Chapter 72: Chaos Ensued

The chaos ensued as the zombies grew in numbers from a secretly infected civilian.

Meanwhile, the soldiers near the area responded immediately, pushing forward as the first shots rang out across the tent.

Rifles came up in one motion.

"Contact! Multiple infected!" one of them shouted.

The first burst hit the girl that started it all, rounds striking her upper body and snapping her backward onto the ground. She stopped moving—but it didn’t matter anymore.

Behind her, the man she bit staggered forward, clutching his neck.

Then his body seized.

He dropped to one knee.

And then he stood back up.

"Shit—another one!" a soldier called out.

The line collapsed almost instantly.

Civilians ran in every direction, some screaming, others frozen in place as they tried to process what was happening right in front of them.

The soldiers tried to establish control, stepping forward, rifles tracking targets—but there was no clear separation anymore.

People were everywhere.

"Watch your fire! Civilians in the line!" the lead soldier ordered, trying to hold discipline.

But it was already too late.

The newly turned infected didn’t hesitate. The moment they got back on their feet, they lunged at the nearest person, dragging them down and biting deep before moving again.

Another burst of gunfire cut through the air, one of the soldiers dropping a target clean with a shot to the head.

But two more rose behind it.

"Headshots only!" someone shouted.

The soldiers adjusted, tightening their aim, but the crowd kept breaking their angles—people running across their sights, blocking shots, getting in the way.

"I can’t get a clear shot!" one of them said as a civilian nearly collided with him.

A scream tore through the left side.

Another person went down.

Bit.

Then another.

Within seconds, the number of infected doubled.

Then tripled.

"Fall back! Pull back!" the lead soldier ordered as they started stepping backward, trying to create space.

But the infected pushed forward just as fast.

One broke through the gap, sprinting low before slamming into a civilian near the edge of the tent.

"Move!" Sophia snapped, grabbing Aubrey’s arm and pulling her away.

Chandrika reacted at the same time, locking onto Glaiza and dragging her back with her as the situation behind them spiraled out of control.

Miguel grouped with them and ran towards wherever that was safe. Behind them, zombies were chasing them with a ferocious intent.

"Shit zombies!" Miguel cursed in a panicked tone.

"Look, get to the room!" Chandrika shouted as she pointed at one of the barracks. If they could get there, they could close the door and be safe.

They all rushed towards it and the zombies behind them were getting closer and closer.

Miguel knew that at their current pace, they wouldn’t get there in time.

He won’t make it.

His eyes flicked behind him.

The infected were closing fast—too fast. One of them leapt over a fallen civilian, landing hard and pushing forward without slowing. Another cut from the side, angling to intercept.

Miguel’s breathing turned sharp.

He looked at the door ahead.

Then at the distance.

Then, at Sophia.

It happened in a split second.

He reached out and grabbed her arm.

Hard.

"What—?" Sophia started, her balance breaking as she was yanked sideways.

Chandrika turned.

"Sophia—!"

Miguel didn’t hesitate as he shoved her.

Sophia’s body stumbled forward, her footing lost as she was thrown directly into the path behind them.

Right into the oncoming infected.

"NO—!"

She hit the ground hard, sliding across the dirt.

For a fraction of a second, there was silence—

Then the first infected reached her.

It lunged.

Sophia screamed as it crashed into her, its weight pinning her down as its jaws snapped forward.

"Sophia!"

The zombie that pinned her down bit her neck and ripped deep, blood spraying across the ground as Sophia’s scream cut short.

Chandrika froze for a split second.

Aubrey broke.

"SOPHIA!" she screamed, trying to run back—

Chandrika grabbed her hard, pulling her back with everything she had.

"Chandrika!" she shouted. "Help me!"

Glaiza stumbled beside them, eyes wide, face pale, still looking back as the infected swarmed over Sophia’s body.

"Inside!" he shouted.

Chandrika pushed Aubrey forward first, practically shoving her through the doorway.

"Go!" she said.

Aubrey stumbled inside, barely catching herself.

Glaiza followed, dragged in by Chandrika as she forced her through next.

Miguel stepped aside just long enough for them to pass—

Then immediately shoved the door closed the moment Chandrika crossed the threshold.

The impact slammed through the room.

He didn’t stop.

His hand shot to the lock, twisting it hard.

Click.

Then he grabbed the nearest metal chair and dragged it across the floor, the legs screeching loudly as he jammed it under the handle.

"Hold it!" he said, bracing the door with his weight.

A second later, something hard hit the other side.

The entire door rattled.

Aubrey flinched, backing away as her hands covered her mouth.

Glaiza pressed herself against the wall, shaking.

Chandrika turned immediately, grabbing another piece of furniture and dragging it over, reinforcing the barricade without a word.

Another impact slammed into the door.

But suddenly, it stopped as it detected another loud noises from outside, possibly from gunfire.

With that, they were safe.

"Why did you do it?" Chandrika asked in low but confrontational tone.

"Do what?" he replied.

"You pushed her," she said.

Aubrey looked up, her face wet with tears, eyes shaking with disbelief.

Glaiza slowly pushed herself off the wall, her grip tightening around her phone.

Miguel finally turned.

His expression wasn’t regret, not even a guilt. It was, irritation.

"I did what I had to," he said.

Aubrey snapped.

"What you had to?" she shouted, stepping forward. "You threw her to them!"

Miguel’s jaw tightened.

"And we’re alive because of it," he shot back. "You should be thanking me."

Chandrika stared at him.

"...Thank you?" she repeated quietly.

Miguel spread his hands slightly.

"You think we would’ve made it here without that?" he said. "Use your head. We were too slow. Someone had to take the hit."

Aubrey’s breathing broke.

"That was Sophia!" she yelled.

"Oh, careful now, if you shout, they’ll come here and I don’t think the door is going to hold. This military base is over, zombies are in the base and the soldiers out there couldn’t contain the situation. I am your only hope in this situation. So if you love your life so much, you’ll do whatever I want you to do."

"What do you mean?" Chandrika asked as she felt something was off from Miguel. He was getting bolder.

"I have never imagined this, three beautiful girls alone with me in this room. Sophia was her name right? She’s pretty but she has to be sacrificed for this moment."

"You’re crazy..." Aubrey said in disgust.

"Oh, I’ll get crazy with you three...yeah I’m going to do that."
