Chapter 636: Whispers of Life, Roars of Relief

"N-No..." Xu Fei’s legs buckled, his knees crashing against leaves echoing in the valley.

The confident boy and his lively sister died? How could it happen? Had he not given his words to his martial brother that he’d bring them back safely?

No! He wouldn’t trust those disciples before he saw their corpses. He couldn’t accept it! Not when they brought joy and relief to Shen Wu!

Memories of the time he, Shen, and Yun had been ambushed resurfaced, causing his old back to tremble and his eyes to redden. Was it another scheme from those fools who had targeted them years ago? Couldn’t they let them live their twilight years raising disciples in peace?

His fingers dug into the ground as he rose under the sect leaders’ dissatisfied glares.

Tianlong waved his hand, an icy snort escaping his lips. "Stand back before you humiliate me further, elder Xu Fei."

However, Xu Fei’s lips snapped into a tight line, his nose scrunching in hate. "I obeyed when we fell lost our futures because of the other elder’s schemes. Not this time!" He raised his broad axe, the edges glinting the same sheen as his eyes. "I’m retrieving their bodies. Kill me if you disagree!"

A tense silence engulfed the valley, everyone bewildered by his disrespect. But after bewilderment came deep frowns, then narrowed eyes. What gave a mere soul transformation realm elder the courage to speak such nonsense before five sect leaders and dozens of core elders?

As the Jin Long elders cursed Xu Fei and Tianlong’s hand wrapped around his blade, Xian Yunxu slapped her fist against her palm.

The noise drew everyone’s attention as she bowed. "This completes my recounting of the events. One last warning—don’t unseal the blessed land. You’d exchange the resources it holds against rivers of blood and oceans of rampaging fires before you can taste them."

Then, she turned to Tianlong and bowed again. "Like sect leader Yan Fei, elder Xu Fei is shaken but doesn’t mean harm. Let me handle his case."

A pensive frown creased Tianlong’s brows as his fingers loosened. Her disciple’s words made sense, and anyone with a heart would understand an old man’s grief. Softness it is this time.

With a nod, he waved his hand. "Bind him in the disciplinary building. I’ll think about his punishment for making me lose face in public later."

Without wasting a second, Xian Yunxu charged at Xu Fei, who swung his battleaxe with a roar. "I won’t step back before I see their bodies!"

However, his rage melted as the surrounding space distorted with Xian Yunxu’s evasive passage. Instead of a counter-strike, he heard a soft, genuine whisper that flipped his world upside down. "They’re alive. Follow me before you ruin everything."

His axe slammed down, cleaving the ground open as he clutched his drumming chest. Alive! His breath grew ragged, and he closed his eyes to hide the tears welling up.

Then, he lowered his face, coughing to mask his quivering lips as Xian Yunxu snorted loud enough for everyone to hear.

"I’m sure our leader will overlook your light transgression if you follow me obediently and repent, elder."

Without waiting for an answer, she hurled her fist, folding space right behind him before she nudged him on the other side and followed.

The familiar sect’s mission hall met his eyes once he reopened them. With the movement, his tears finally trailed down as he sobbed in relief. "Please tell me you weren’t lying, Yunxu."

"They will suspect something if I take too long. Bring me to Shen Wu if you want me to explain what happened." A soft smile curled her lips. "But no, I didn’t lie."

"Follow me. He’s too weak to move, so he must be inside." Xu Fei tore his door from its hinges as he stormed inside his house.

In the living room, he found Mei Lan and Shen Wu, both wide-eyed at the forceful intrusion.

Upon recognising him, Shen Wu pushed himself from his reclining chair. Worry creased his brows, and his voice cracked as he didn’t see his disciples. Surely, nothing could have happened to them. "Why the rush, brother? Did..."

Dread’s icy fingers wrapped around his heart, and his breath caught in his throat as he saw Xian Yunxu follow. Instantly, he knew she had uncovered the truth about his disciples’ identity.

He sighed, shaking his head. "Xu Fei, Yun, and Mei Lan know nothing. I alone am guilty."

Against his expectations, Xian Yunxu placed a finger over her lips and hissed.

"SHHH! Keep it that way. I’m here to tell you Adam and Misha are fine. Keep what I’m about to tell you sealed if you care about them." She let her words linger, her eyes narrowed solemnly to emphasise the command.

After seeing Shen Wu nod in confusion, she continued. "Long story short, someone stupid unsealed a demonic artifact more powerful than Tianlong. Adam saved us all by defeating it but remained in the blessed land to enjoy its riches. We altered the story to cover for him. Officially, he and Misha are dead, and the artifact is still a threat."

"What?!" Shen Wu’s and Xu Fei’s jaws dropped.

Adam defeated a demonic artifact stronger than the sect leader? It was just too unbelievable, even if they knew he hid his strength.

But Xian Yunxu didn’t give them time to recover. "I passed the message. Elder Xu Fei, chain yourself in the disciplinary building." Without gazing back, she folded space again and returned to the valley.

Left alone, Xu Fei and Shen Wu exchanged a relieved glance before Xu Fei exploded into laughter.

"These kids! Hahaha! They don’t even need a sect anymore with this blessed land. I bet they’re already learning that sun-grade technique they wanted so much!"

Shen Wu returned the boisterous laughter, delighted tears rolling down his cheeks. "It’s better that way. I didn’t want to tell him, but that rascal had no chance to learn from the sect leader even if he won the competition."

Xu Fei’s brows rose slightly. "Why?"
