I Only Want To Kill-Chapter 149: Nightwraith
Blood drips out from the eye sockets of the floating head, its mouth open wide, and it lets out a shrieking, high-pitched scream that is too much to bear.
The scream creates a shockwave that pushes Blaze back a few meters. His shoe drags on the ground and creates burning black marks.
The soundwave does not have any force behind it, but Blaze can feel his stomach turn upside down. Every little thing that he has eaten this afternoon in the village climbs its way out of his mouth. But he resists it and prevents them from flying out.
Blaze runs to the side to get away from the soundwave, trying to find an opening to approach ’Evenlyn’. The woman chases the sound wave after him, keeping him at bay.
"Tch." Blaze clicks his tongue. His physical attributes are higher but still incomparable to when he activates the Lightning Ascension. Losing your most powerful trait, speed, really makes everything become much harder.
Blaze materializes Irony in his left hand, and while evading the soundwave, he wills the bullets into the gun’s cylinder.
The woman suddenly stops the soundwave attack and instead reaches its black tentacles forward at a blurry speed. At the tips of each tentacle are sharp, curved blades that have blood dripping on them.
Blaze holds the Twinblade with his right hand and spins it quickly, creating a temporary shield to deflect all the tentacles away. He pulls the trigger with his left hand.
The white, flaming bullets pierce through the air but are stopped by an invisible barrier that surrounds the woman.
"He he he he!" The woman lets out a hideous laugh. A field of darkness spreads out from behind her ears, creating a sphere of darkness around Blaze and her.
"Darkness?" Blaze mumbles.
The power is a bit different, but it is identical to the Moonlight Karambit’s Darkness. Blaze knows this power well. No ordinary light source is capable of illuminating inside its effective radius. But he has extraordinary light.
The Moonlight Twinblade disappears, and in its place, a demonic lantern with a yellow light. With one simple thought, Blaze uses ten guilty souls to fuel the Lantern’s light, activating its Soul Flare.
The Lantern’s soft yellow light explodes into an intense and bright light. A sphere of light covers Blaze and all the shadow was burned, vaporizing into black smoke.
Blaze can hear the scream of the woman in his ears. With it, he locates her position. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Blaze dashes forward, holding the bright Lantern with him. The shadow sphere has gutted out a path of light, no longer able to conceal the environment.
The woman is revealed under the light of souls.
"That... that is..."
Blaze fires Irony. All the bullets once again are stopped before hitting the woman. Blaze switches to the Moonlight Karambit. With one swift motion, he slices the knife onto his forearm, letting it eat his blood. The knife’s blade turns bright red.
Blaze never stops moving while attacking. He has made his way into melee range with the woman. Blaze slashes the invisible barrier that is holding the bullets. It shatters like glass, and Irony’s bullets shoot forward.
"Ahhhhhhhhh!"
’Evelyn’ screams in agony. The flaming bullets burn her tentacles like acid burning the flesh. It drills deep inside her body and breaks it down piece by piece.
Blaze, once again, switches his arsenal. The sphere of darkness is interrupted so he no longer needs the Lantern. He turns the Moonlight Karambit into the Twinblade again and splits it into the two short swords.
He holds the two curved swords with each of his hands and dashes forward, spinning his body at great speed. Blaze turns into a fidget spinner with a deathly blade on the side. He cuts through the woman like a lawn mower tidying up the garden. Her tentacles and fingernails break down into pieces.
This attack creates an opening directly to the head of the woman. Blaze jumps upward, joining the swords into one again, and executes a single downward strike from above.
The blades cut the face of ’Evelyn’ right in the middle, splitting it in two.
[Congratulations, you have slain a Nightwraith]
[You have received 500 experience points]
[You have received x1 Nightwraith’s Core, x20 Black Tentacles]
The woman turns into ashes and leaves behind a black core with a slight white glow outside. The rest are strips of long black fabric that are made out of questionable material.
The Moonlight Twinblade suddenly starts shaking uncontrollably, and it flies out from Blaze’s hand.
