Chapter 407: Chapter 395 All things have their own laws of operation, from stars to elements, without exception!
Despite his efforts to understand, Anthony was baffled by the phenomenon unfolding before him; he could only speculate that the particles were moving so fast that they instantly penetrated the element, allowing them to pass through an area studded with positive and negative electrons without any interference.
Or perhaps, by sheer luck, these alpha particles managed to pass through the tiny gaps between atoms.
Anthony speculated thus, but in the next moment, his fantasies vanished, as a barely detectable speck lit up on the top of the circular detection screen.
This indicated that an alpha particle had been disturbed just as he had previously imagined and had deviated from its path…
“It seems my dispersed elemental model is the correct one,” a Grand Wizard said with considerable self-satisfaction.
Since electrons with opposite charges attract each other, and identical charges repel, he guessed that the electrons within an element are not tightly bound together but are instead scattered, paired up by their charges.
The array of council members present nodded in agreement, for a very dense, dazzling spot of light had formed in the area directly opposite the hole in the lead box.
Only a very few alpha particles were deflected elsewhere, proving that the interior of the element was indeed empty.
However, they quickly realized that this model was not entirely accurate, as some alpha particles, upon striking gold atoms, were deflected back by a hundred and eighty degrees, nearly retracing their original path.
The deflected particles were concentrated at the center of the atom, and their scattering was orderly.
The existing dozen or so atomic models were completely unable to explain this strange phenomenon.
A look of realization spread across Lynn’s face; the results of the experiment were within his expectations, signifying that the atomic structures of the two worlds were the same, and were not altered by the influence of magic power.
Vittorio, seated at the council table, had a solemn expression.
He quickly constructed a corresponding model in his mind based on the pattern of the fluorescent distribution and calculated the angle at which each particle was deflected in just a second or two!
“The center of the element must have a very small, yet powerfully strong nucleus.
It seems that only alpha particles that collide with this nucleus are reflected back, while others can pass through smoothly,” Vittorio suddenly remarked.
Anthony and the others immediately realized the implications; only this could explain the peculiar distribution of the scattered particles.
“Exactly, I call it the nucleus!” Lynn’s voice echoed in everyone’s ears at the same time.
“The nucleus?
The core of the atom?” the council members murmured, repeating the term.
“This is the elemental model I’ve constructed!” Lynn raised his hand, and several magic orbs appeared in his palm.
The largest orb was at the center, while the rest orbited around it at high speed.
“Isn’t this the depiction of a galaxy?” Aurora asked in surprise.
The nucleus was like the Sun, with electrons orbiting it like planets, and according to Lynn’s demonstration, these ‘electrons’ were also spinning.
It was practically a miniature galaxy!
“Indeed!” Lynn nodded in agreement.
Lacking quantum theory as a foundation, he was not in a hurry to present the more accurate electron cloud model, which was indeed too difficult to comprehend.
He opted instead for the easier-to-understand planetary orbit model to explain it all.
“Stars bind planets with their extraordinary mass and resultant gravity, so what binds these electrons to the atom?
Could it also be gravity?” Harrov asked, puzzled.
The trajectories from which the alpha particles were repelled did indeed seem to result from a repulsive force.
“The matter within the nucleus is positively charged, and the orbiting electrons are negatively charged, so they attract each other.
This attraction balances with the speed of the electrons themselves…
it is indeed somewhat similar to gravity,” Lynn explained as succinctly as possible.
Indeed, the probability cloud theory would more easily explain this phenomenon, but to do so, he would have to explain quantum theory first.
“However, this balance can be disrupted.
If enough energy is absorbed, these orbiting electrons will jump to other orbits…” Lynn continued, explaining that this principle was similar to gravity, where a planet in a state of equilibrium would deviate from its original orbit if suddenly accelerated.
Because the Magic Daily had been continuously spreading the word, the law of universal gravitation was widely known among wizards.
Even those uninterested in force field magic understood the three laws of celestial motion that formed orbits, so it wasn’t hard to grasp.
“Is this what energy levels in laser magic refer to?” Aurora murmured to herself.
Lynn had mentioned this concept when he was perfecting laser magic.
At the time, she had been very interested in the phenomenon of energy levels but hadn’t yet grasped the underlying principles.
It was only now that Lynn’s exposition on the internal structure of elements made her understand.
The five energy levels corresponded to the five orbits of the electrons around the nucleus; the more energy absorbed, the further out the orbiting electrons jumped.
The power of laser magic lies in its ability to directly target the essence of elements.
No wonder it was powerful enough to cut gold and jade or to slice a massive sail battleship in two, as easily as cutting through a sheet of paper.
“Why are there only five energy levels?
And what happens if these orbiting electrons absorb energy beyond the limit?” Aurora suddenly raised these questions, her curiosity piqued.
“Then they will break free from the nucleus’ control and become free electrons – this is the element’s plasma state!” Lynn said with a smile.
“It can be likened to a planet that suddenly gains an extraordinary speed and thus breaks free from the gravitational pull of a star, flying off into the vastness of the universe.”
“I see!” Aurora had an epiphany.
This planetary orbit model of the elements nearly perfectly explained the formation of plasma states, the principles of laser magic, and the scattering of alpha particles.
What’s more, it was aesthetically pleasing, remarkably regular, and perfectly matched the wizards’ conception of elements!
“This is a rigorous and excellent idea!” Harrov said in admiration, then added wistfully, “I had no idea the inside of an element could reveal a picture akin to that of the stars…”
Everything has its laws of movement, from the grand cosmos to the inner workings of elements, and this resemblance could well be a manifestation of the world’s laws at work!
Anthony, Adela, and the other wizards who had proposed models of elemental structure looked at the star orbital model in Lynn’s hands with sighs of resignation.
