eyes widened seeing an amount he would usually earn in 50 days in front of him.

"Thank you for your service."

Janet inched closer to the horses, caressing their trimmed fur, and patted them lightly, "These look expensive, Raven."

"They were a bargain, honestly," He replied honestly, "And these are the best of the bests."

"How much?" She asked flatly, her tone laced with suspicion.

"Que?"

"I don’t trust you with any analogy about money." Her reasoning was pretty straightforward and made insanely good sense.

Pevon nodded from behind, completely agreeing to it.

And Raven couldn’t even refute.

How were nobles lecturing a commoner about money?

"800 for all three."

Wheeze!

Pevon took a step back in surprise, and Janet took a deep breath.

This amount was an average knight’s annual salary.

"Wha-"

Janet was at a loss for words.

"I choose the black horse."

Not wanting to be present here anymore, he quickly grabbed the black horse and trotted it a few metres away.

He knew that Raven wouldn’t accept money, so why even bother pretending?

Janet’s gaze was scrutinizing, making Raven uncomfortable.

"Let’s just go," Raven said, turning around to circumvent her gaze, "We would be late."

Immediately boarding his red beauty, he trotted it away and joined Pevon.

For a few seconds, she stood there, staring at the horse.

But finally, she climbed it and joined them.

But she was a lot quieter this time.

Raven realized she wasn’t happy about this, but he couldn’t understand why she was still upset about it.

What’s done is done.

Strange girl.

And in the background, Pevon felt the urge to facepalm himself.

How was he so oblivious about something like this?

But this wasn’t the time to sit him down and explain, so he let it go.

For a while.

...

After a quick detour to the inn they were staying at for Raven to fetch his stuff, they trotted towards the main church.

The agreed meeting spot.

The atmosphere was kind of awkward, which was really confusing for Raven.

He just couldn’t understand her for the life of him.

He was trying.

He really was.

But it was hard.

Not living as a normal person for decades in either of his lives, it shaped him differently from normal people.

He was either too poor, like in his past life, or too rich in this one, to understand what was going on.

He gave Pevon a side eye, but he didn’t give him anything useful.

As they reached the Cathedral, they noticed the rest of the team was already there, waiting for their arrival.

The bronze-skinned Zuri Zahara and the red-haired Carroll Reeves.

Raven was pretty sure they were barely late, so the other side must have arrived pretty early.

Efficient.

Climbing off the horse, they covered a few metres on foot, with their

"Good afternoon, everybody," Everyone greeted each other the same.

Despite being on the same team, they were still strangers to each other.

So, there was still a bit of ice between them.

Raven was counting on the airhead to break the ice for them, but contrary to his expectations, another person came forward.

It was Zuri who started the conversation, "Let’s all get acquainted with each other, everyone."

"I will start," She had a polite, refreshing smile on her face, "My name is Zuri Zahara, and as you can guess, I hail from the Nerathi Principality."

Everyone nodded in understanding, and she finished it off with one additional piece of information, "And I was sponsored by Cardinal Zaire Okoye."

Since the original bunch of people was only the candidates chosen by the Cardinals themselves, everyone had a sponsor behind them.

So, it made sense to mention them.

The airhead jumped in immediately, "Glad to meet everyone, my name is Janet Lacassue, and I am a native of this city. My sponsor was Cardinal Spencer Wallace.

The next in line was Pevon, who began, "Pevon Fusco from Ivory Kingdom, I was sponsored by Cardinal Eve Marlowe."

The red-haired silent one was next, "Carroll Reeves, from Vividale Kingdom, and I was sponsored by Cardinal Edith Parker."

It was finally Raven’s turn.
