I, the Villain, Want to Save Myself, But the Yandere Heroines Disagree-Chapter 97 - Will You Feel Guilty? (2/4)
Mudrick slept until daybreak. Light streamed through the window, and for a moment, he felt disoriented.
Then, something clicked in his mind.
He bolted upright and ran downstairs.
The scene was the same as when he had gone to bed.
For a moment, Mudrick thought he was dreaming.
He pinched himself.
No, this was real.
What the hell?
Where were my men?
Where did all my people go?
Mudrick couldn’t believe it. He rushed to the main hall and checked the wall clock.
Morning had come.
And still, his men hadn’t returned.
A chilling thought crept into his mind.
Could... could they all be dead?
Just then, he noticed a paper placed on the reception desk.
The message, printed in precise Imperial script, read:
Two days later, meet in the forest outside the city.
Clearly, they were setting a trap for him.
“The bastards! Can’t beat me, so they go after my men instead? What kind of cowardly tactic is this?!” Mudrick roared, slamming his fist down on the desk, shattering it into splinters.
He conveniently ignored the fact that, just days ago, he had accepted a mission to kidnap someone else’s loved ones.
When he had worked as the “black gloves” of the nobility—eliminating whoever they wanted gone—he never once considered himself dishonorable.
—
“Doctor.”
Inside Virgil’s gang headquarters, Litte, Virgil, and the Doctor sat together.
“What is it?” The Doctor lounged on the sofa, cleaning his nails, and glanced at Litte.
“Why did you kill those people? I told you before—we needed to show sincerity to lure Mudrick out.”
“Relax. You captured some alive, didn’t you?” The Doctor chuckled. “I only killed four. You got nearly ten hostages.”
“And even if we had killed them all, would it really change whether Mudrick shows up? He doesn’t know how many we have.”
“That’s not the point!” Litte quickly refuted.
“If I were Mudrick and found out some of my men were already dead, I’d be far less inclined to negotiate.”
Virgil, his wounds still healing, watched silently from the other sofa.
“What if I told you those men deserved to die?” the Doctor said, glancing at Litte.
“I’ve killed a lot of people over the years—but only those who deserved it.”
“You think you can judge who deserves to die?”
“Yes.” The Doctor nodded. “I only ask three questions: Have you killed before? If so, how many? Do you think those people deserved to die?”
“If they hesitate, lie, or waver—I can tell. And if they truly believe they’re innocent, I let them go.”
“Honestly, if you hadn’t already captured those hostages, I probably would’ve interrogated them one by one. And based on the kind of jobs the Iron Wolf Mercenary Group takes, none of them would have survived.”
Saying this, the Doctor handed a recording magic stone to Litte, then walked to the door.
“Those who kill should be prepared to be killed.” The Doctor turned back. “Litte, I’m guessing you haven’t killed anyone yet?”
“Must be nice—not having to bear the burden of taking a life.”
“I hope your hands stay clean after this.”
“But more importantly—” The Doctor tapped his chest. “Keep your heart clean.”
With that, he stepped out and shut the door.
“Don’t mind him, Young Master Litte,” Virgil reassured her.
After briefly working with the Doctor, Virgil had already formed a rough impression of him.
“Don’t let others sway your convictions.”
“I...”
Litte stared at the recording magic stone, clenched her fists, then fed it her magic.
As the stone activated, she and Virgil saw the details of every contract Mudrick had recorded.
From basic escort missions to hostage rescues, and finally, to assassinations and poisonings.
This was the tale of a once-legitimate mercenary group’s descent into darkness.
And then, Litte saw the most horrifying contract of all.
A noble’s son had commissioned the Iron Wolf Mercenary Group to abduct a merchant’s daughter.
But it wasn’t just about making her his slave or concubine.
The contract included a chilling clause:
“I don’t care about her consent. If she resists too much, break her until she willingly spreads her legs for any man. I don’t care if she’s still pure—I just want a tool to satisfy my needs.”
Litte shuddered as she imagined what that girl must have endured.
As a fellow woman, she could feel the horror deep in her bones.
She was a duke’s daughter, yet even she wouldn’t dare abuse her power like this.
But a mere baron’s son had done something so vile.
At that moment, Litte truly understood how deeply rotten the nobility of the Empire had become.
The final image on the recording stone focused on the Doctor’s ring.
Litte recognized it instantly.
She had one just like it.
She touched the storage ring on her finger.
The message was clear.
Storage rings were expensive, but as the leader of the Iron Wolf Mercenary Group, Mudrick undoubtedly had one.
If the records in his office were already this damning, what might he be hiding in his storage ring?
Litte now knew exactly what her next step would be.
—
Mudrick had considered going to the city guards for help.
But Imperial law prioritized the safety of nobles and wealthy merchants.
Despite his wealth, he was still a mercenary leader.
To the guards, he was just another lowlife.
The guards had already received numerous complaints about the Iron Wolf Mercenary Group—about their drunken brawls and reckless behavior.
Now that his men had gone missing, the guards were probably celebrating.
To them, this was just another instance of criminals turning on each other.
The law wouldn’t get involved.
Mudrick was furious, but there was nothing he could do.
He had done too many bad things.
Even the guards despised him.
And if he made trouble for them, they’d send an eighth-tier enforcer to deal with him.
Or worse—the legendary Tier 9 powerhouse who ruled the Imperial City.
Not even a hundred of him could stand against someone like that.
