I Refused To Be Reincarnated-Chapter 619: Whispers of Ruin
Chapter 619: Whispers of Ruin
An icy shudder ran down Adam’s spine. The cleaver only confirmed what he had seen: the grotesque features of a humanoid—no, a demon’s protruding fangs, ashen skin, and sharp claws. And now, this stupid Ye Feng broke its seals.
Thick miasma already seeped from the crackling cocoon, enveloping him, and soon insidious whispers would begin to poison everyone’s minds...
The demonic cleaver chuckled, its voice dripping with mockery.
"Why would it whisper? I needed a wielder and someone to hide me. It doesn’t. Hahaha. You’ve been a useful tool, but I guess that’s where we part ways."
Horrified, Adam swung his arm, spatial mana splitting the air before him. Through the dark cracks, the outline of the forest’s lush canopy and the figures of the inner disciples he had marked appeared.
The joyous fools still filled their spatial rings with precious fruits and minerals when all hell would soon break loose. After all, there could only be one reason for that leech of a weapon to say they’d part ways: everyone would die, him included.
He couldn’t waste a second. Therefore, he channelled his mana to encase all the sprawled cultivators in an ethereal bubble that hovered toward him.
They shuddered, their mouths opening in protest, but he thundered before they could and ignored them afterwards.
"Protect these unreasonable fools, Misha. We need to buy time until the blessed land kicks us out!"
"I’m not leaving you." She rushed behind him, baring her teeth and growling at the cocoon. "We’ll fight whatever comes out together."
Adam’s veins throbbed on his forehead. Time wasn’t for explanations, but he still hugged Misha and whispered. "I can’t let them die. I’m not fighting either, just buying everyone time. So, please, protect them in my stead."
She shuddered in his embrace, her eyes darting between the bubbles crossing the folded space and Adam. Why should they care about these bastards? Ye Feng brought this upon themselves with his false righteousness and self-entitlement, and they obeyed him.
She glared at the cocoon, gritting her teeth—how she wished to rip that man’s throat for putting Adam in danger. But she also remembered Adam’s fond talks about the earthlings’ unbelievable resistance against swarms of monstrous beasts and how his eyes sparkled when he described their unity even in their last moments.
She bit her quivering lip, knowing he cared too much to abandon them. "Promise me you’ll return."
"I still have too much to discover to die." A hollow chuckle, sounding more worried than confident, escaped his lips as he waved his hand. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
An ethereal map displaying a few red dots forming before Misha. "Some of the fools I marked are with us. Gather the others, retrieve their spatial rings, and thank them for the free labour."
She pulled back with a slow nod, scrutinising him as she walked backwards to the folded space. "I’ll wait for you... be safe."
As Adam raised a shaky thumb, Xie Lian watched him as her bubble passed by. No matter why the other disciples seemed to hate him, after witnessing his prowess and temperament, she knew they were illogical.
In fact, if a single direct disciple was as powerful as him, he would have painted the palace’s walls in his concurrent sects’ blood to claim the rewards. Yet, Adam went as far as to hide to avoid conflict. Now she could clearly see it: he let his actions talk and didn’t bother explaining the obvious.
She took a deep breath before crossing to the forest, her purple eyes sparkling. "Are you sure you’re not a hero?"
Her words made Adam stumble. His face distorted as he spat in disgust. "Trust me, I’ll survive this just to kill you if you call me a hero again!"
"Alright, alright." She chuckled playfully before her lips twisted. "I don’t know what’s happening, but you must return, or I’ll carve ’hero’ on your grave."
Watching her pass through the folded space, he snorted despite his warming chest. He wouldn’t die, never.
"That’s your wishful thinking, boy. But I guess your liar’s brain still works and you spared them from being demonified... temporarily, that is. There is no escaping. Only ruin and raging fires await you all. This realm is finished! Hahaha!"
The cleaver’s infuriating whispers echoed as he shut the space tight behind the last bubble.
However, it exploded, a figure rushing at him in a dance of silver hair.
"You!" Xian Yunxu pointed a trembling finger at him, her eyes blurring. "You’re not the magus!"
A deep furrow creased Adam’s brows as he held his fist from latching at her face in rage. "Leave, idiot. I told you all I’m not, but you never listened."
She shook her head, her eyes sparkling. "Your dislike for heroic praises reminds me of Prometheus! The magus could never know about that. Something’s wrong, and I’m not leaving before I get to the bottom of this."
"I have no time to entertain your curiosity."
With a roar, he channeled his mana in his palm.
Frost crept onto the walls, painting them a reflective pale blue. Vapor escaped their blueing lips as a splashing torrent raged around his palm.
It expanded into a triangular head crowned with spiralled and twisting horns. Two frosty eyes formed amidst the diamond-shaped scales before sharp fangs dripping purple putrid liquids erupted from its open mouth.
Finally, the torrent elongated, icy blades rotating around its long body in a treating blur that filled the room with grinding noises.
"Hehehe. Fight fire with water?" The cleaver sneered mockingly. "Do you believe that weak thing could stop one of my strikes?"
Dread’s icy fingers wrapped around Adam’s heart. A strike on the cleaver’s level... A tier nine strike?! There was no way to escape or even fight back something stronger than the magus. He had to stop it from whatever it was doing in the fiery cocoon.
As despair encroached on his heart, a sudden sensation—a warm palm on his shoulder—made him curse.
"Wait. We’ll figure things out with Ye Feng once he’s out of that thing."
"I told you to leave! He unsealed a demon, the same one who almost destroyed the cultivation realm fifty thousand years ago, and cursed this blessed land. The Ye Fen you knew is already gone."
Xian Yunxu’s palm trembled on his shoulder, blood draining from her face and her curiosity melting under the cocoon’s crackling. A creature much worse than the mages they hated so much, one of ruin, chaos, and violence—one powerful enough to end the void emperor’s life.
"N-No..." She clutched her head, her legs trembling. "He planned it all. H-He..." Her voice caught in her throat, old rumors resurfacing in her mind. "He knew which trials were easiest, and some said he was born in a demonic cult. We thought they were jealous of his overwhelming strength, but they were true! Oh my god, how blind have I been?"
Adam clenched his jaw, a rush of pure rage boiling in his veins. Those bastards tried to kill him because of mere suspicions when he was a baby but failed to see the enemy smiling at them daily.
Now Ye Feng’s suspicious ranking and horrible speed made much more sense: he melded demonic energy with his Qi to empower himself in short bursts, all while remaining hidden. But the time wasn’t for revelations.
He clenched his fist and punched.
ROAR
The water and frost dragon roared its conjurer’s unspoken rage. In a magnificent yet appalling blur, it charged like a missile aiming to eradicate its opponent.
Claws glinted, gripping the fire as if solid while putrid liquid dripped onto the flame in a cacophony of poisonous sizzles. The rotating blades clashed against the fire, dissipating it and reforming the moment they melted before its open maw snapped where the head should have been.
Before Adam could hope for success, the cleaver’s grating laughter thundered in his mind.
"Hahaha! Your struggles are amusing, aren’t they? Or do you think you can succeed where the emperor failed? Behold the power of the third artifact of the demon realm." Its voice chilled. "Andras’ symbiotic puppet!"
