I Was Just a Cleaner... Until I Got the Demon Extraction System-Chapter 77: Demons Release
The hunt had begun. Damian and Mathias were looking for two participants to attack and lock inside their respective ritual rooms.
But that required some thinking.
"Who are we chasing?" Mathias asked, "It has to be someone we don't know or have affinity with."
"I think that guy, the man I knocked down in the first room. He looks decent, so it's a good idea to get him out of the test now."
Damian didn't like the man. He wanted to get him out of the test. Mathias didn't have an opinion of his own. He just went along with it. For him, Damian was the one calling the shots, and he would only listen and follow the plan. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
The first thing they had to do was locate that man. That wasn't so easy to do, considering how big the dungeon was. There were too many halls and rooms, so the man could be anywhere.
Still, Damian was not in a hurry. It was only a matter of time until he found the man. With his Demon Eye active, searching for that man was much easier. He could see in the dark and also see the traces of mana left by the participants.
Because there were many participants, it was essentially impossible for Damian to find the right trace, the one that belonged to that man; however, it was only a matter of time until he found the man.
Damian and Mathias walked through those corridors for twenty minutes, looking for the man. They found him after a while, but that came with a problem.
When they found the man, he was entering one of the ritual rooms. Well, sort of. He was staring at the door, thinking whether he should go inside or not. But when he saw Damian and Mathias — two people wearing creepy attire — he didn't think much and went inside the room.
Damian tried to run and get close enough to grab the man, but it didn't work. The man entered the ritual room and was now locked.
"Damn it," Damian said.
That was not a good thing. They had wasted quite a bit of time looking for that man, only to not catch him. They still needed to find two people to lock inside the ritual rooms, and their time was limited.
In fact, they were running out of time.
"What if they release the demons after four people find the ritual rooms? If that's the case, then there's only one person who needs to find it, no?" Damian shared it with Mathias, "and it will get much harder for us to find people to trap in the ritual rooms while having to fight against demons."
Mathias looked worried as well. "This is not looking great for us. What should we do?"
Damian thought about waiting there and confronting the man after he left the ritual room. Perhaps they could talk to each other and help one another, considering they were now on the same team.
But losing more time waiting for the man to leave the ritual room? No, they didn't want that.
"Let's move and find someone, fast!"
He just didn't want to take the risk. So, Damian and Mathias left. This time, Damian grabbed Mathias, placing him on his shoulders, and ran.
"Don't mind me," Damian said, "I really need to go fast, and you aren't that fast, my friend."
"It's okay," Mathias said, "I won't feel bad about having to be carried around..."
That was what he said, but deep down, Mathias felt like he was just a weight slowing Damian down. It made him feel useless, like someone who shouldn't belong to Damian's team.
Anyway, Damian ran through the corridors so fast that people could barely see him. The examiners were, once again, shocked. Each time Damian shocked them even further. They were all curious about what he was capable of doing.
After just ten minutes, Damian found someone. Or rather, a group of four people. He was in the corridor, but then he stopped right beside a door.
Then, he placed his ear on the door and heard some noises inside the room. He put Mathias down and made a hand gesture to him.
Mathias wasn't stupid. He realized what Damian meant by that. Damian pushed the door open.
When he did, he saw a few people inside the room. All men. Damian had seen their faces before during other tests, but they weren't people that he actually paid close attention to.
When they saw two men wearing animal head masks and staring at them like two creepy individuals, they became scared.
"Who are you? What do you want?" one of them said.
Damian wasn't there to talk with them. He was there to fight them and lock them inside the ritual room. However, since there were four people and they needed only two, he decided to play a game.
"We are going to kidnap two out of four," Damian said, "so, who will be the ones getting away? How are we supposed to choose?"
One of them laughed at that. It was an anxious laugh. "What the hell are you saying? We are going to work together, right, boys? We aren't going to betray each other!"
Despite this, the other three didn't say a word when the man made the statement. They just exchanged glances. Damian knew what they were thinking.
They had already chosen one of them who would be kidnapped. All three worked together to restrain the man, attacking him from behind.
It was sad to watch the scene, but that was how things worked. They weren't friends, but people who decided to work together during the tests. In the end, what mattered was passing the tests, and not making friends for life.
After restraining the man, they tossed him toward Damian.
"Now you have one," they said, "so you only need another one?"
Damian nodded. "That's correct. So, how are you choosing this time?"
They had something else in mind. "We know where to find someone else. It's close to here. What do you say?"
Apparently, those three were a tighter group. They didn't want any of them to get kidnapped like that other guy.
Damian wasn't sure if that was a good thing. "How can I trust you?" he asked, "What if you try to run away?"
"After seeing what we did, do you really think we are joking?" one of them said, "We don't want to fail the test."
They did sound genuine. Damian ordered Mathias to grab the restrained man, who was unconscious. Damian wanted to keep his hands ready to fight against the trio if needed.
"I'll show you the way."
The trio left the room first. Apparently, they were once a group of five people, and one of them decided to leave. That was the person they were looking for.
"He left five minutes ago, so we will find him quite easily."
They weren't lying. After walking for a while at a faster pace, they found the person who was once part of their group. The man was shocked when he saw all of them there, especially when his gaze fell on Damian and Mathias.
"What do you want now?" he yelled, "I said I don't want to be part of your group anymore."
Damian didn't say a word. He just ran and attacked the man, using his strength to beat him up and knock him down with a few punches to the body and one to the head.
After that, he grabbed the man and placed him on his shoulder.
"Thank you for your help," he said, "but be careful. There are others who want to kidnap the participants. Stay safe for a while. Hide."
Now that Damian and Mathias had passed the first part of the test, they didn't care if the other chasers passed it or not. So, he gave them a small tip.
"Thank you for sparing us."
They even bowed to him. It was funny. Damian was pretty sure that they didn't know he was one of the participants. They certainly thought that he was one of the examiners instead.
Anyway, Damian and Mathias returned to their respective ritual rooms. Once there, they used the wall chains to lock two participants.
Those people had failed the test now, but Damian didn't care.
After that, he and Mathias met up again.
"We now only need to wait until they release the demons," Damian said.
"Yes, indeed. But this might be the hardest part, no? Fighting demons is scary..."
Mathias didn't have any experience with fighting demons. Damian had it, but he wasn't that calm either. The tests had been quite easy for him, but it wasn't easy to get the hunter ID. So, that could only mean the next tests would be much harder.
"It is, but if we work together, we should be fine," Damian said.
They waited, and waited. After two hours, the demons finally started to show up. And their numbers were quite high...
Damian was shocked when he realized how infested the dungeon was. The next part of the test had started, and now they would have to fight for their lives.
