Chapter 118: 118 An Open and Shameless Scheme

Faced with Nia’s hostility, Zayne said nothing. He simply stepped back outside the gate.

He had no desire to argue with someone who had just lost her father, and there was no point in doing so.

After seeing Astrachior off on his final journey, all he needed to do was honor Astrachior’s last request and protect Nia as best he could. That was enough.

Beyond that, he would have no further involvement with her.

And compared to Nia, there was clearly a bigger problem at this funeral.

Zayne’s gaze swept over the figures in the front row, those powerful people who had rushed here from all across Aurelion. He did not believe for a second that they were here simply to mourn Astrachior.

Howard was easy to deal with. These old foxes were the real trouble.

Soon, the ice coffin containing Astrachior’s body was carried out of the hall and prepared for burial at the Old Shipyard Port cemetery.

The coffin was placed inside the hearse. The black funeral car led the way, with mourners following behind on foot.

Soft sobbing could be heard from time to time, and even the air seemed soaked in sorrow.

Nia sat inside the hearse, looking at Astrachior lying quietly in the ice coffin as if asleep. Tears slid down her face without her noticing. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Suddenly, the hearse swerved sharply, fishtailing hard. Nia was thrown forward, her head smashing into the corner of the ice coffin. Bright red blood immediately seeped from her pale forehead.

"What happened? Why did you suddenly turn like that?"

Nia looked at the driver and demanded an answer.

"Miss Zora, someone’s blocking the road ahead," the driver said, pointing forward.

Several men dressed in black robes stood in the middle of the road, their faces hidden behind masks. Each of them held a weapon. Their intentions were clearly hostile.

"Who are these people?"

Nia frowned, unease rising in her chest.

"I don’t know. They suddenly appeared in front of the car. I reacted on instinct," the driver replied helplessly.

The hearse came to a slow stop, and the atmosphere instantly grew tense.

Nia jumped out of the vehicle and stared sharply at them.

"Who are you? Do you know whose car you’re blocking?"

"Of course we know. Inside that hearse is Astrachior," said the man wearing a ghost mask at the front, his voice cold.

"You know that and you still dare to block us?"

Rage flared across Nia’s face.

"Relax. We mean no harm. Astrachior’s death is suspicious. We just want to open the coffin and examine the cause of death," the ghost masked man said calmly.

"You dare! My father died from divine backlash caused by excessive divination. I know this very clearly!"

Blazing flames burst from Nia’s body, the surrounding space warping under the intense heat.

Being stopped in public and having her father’s coffin opened during his funeral was a humiliation. It meant Astrachior would not even be allowed peace in death. Nia would never allow that.

The gathered citizens of Old Shipyard Port were instantly enraged as well. Astrachior had been the city’s savior, someone who had done countless good deeds here. Now people were trying to cause trouble at his funeral. How could they accept that?

"I don’t care where you’re from. Get out of the way. Astrachior’s funeral is not a place for anyone to cause trouble!"

A burly man stepped forward, reaching out to shove the ghost masked man aside.

Slash.

A flash of white light cut through the air.

The burly man’s head flew off like a kicked ball, rolling more than ten meters down the street as blood splattered across the ground.

In the ghost masked man’s hand was a long blade.

The sudden scene froze everyone in place. Even Nia’s beautiful eyes widened in shock.

No one had expected him to dare kill someone so openly, right in front of everyone.

Many people screamed and fled in all directions. They respected Astrachior, yes, but very few were willing to die for him.

Only Nia took a deep breath, her expression heavy.

This was inside the city. A professional killing someone openly meant the Investigation Bureau should arrive soon to arrest him.

All she had to do was protect Astrachior’s body until they arrived. It should only take a few minutes.

"Move aside," the ghost masked man said coldly.

"Never!"

"Crimson Flame Sea!"

Nia clenched her teeth. She would never let anyone disturb her father’s rest.

In an instant, the air grew scorching hot, the temperature skyrocketing.

Brilliant red gold flames surged from Nia’s body, forming a vast sea of fire that stood between her and the ghost masked man like an impassable wall.

But her full power meant nothing to him.

The ghost masked man stopped suppressing his aura and stepped straight into the blazing flames. The red gold fire roared violently, yet it could not harm him in the slightest.

An indescribable fear rose in Nia’s eyes.

"You are... a level fifty professional?"

She was already level twenty two, and with an SSS rank fire mage class, her fire spells were anything but weak.

For him to walk freely through her flames meant his level was at least fifty.

In Old Shipyard Port, a level fifty professional was already at the very top. As long as they avoided a tiny handful of people, they could do whatever they wanted here.

"Relax. I won’t kill you. You’re Astrachior’s daughter. If you die, it would cause trouble."

As he spoke, the ghost masked man flipped his blade and struck Nia with the flat of it.

A tremendous force slammed into her, sending her flying into a nearby railing. Pain twisted her face.

"Stop. Do not go near my father’s coffin!"

Seeing the ghost masked man walking toward the ice coffin, Nia struggled to stand, but sharp pain tore through her chest and abdomen.

The blow had clearly shattered her ribs. She had completely lost the ability to get up.

She could only watch helplessly as the ghost masked man approached the coffin.

Why? Why had the Investigation Bureau still not arrived?

Where were they?

As if realizing something, Nia turned her head back.

Only then did she notice that many of the prominent figures who had been following the hearse were gone.

The city lord Tiger, the director of the Old Shipyard Port Investigation Bureau, and even many of the powerful figures who had stood in the front row earlier had vanished without a sound.

It was as if they had all agreed on this in advance.

A crushing fear wrapped tightly around Nia, sending chills through her entire body.

Only now did she understand.

The men blocking the road were nothing more than chess pieces.

What Nia never expected was that her father had only just passed away, and yet people already dared to scheme against her so openly and shamelessly.

The Investigation Bureau was clearly not coming.
