I Reincarnated as the World's Worst Healer-Chapter 53: Saving My Kidnappers (1)
A dull thud echoed across the battlefield, it was the metal of Ebony’s shield striking the ground after severing Luther’s head.
The blonde girl, seeing what she had done, could not help but feel disgust, not toward the head rolling across the dirt, but toward herself.
She had taken lives in that world before, but not someone intelligent, someone who still had a life ahead of him.
However a cry of pain stole her attention, it was the leader of the hunters, bleeding out on the ground several meters away from Ebony.
"(He was a snake that bit too many people... I had to do it... I just hope he doesn’t have friends like the damn bastard he was)"
Ebony thought as she flicked her shield to the side, cleaning the blood from it.
"Well done, that bastard was too dangerous... Thank the gods we’re alive," Lucian said as he approached his friend.
Despite the pain in his body, the green-haired elf noticed the sadness in Ebony’s eyes, so with a faint smile he tried to comfort her.
"You’re really good with that shield..."
Ebony looked at Lucian, it was obvious to her that he was trying to console her, and a brief smile slipped from her lips.
Both of them moved toward the wounded, first to the twin hunters who had helped them in their fight against the dark elf.
One of them struggled to stay awake, blood still flowing from the wound where Lucian’s silver sword remained lodged, the very blade their common enemy had used to try to kill them.
"The sword is piercing his lung... It’s better not to remove it for now," Ebony said, analyzing the situation.
However the blonde girl was unable to heal anyone, despite her role and her medical studies in her previous life, she was incapable of saving the lives of those two boys who had given their bodies to win the battle.
The other twin writhed in pain from the poison inside him, she tried to convince herself that those two boys were her enemies, so she could hate them and somehow manage to heal them.
"Heal!" Ebony shouted as she pointed her open palms toward the wound opened by the silver sword.
But it was useless, no magic manifested, nothing changed, the boy still had a punctured lung and a grave in the earth waiting for him.
"Easy... You’re probably exhausted, don’t push yourself," Lucian said, placing a hand on his friend’s shoulder.
No one could know that she was incapable of healing others, because the more they knew about her life and abilities, the more obvious it would become that she was a Visitor in that world, a soul inside someone else’s body.
The hunters, much older than the teenage twins, stepped forward and placed their healing pelts over the wound, beginning to emit spiritual energy as they tried to heal the next generation.
However despite all their effort, the spiritual energy they had left was very little, and Kaly, the leader of the hunters, was still agonizing on the ground, being treated with the last of her people’s strength.
Until suddenly, after a short cough, the leader spoke in a calm and calculating voice.
"Stop wasting your time... Go save those kids..."
The hunters who were treating her stopped, both looking at each other as if silently arguing.
"It’s obvious my condition is critical... I don’t have to be a damn support to understand that... So stop screwing around and save those boys..." Kaly said coldly, enduring the pain of her broken bones.
Then she grabbed the pelts resting over her dying body and threw them toward where the twins lay.
The hunters looked shaken, but after a few moments of silence they rose almost in unison and went to help their young promises.
Ebony stepped away from the twins as the hunters arrived with their pelts to assist them.
The blonde girl felt guilty and useless, so she distanced herself from the group for a moment.
"(They spent too much spiritual energy healing me... They might not have enough left to save him...)"
Ebony thought as she tucked her blonde hair behind her ears until Lucian approached her.
The pair looked at each other, both knowing they should leave as soon as possible, since they had already lost valuable travel time.
"(At the end of the day they’re just strangers who don’t even know my name... I don’t have to save them... I can leave... I can leave)"
The blonde thought, trying to accept that reality, one where she would continue her path and leave those boys to their fate.
At that moment Lucian touched her shoulder and, with a small smile, nodded, he had seen the guilt in her eyes and knew the mission was a lesser concern compared to a burden she might carry for the rest of her life.
Ebony then ran to retrieve her backpack, which the hunters had taken when they kidnapped her.
When she found her belongings, she quickly searched for the bandages she had and a couple of healing potion bottles, she had an idea.
She ran back and approached the boy with the sword in his lung, Ebony improvised a gauze with the bandages and poured healing potion onto the cloth.
"This is going to hurt like a horse kicking you in the crotch, but you have to endure it," Ebony said before pulling the sword from the boy’s body.
Then, carefully and gently, she inserted the potion-soaked gauze into the wound.
The moment it touched the exposed flesh and flowing blood, the young hunter began clawing at the dirt from the pain.
Ebony pushed the gauze deep into the open wound, then placed her hands over it and cast her spell.
"Heal!"
{{Life Magic: Purification}}
Suddenly a green glow covered the gauze inside the wound, it began losing the reddish color it had from the healing potion.
The hunters watched in surprise, they did not understand what the girl intended beyond purifying a piece of cloth that kept staining with blood every second.
However something curious began to happen, the boy’s wound stopped bleeding and slowly began to close, at that moment Ebony quickly pulled the gauze out of the wound.
She soaked the white cloth again with healing potion and repeated the process, over and over, gradually healing the injury until it fully closed.
"That’s it! I knew it would work... Well no... But it worked, ha..." Ebony said in relief as she wiped the sweat from her forehead.
"What exactly did you do?" Lucian asked, surprised by the result.
"Well... If I use purification on cloth, it loses its color and basically any component it has that can be considered toxic or harmful to the body, however that toxicity doesn’t just disappear," the blonde explained.
"Matter isn’t created or destroyed, it only transforms, it’s a law of the universe, so technically purification doesn’t erase what’s toxic in the cloth, it simply transforms it so it becomes part of the environment and leaves only the fabric, kind of like evaporating the impurities."
Lucian and the hunters listened carefully and with curiosity.
"But using that principle we can put healing potion inside a wound and use purification so it penetrates every cell instantly, increasing its effectiveness!"
Ebony said excitedly, not only because she was understanding magic more each day, but because she had saved a life, the boy was now out of danger.
