Chapter 42: Main Quest

His eyes drifted towards Synthia, and his voice came low but polite. "No, senior. I slept comfortably."

Synthia gave him a bright smile as she grabbed him by his hand and started walking towards the hall.

Leon gave one last look at Amon, who was still on the ground, lying down as he sobbed.

When they both reached the hall, Max was sitting on a couch with a cup of tea remained under his hand.

His lips were touching the head of the cup as he took a small sip.

But before he could finish his tea, Synthia rushed to him as she took Leon with her too.

When she reached near him, she looked him in the eyes and said. "Did you meet our newbie, Senior Max?"

He gave a small nod as he took another sip of his tea.

But before they could converse more, loud clanking noises started to come from the outside, as if some soldiers were in revolt.

"They’re at it again," Max said, keeping his cup down on the side table.

Leon’s eyebrow twitched slightly, and he scratched his chin lightly as his voice came low, tone curious. "At it again? What do you mean by that?" He asked.

Max’s gaze lifted from his cup to Leon’s face, and his voice came firm. "The current city is captured by the Mayor of City Stoneheart."

He took a small pause and then continued. "The knights of this city are revolting against them to take the city back. The normal citizens are taking part in the revolt, too."

Leon hummed slightly. "Hmm, so why don’t you and Amon help them take the city back?" He asked, curiosity buried inside his tone.

"Because we’re mages, we don’t help randoms when it doesn’t benefit us," Max said as he started walking towards his room.

’I need to find out more about this incident.’

Synthia’s voice came out loud and cheerful. "Newbie, why are you so invested in normal affairs?" She asked.

Leon just shook his head and shrugged slightly. "I don’t know about it either."

’For now, I’ll dodge all the questions which she’ll ask me, and leave the tower to find out more about this thing.’

After talking and chatting with Synthia for a while, she finally went to bed for a small nap.

Leon was sitting next to her as he muttered under his breath. "Now it’s my time to leave the tower."

He slowly made his way outside the tower as he went back to the centre of the city.

His gaze moved from one corner of the city to the other. He noticed that the shops which had a bunch of customers crowding in front of them were now closed.

The streets were silent as if the town had just been abandoned by everyone. There was no kind of sound inside the city.

"It’s strange... I feel like I’m back in 2020." He muttered under his breath.

A sudden pop-up of a system panel appeared in front of his eyes, shimmering with bright blue light.

His eyes widened slightly as he read the entries, which were on the panel.

His hand raised to chin level as he scratched it. "The Main Quest?"

A smirk crept up on the corner of his lips as he extended his finger and tapped the system panel.

The moment his choice got enlisted into the system, a bright light appeared from the panel and caught his body, circling him completely.

His body vanished from the spot where he had been standing moments ago, leaving behind only a scattering of small white pixels that slowly faded into nothingness.

Leon’s body materialized in a vast plaza. Tents were all over the field in orderly rows, while a few armed soldiers stood guard at their front, unmoving and vigilant.

At the centre of the field, a massive flag towered above everything else. Its fabric was snapping in the air, hovering and waving slightly with the help of the low breeze.

An unmistakable symbol of a sword was in the centre of the flag.

Leon’s eyes scanned through the whole field. ’So this is the area where the Sword Knights are?’

A deep but sharp voice rang inside Leon’s ears. "Hey, you,"

He turned his gaze towards the place where the sound had just come from.

He noticed that a knight was walking towards him. He had a tall, well-built physique, his hair was dark and tied behind the back of his head, and a sword was tucked next to his waist.

The knight stopped when he reached in front of Leon. His voice came once again, sharp and with authority buried in its tone. "Are you a mercenary?" He asked, arms crossed next to his chest.

Leon gave him a quick nod, his eyes looking straight at the man’s face.

"Yes, I just joined today." He said.

’So I’m a mercenary in this quest? I’ll play along for the sake of my main quest.’

That man scanned Leon from top to bottom, looking at his build.

His facial expression twisted, disappointment seeping into his features as he looked down at Leon.

"You don’t seem too strong," he paused as he leaned towards Leon’s face, a disgusting smile curling up on his lips as he continued. "Did you come here through someone? Favour, eh?" He said, trying to mock him.
