Chapter 143: The DarkChild

~ODETTE’S POV~

"I bring you news." She paused a sad looked stretched across her face "It’s about your mother."

"My mother?" I raised my eyebrow, "What about my mother?"

"You see, I had a visitor, one who is not welcome in my domain, but he had important information to share, so I gave him permission to enter." Phera began explaining to me.

"Who came knocking uninvited then?" I asked

"The Leviathan."

"The Leviathan? You mean to tell me he’s not just a myth? A fantasy? But real?" Shock didn’t even begin to cover the expression on Ambrose’s face.

"Yes, why would I lie?" Phera frowned, she was too serious sometimes, I swear.

"Who’s the Leviathan?" I’ve only heard of it in the Judaist bible and movies.

They both looked at me like I was crazy "What?"

"You don’t know about the Leviathan?" They both asked nearly at the same time.

"No, I haven’t? So, maybe enlighten me?" I was a bit snappier than I intended, but I didn’t like it when people acted so shocked someone hasn’t heard of something.

Phera started "Leviathan is an ancient entity, one of the first beings made by the gods. Leviathan is neither male nor female, they are whatever they decide to be, the only true shifter, capable of transitioning into any species any sex and with only one true form. A monstrous looking beast. A mortal upper body with the lower half of a giant snake. Skin black as coal, eyes that glow like the setting sun, and scales that glisten the same as its eyes. You know the story the great Judaist bible of Eve eating from the tree of knowledge? It was never a tree that held knowledge, but the entity that lived in the tree that did. The snake that ’tricked’ Eve was Leviathan. It wasn’t an apple she ate, but a beast she offered herself too. Leviathan deals with knowledge. They’re a record keeper, a historian of such. But knowledge can’t be freely given, to gain access to what Leviathan knows, a trade of the flesh must be made, and it chooses what flesh they would take. The more valuable the knowledge, the more expensive the trade."

I couldn’t believe it. There’s literally a monster as old as dirt. One that holds the answers. Answers I need but don’t know the questions to ask.

I wonder if there’s a way I can speak with it? Convince it to answer my questions. But what flesh could I offer it? What would it want.

"And Leviathan is tricky, it’s old and bored. So, like a toddler it plays games and pranks, because what else is a millenias old beast to do with its immortality." Phera had a strong bitterness undertone to her words this time. I’m guessing it’s related to the reason she doesn’t like them? Maybe? Guess asking her for help with him is probably out of the question.

"So, a snake like entity came to your mountain with information and gave it for free?" I was a little confused, she said it comes at a cost.

"No, I had to trade information to get it. Nothing is free dear." She didn’t sound as condescending as the words she used.

"What information did you trade, Phera..." Ambrose growled.

Phera snapped her head and her eyes glowed white like mine, "Don’t you dare insult me with your accusations! I would never give this place away or put the MoonChild at unnecessary risk."

Ouch. She threw her sharp voice like a dagger at his throat.

"How did you know that’s what I was thinking?" Ambrose shouted back to her.

"Because you are tied to the MoonChild, and she is created of my creator I can hear her thoughts, as well as yours. Seems Goddess Artemis has outdone herself this time." Phera smiled. I could practically see the pride pouring from her.

"Okay, back to the Leviathan. What’s the news?" The anticipation was killing me.

"And what’s the cost?" Ambrose added.

"Information on the DarkChild. For information on the MoonChild. And before you jump, Leviathan is with your King Asher your mortal father. The information was traded for him. The bastard actually did something with generosity in mind."

I practically jumped at her. "You mean to tell me Leviathan is with my father! How is he? Just my father where’s my mother?"

"That’s the news I bring." She looked down and sighed. Taking a deep breath before she began "Your other mother, the queen. She’s missing. She went through some..." Phera fidgeted uncomfortable, "Changes. Leviathan told me she’s possessed by the DarkChild. And that she’s building an army of beasts."

Beasts? Possessed?

"Like what?" Ambrose’s voice was fading out as my head started to spin.

My mother was possessed. Possessed and building an army.

My mother?

I grabbed fistfuls of hair, shaking my head back and forth. The anxiety flooded my heart and mind. My thoughts were moving so fast I couldn’t hold on to them for long.

My mother was the DarkChild. My equal, my enemy, my destiny to fight and destroy. The reality was crashing around me.

Gravity was pulling me down, the weight of Phera’s words pressed my body to the floor.

I collapsed. The dread wrapped around me like a blanket of pain, encasing me in it. Holding my thoughts and feelings hostage.

I hugged myself, tucking inward. I wanted to escape this feeling. This worry.

How cruel was fate to turn my own mother against me? Force me to choose between saving the world or saving my mother.

’Hey my little fox, come back to me. You’re fading.’ I heard his voice pushing through the panic clouding my mind.

I looked up at his soothing smile. A smile he made only for me.

He tucked a loose strand of my hair behind my ear.

"What am I going to do?" my lip quivered as I looked at him with pleading eyes.

"Everything we can." He pulled me in close hugging me "We’ll do everything we can. I promise."

His reassuring words were calming. Exactly what I needed to hear.

"Phera... This can’t be real... Tell me this isn’t real..." I begged her.

"I’m sorry MoonChild, it is the way the wheel turned, and the goddess Artemis did what she could to make things work in our favor. The rest is still unwritten. Destiny has many paths that change constantly."