The Black Tentacles lift themselves up and wrap around the handle of the Twinblade, fusing with it and becoming one with the weapon.
[Congratulations, your Moonlight Karambit (Twinblade form) has absorbed x20 Black Tentacles]
[Your Moonlight Karambit (Twinblade form) has awakened a new Hidden Power]
[Night Silk: You can manipulate the blades by using black fabrics that are wrapping around its handle]
The Twinblade returns to Blaze, now with new black pieces of cloth with golden stripes. Blaze separates the blades and uses the Night Silk to throw one of the short swords away. Instead of flying aimlessly, Blaze can control its flight path, speed, and force. This type of control is limited to inside the length of the Night Silk.
Blaze then wraps both pieces of cloth around his two hands and spins. The short swords turn into two shooting stars that orbit around him, turning a nearby tree into planks.
Blaze stops mid-spin and recalls the Twinblade to his hand. With this new power, the range of this form greatly increases, and its attacks are going to be hard to predict. He stashes the new Core into the Inventory, right before other people appear.
People of the village finally get hold of the noises. Cavanaugh leads in the front with his shotgun while a few men follow behind him.
"What happened, Jake?" Cavanaugh says.
"A Wretched, that’s all. A beautiful woman. She tries to seduce me, but I handled her."
"Beautiful woman?" Did she say her name is Evelyn?"
"That’s right. How did you know?"
Cavanaugh sighs and racks his shotgun, ejecting the shell inside the chamber. He then turns to the villagers behind him.
"Alright, boys. Go home. Our chosen one killed the bitch. It is not necessary to be here anymore.
You take care of the first watch, yeah, Kevin? Then swap it around like usual, got it?"
"Alright, Mr. Cavanaugh."
"We got it, Mr. Cavanaugh."
The men scatter and go back to their station. Wretched souls can attack their settlement at any time, so there is always the need to have at least someone on the watch. They built a dedicated watchtower out of wood for these kinds of tasks. The towers are crude and poorly made, but they do the job.
"Walk with me, son." Cavanaugh uses the shotgun to point at Blaze.
He shrugs and takes a walk with Cavanaugh. It seems that he is taking a patrol around the village, making sure everything is alright.
"You made quick work of that wretched, huh?" We call her the siren. She always shows up when we have a newcomer. Especially handsome young men."
Cavanaugh walks over to a lantern and drops some white powder into its light. The light shines brighter and reaches farther than before.
"What are those?"
"Salt. Oh, you mean these lanterns? It is a special kind of fruit that grows here. It absorbs sunlight and exudes it out like a reflective material."
"It looks like a pumpkin."
Cavanaugh bursts out laughing.
"Yeah. You are probably right. There are a lot of things that resemble what we have in the real world. But they are slightly different.
And you. I have some questions about you. You must be very powerful outside, yeah?"
"Why do you say so?" Blaze shares a gentle, knowing smile.
"Evelyn is one hard bitch, son. It is not easy to kill it. We tried many times. We failed all the times. If you can kill her in here, I suspect you must be at least an S-rank Awakened."
Blaze doesn’t answer, only smiles. He is an S-rank Awakened. He has two S-rank powers, actually. But now he can’t even use any of them. He didn’t have a chance to test the new full power of Thunder Ascended God yet.
"So it’s true." Cavanaugh draws an answer from Blaze’s silence, "Maybe you will be different." Maybe you can get out of this place after all.
Still want to go to the Undercity?"
"Of course, it is the only way out."
"Alright. To enter the Undercity, you need to get behind a vault door. To open that door, you need a special key.
This key does not reside with me but somewhere else. Come to me in the morning, and I’ll give you instructions on how to get it."
Blaze nods. He follows Cavanaugh for another round of patrol. Everyone in the village has entered their homes and locked the door tight. They keep their light on as a signal that their house is safe. According to Cavanaugh, the Wretched has a special passive power that extinguishes any light nearby, so light is a reliable way to identify them.
After the patrol, Blaze ends up on Cavanaugh’s hay bed and falls asleep.
