Chapter 107: Chapter 91: Sealed Village, New Deceitful Object

When the voice sounded, Shen Bai, Huang Guang, and the others looked toward its source and saw a member of the Observatory dressed in black.

The young Observatory member smiled. "My name is Chen Tong. Don’t look at me like that. Every batch of new recruits gets a mission like this. Think of it as a little appetizer."

With that, Chen Tong tossed the scroll in his hand into the air, where it traced a graceful arc.

Chen Tong had thrown it toward Shen Bai, who raised a hand and caught the scroll.

"So, you’re Shen Bai. Lord Liu hasn’t used his special recruitment slot in years, but this time he used it on you. Everyone’s quite interested in you."

Shen Bai held the scroll without opening it. "I was just lucky," he said.

Chen Tong waved a dismissive hand. "It’s not about luck. Special recruitment is a symbol of strength. There’s no scheming or backstabbing in the Fenglin State Observatory; people are just curious. We’re colleagues now. I’m in the C Seventh Division. We can spar or exchange pointers sometime."

Just as Chen Tong said, he really had only come to deliver the mission.

’I thought this was going to be one of those classic scenes from a story, where some arrogant guy shows up just to get put in his place,’ Shen Bai mused. ’Looks like the Fenglin State Observatory isn’t what I imagined.’

A short while later, Chen Tong departed.

With Huang Guang and Kong Fang watching, Shen Bai opened the scroll.

The scroll was covered in densely packed characters, as small as ants, that detailed the mission.

Shen Bai gave it a quick glance before handing the scroll to Huang Guang and Kong Fang to study.

According to the scroll, there was a small village named Sealed Village in the western outskirts of Fenglin State.

Sealed Village had fertile land, and its people made a living through agriculture. Due to its proximity, many villagers would come to Fenglin State to trade their produce.

They grew all sorts of things, from grains to medicinal herbs.

Recently, however, a problem had arisen in Sealed Village.

The trouble began with the village’s Kitchen God Festival.

The Great Zhou Country was vast, with different customs in every region. Great Zhou encouraged this cultural diversity, and as long as these customs didn’t interfere with the nation’s governance, they were left alone.

The Kitchen God Festival was Sealed Village’s most important custom.

The villagers of Sealed Village enjoyed bountiful harvests, which they attributed to the Kitchen God they worshipped. Every year, they would perform a ritual sacrifice to honor the Kitchen God.

They would offer livestock, grain, fine cloth, and other valuables.

It was, by all accounts, the liveliest time of year in the village.

Nothing out of the ordinary had ever happened before, but this year was different.

Just recently, during the preparations for the Kitchen God Festival, offerings began to vanish before they could even be properly laid out.

After this happened more than ten times, the villagers reported it to the local Government Office.

The local County Magistrate’s Office dispatched constables to investigate. They sensed something unnatural at play.

They tried to solve the case themselves but found no leads, leaving them no choice but to request assistance from the Observatory.

"I’ve heard of the Kitchen God Festival," Huang Guang said, looking puzzled as he finished reading the scroll. "It’s a common custom. How could something like this happen?"

Kong Fang set the scroll aside. "Well, if there’s a problem, it’s our job to solve it. This is our first mission for the Observatory, after all."

Huang Guang nodded. "In that case, we should probably share our cultivation levels. We don’t want any problems with teamwork later."

They were all part of the Ding Twenty-Third Division and would be undertaking missions together from now on. It was perfectly normal to get a sense of each other’s abilities.

Kong Fang spoke first. "I specialize in the Tiger Form Fist, which channels the form of a tiger to strike my enemies. I’m currently at the Second Realm of the Three Treasures Realm."

As he spoke, Kong Fang struck a pose, looking just like a tiger stalking its prey.

An illusory image of a tiger appeared behind him, seeming both real and ethereal. Its bared fangs and brandished claws were enough to send a chill down one’s spine.

Huang Guang nodded. "Impressive. Brother Kong, your strength is definitely top-tier among the new recruits. Allow me to introduce myself. I specialize in the Phantom Saber. My style blurs the line between real and illusory, striking with unpredictable phantoms."

His long saber slid from its sheath. With a flourish from Huang Guang, the room filled with countless illusions, sprouting as thick and fast as bamboo shoots after a spring rain.

The afterimages of the blade were a mix of real and fake, making it impossible to defend against.

With their introductions complete, both men turned their gazes to Shen Bai, their eyes filled with curiosity.

To them, the most intriguing person was Shen Bai, the special recruit.

State Governor Liu Wufeng had never used his special recruitment privilege before; Shen Bai was the first. They were naturally curious about the extent of his abilities.

Seeing them both looking at him, Shen Bai smiled. "Brother Huang and Brother Kong are incredibly strong, both at the Second Realm of the Three Treasures Realm. I’m actually at the same level. My specialty... is Swordsmanship, I suppose."

’If I had to list all my abilities, it would take the time an incense stick takes to burn,’ Shen Bai thought. ’I have too many Divine Powers, and there’s no need to reveal them all.’

’When I face an enemy, if one power isn’t enough, I’ll just use another.’

As he spoke, Shen Bai drew his sword, Cold Moon.

As Cold Moon left its sheath, waves of cold light pulsed from its flashing blade.

"What a fine sword!" 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

Huang Guang and Kong Fang exclaimed in unison, their praise instinctive upon seeing Cold Moon.

In addition to its frosty gleam, a faint red light seemed to flow across the blade, a sure sign that it had tasted a great deal of blood.

Shen Bai circulated the Qi within his body.

The next moment, a layer of Blood Red Sword Qi enveloped the blade.

He didn’t unleash it, merely letting it sheathe the sword, contained but ready.

The Blood Red Sword Qi was like a crimson moon, yet strangely, it radiated a magnificent, righteous aura—the complete opposite of its color.

The moment the Sword Qi manifested, the entire room was filled with an indescribable pressure that made it difficult for Huang Guang and Kong Fang to breathe.

They could feel the terrifying power contained within the Sword Qi; it was like the weight of a mountain, suffocating them.

Beads of sweat broke out on their foreheads as their combat instincts kicked in, compelling them to subconsciously adopt defensive stances.
