Chapter 92: The Tournament Begins

The tournament that was being held was more like a battle royale, where the participants were gathered into a single area and had to fight one another until only one remained.

Since Roxanna wanted some of them, she would probably choose five or six people and allow those who wished to give up midway through the tournament to leave the arena.

"My fellow beasts! I never imagined I would witness a tournament like this before I die!" Commander Marlow shouted as he stood in the center of the battlefield since he would be the one in charge of the tournament.

That was fair, because a tournament to choose a commander was usually only held after the former one had died. But since Commander Marlow could no longer carry out his duties properly, it was almost the same as if he were already gone.

"Since some of you joined the Vexaria Tribe less than a year ago, I’ll explain the rules of this tournament," Marlow said, his sharp gaze sweeping over each of Roxanna’s husbands.

"The rules are simple. First, if you lose consciousness, you’re out. Second, you may fight, but you are not allowed to kill. If your reason for joining this tournament is to kill someone, then leave now!"

His voice was firm and heavy, making it hard for anyone to look away. Roxanna watched everyone carefully, making sure none of them carried killing intent. If they did, things would turn ugly very quickly.

"Luan, why don’t you shift into your non-beast form?" Roxanna asked. "That way, we can talk more easily."

[If only Luan could talk in his beast form too, it would be easier,] Roxanna thought. [His cat fur is so soft. I want to touch it a little longer.]

"I can talk in this form." The black cat sitting on Roxanna’s lap suddenly lifted his head and looked at her with his round green eyes.

Roxanna blinked several times in surprise. "Why didn’t you say anything from the beginning?!"

"Because sometimes my words don’t sound very clear in this form," Luan replied calmly.

[Ah, yes... it doesn’t sound very clear, but I can still understand him,] Roxanna thought as she smiled. [But he sounds so cute, like his voice drops a few octaves in his cat form.]

In his human form, Luan had a baritone voice, not too deep, but not too high either. However, in his cat form, he sounded as if he had just inhaled helium, making his voice high and adorable.

[What a cute kitty.]

Luan’s ears twitched a few times, feeling annoyed because she suddenly called him by such a cute name. ’I’m a scary black cat!’ he thought.

"I can still understand you, don’t worry," Roxanna said at last. She patted his head a few times and decided not to mention how adorable his voice was, because she knew he would get angry. "Have you fought with the others before? I don’t remember it, but maybe you did it behind the back of the evil Roxanna."

Luan was silent for a moment before nodding. "Yes. Sometimes we fight, but it’s not because we argue or hate each other, alright? We’re just sparring to train our fighting skills."

[My husbands fight together to grow stronger? God, that’s cute!] Roxanna thought.

Luan wasn’t sure whether what he had just heard was real or not. Cute? How could sparring be considered cute? They never held back when sparring. The only reason they ever hesitated to hit one another in this tournament was because Roxanna was watching.

"I see..." Roxanna smiled. "So, Luan... who do you think will be the last one standing?"

Luan tilted his head to the side, thinking for a moment. "Who knows? Our strengths aren’t that different. But I’m not too sure either, because I believe we all hide our true strength."

Roxanna frowned. "Why?"

"In this world, you can’t trust others that easily." Luan looked at her with a serious gaze. "Especially when you’re all alone. You have to hide a weapon, so when someone attacks you, you still have something to fight back with."

What Luan said made a lot of sense, but for some reason, Roxanna felt sad hearing it. That kind of mindset was proof that they lived in constant fear of being betrayed by others.

Maybe it was also because they had been alone for so long, without any family or tribe that would truly protect them.

"But that was in the past," Luan said before Roxanna could sink deeper into sadness. "Right now, I think we can trust each other."

Roxanna immediately smiled when she heard that. "You’re right! I’ll make sure none of you ever feel alone again!"

Not long after that, she heard Commander Marlow shout, "The tournament begins!"

To make things fair, they were only allowed to fight in their non-beast forms. This rule was also meant to reduce the risk of accidental deaths, since their beast instincts could be hard to control when driven by adrenaline.

The moment the signal was given, the atmosphere on the battlefield changed.

The beasts who had been standing apart slowly spread out, each one choosing a direction without a word. No one rushed forward recklessly. Everyone knew this wasn’t just about strength, but it was about timing, awareness, and survival.

Roxanna’s eyes drifted toward her husbands. Just as Luan had said, their strength didn’t seem very different from one another. Still, the way each of them fought was clearly not the same.

Calen’s style was rough and brutal. He didn’t hesitate to throw punches or kick anyone who got too close. Honestly, he looked like a mad dog that had been let loose, moving on instinct and pure aggression.

Cyrus, surprisingly, fought in a similar way. The difference was that he preferred to grab his opponent, lift them up, and slam them hard onto the ground.

If he were able to grow wings on his back in his human form, Cyrus would probably carry his enemy into the sky and drop them from above.

"That must hurt so much..." Roxanna hissed under her breath every time she saw someone fall unconscious after being punched or thrown.

The fights were even more violent than the MMA matches Roxanna used to watch on television.

Roxanna swallowed and forced herself to keep watching.

The battlefield was a mess of movement and noise. Dust rose into the air with every step, and the ground shook each time someone was slammed down. Even though everyone was fighting in their human forms, the strength behind every blow was frightening.

Some participants tried to avoid direct fights, circling the field and waiting for the right moment. Others rushed in head-on, trusting their bodies and instincts. Shouts, grunts, and sharp breaths echoed around the arena.

One by one, people were knocked out.

After a while, Roxanna could see that Azul was truly elegant in every way. Not only did he have an elegant face, but his fighting skills also looked incredibly beautiful.

It was as if he were dancing on the battlefield.

Every movement Azul made was smooth and controlled. He didn’t rush, and he didn’t waste energy. His steps were light, his turns precise, and even when he struck, it looked effortless, almost gentle, despite the power behind it.

Unlike the others, Azul didn’t rely on raw strength. He watched his opponents closely, waited for the smallest opening, then moved at the perfect moment. A small shift of his shoulder, a quick twist of his wrist, a clean hit to the right spot, and the fight was already over.

Those who faced him often didn’t even understand what had happened until their vision went dark and their bodies collapsed.

"He looks so beautiful when he fights like that," Roxanna said softly.

Luan let out a small hiss. "He’s not even that impressive."

Roxanna laughed lightly. She could feel his jealousy without him saying it out loud. "I’m not saying that because I like him more. Each of you is different, and that’s what makes you special. You don’t have to be jealous."

Still... was it really possible not to feel jealous in a polygamous relationship? If it were her husbands who had many wives, Roxanna knew she would probably feel bitter all the time.

"I know," Luan muttered. "But I still can’t help it."

Roxanna didn’t argue. She simply reached out and gently stroked his head. Her eyes returned to the battlefield, this time settling on Zeir.

Even on the battlefield, he was quiet... and frightening.

Unlike the others who rushed toward their opponents, Zeir stood still at the edge of the battlefield, waiting for his opponent to come to him.

And every time they did, they didn’t stand a chance. Worse than that, Zeir only struck their head or neck, and his opponent collapsed, losing consciousness in an instant.

"How can he do that?!" Roxanna asked, full of curiosity.

Luan answered simply, "Zeir is an expert at finding pressure points on the body."

"He knows exactly where to strike to make someone lose consciousness without causing serious harm," Luan continued. "It only takes a second."
