Chapter 28: 28:Is this how it starts

The prince had that smug smile he always had whenever he got news faster than Atheline.

"He awakened his Aether mid-battle during training, impressive, I tell you. I thought he was a mere body enhancer since he wielded a sword pretty well and could control his body well but he surprised me, I had never seen anything like that."

Atheline rolled his eyes inwardly.

’Of course you haven’t he’s the protagonist, they’re always late somehow, the villainess is coming of course he has to start growing stronger.’

"What Aether core did he awaken?" He asked curiously.

Solaris leaned closer to him and whispered."Light Aether, I couldn’t believe myself there hasn’t been anyone who can wield it except for the first high elf saintess and that was more than five hundred thousand years ago!"

’Of course it has to be that’

Atheline thought in shock. Light Aether was the rarest of any Aether core and there had only been two people who had wielded it.

The emergence of a light Aether manipulator meant the coming of a disaster.

"So what do you plan to do about it?" He asked.

Atheline had his eyes on the protagonist but it seems the crown had already noticed him.

’I’ve got to adjust my plans a little ’

"I plan on presenting him to Father today."

Atheline nodded.

’As expected’

"Thats good to hear your highness but I should be leaving soon."

The prince nodded and waved him off. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

"I know, I just wanted to tell you about my discovery. Regarding tomorrow’s envoy, could you check if all their accommodations are ready, especially for their queen, who will be staying in the eastern wing of the palace? Ensure they receive the best treatment. "

Atheline nodded and stood up.

"Yes your highness..," he turned to leave but he hesitated and turned to look at him," I’ve finished all the work for today and tomorrow your highness. As per his majesty’s order you’ll have to keep an eye on Elydrah tonight so that he doesn’t attempt to run away or embarrass us."

The prince groaned loudly.

’Yeah, I get it. That man is a handful’

"Really, I thought his family would be responsible for that, or," he pointed to Atheline, "...you, weren’t you the one tasked at first?"

Atheline chuckled.

"I have too much work your highness to go around babysitting today."

....

The day went on faster than Atheline had expected and the next day came knocking with vengeance Atheline was not prepared for.

Atheline stood by the palace entrance waiting for his companions. Palace guards were stationed around him each of them radiating tension that carried through the air.

"Where are you?" He muttered to himself.

"Is something the matter young lord?" The palace head guard, Vibran Delcary, asked him.

The man didn’t look his part at all. White hair just like Athelines and a face that bordered on feminine but what hid underneath was pure ruthlessness.

He had been the one who taught Atheline the best way to torture and kill whenever he came to the palace. An SS-ranked fire mage, almost the same age as his father.

"No, it’s just that the prince seems to be running late which is unusual," he conceded.

"He must have been held back by...oh look there he is and he seems to have brought the new rising talent. "

Atheline’s gaze caught Solaris the moment he appeared from behind the flowers but his eyes widened the moment he saw who was behind him.

Caius?

’What the hell is the protagonist doing here?’

Atheline managed to keep his confusion in check as he tried to figure out how Caius was fitting into everything, and then it came to him.

’The novel, is this how it goes? His first contact with the dark elves. Thank goodness, if it’s following the normal trajectory, I don’t think I’ve caused any butterfly effect’

Atheline bowed showing his respect to the prince since they had an audience.

"Good morning your highness?"

Solaris nodded.

"Good morning Atheline," he nodded towards the head guards," Sir Vibran, it’s been a while. "

Sir Vibran laughed.

"You’ve been too busy to visit your highness."

"I suppose you’re right."

"Young lord?" Caius said after the prince finished speaking his surprise palpable as he looked at Atheline.

"Nice to meet you again Caius how have you been?" Atheline smiled.

"You two know each other," the prince asked while glancing between them.

Atheline nodded.

"Yes, we met once and got somewhat acquainted."

Caius nodded.

"Atheline you sneaky little bastard, you knew who I was talking about yesterday right?"

Atheline shrugged.

"They’re here," Sir Vibran whispered halting the oncoming squabble.

Outside the palace gates, the air shifted then started to morph, a black hole appeared at the centre of the disturbance and two beasts stepped out followed by a carriage.

"Those look ominous," the prince said under his breath.

The group couldn’t teleport into the palace since there was an ancient barrier that surrounded the palace that prevented anyone from easily getting to the world tree.

The gates were opened and the beast pulled their carriages towards the palace entrance. The beasts were nothing he had ever seen before but he had read about them.

Salaimer. That was what they were called. They looked like huge crocodiles but their skin was made of cracked black scales that had red lines running through it to show their affinity with fire.

They were believed to be descendants of fire dragons because of how large they were.

The carriage came to a stop beside them and the drivers each moved to open the door.

Nine dark elves stepped out, three from each carriage.

Atheline straightened his posture, letting his gaze sweep over the visitors.

The envoy leader, taller than the others carried a long spear that glimmered under the sunlight. A scar ran across his face cutting through his upper lip down to his cheek.

Beside him was a woman who looked so out of place among the group of clear warriors. She had white flowing hair and a face that seemed soft among the usual dark elf sharp features.

Two guards flunked the front as they moved forward their eyes subley studying their surroundings. The remaining walked behind silently but Atheline knew from their postures that they were also some sort of nobility.

The prince stepped forward, nodding slightly.

"Welcome to our lands. We are honoured that you would join us in this union."

The leader extended his spear slightly as Aether formed around the spear. The prince followed, his robes glimmering at the helm.

A show of respect and acknowledgement between the two. The prince gestured to the main hall where they were to meet the king.

"Please allow us to escort you to the grand hall."

"Thank you, young prince," the man said nodding.

The prince took the lead with the man beside him. Atheline walked at the back of the group as he kept his eyes on the new visitors.
