Chapter 189: Chapter 189

As I freed the remaining beasts, the chaos of the night enveloped the estate. The roars and howls of the creatures echoed in the distance, as they run for their freedom. Yet, even amid the turmoil, I couldn’t shake the growing power emanating from Kairos’s dagger. It felt like a heartbeat—warm, pulsing, and guiding me toward something important.

The path to the main auction house was unnaturally quiet. The guards I had grown accustomed to seeing were absent, leaving the halls eerily still. It granted me the freedom to tread lightly towards my destination.

As I approached the room Zander had described, the dagger Kairos had given me began to hum softly at my side, a warmth radiating from it that was almost comforting yet unsettling at the same time. I paused, glancing down at the blade, which shimmered faintly in the dim light. What could it mean?

The door was slightly ajar, allowing me to peek inside.

I saw Kairos calmly sitting on a chair, his gaze was fixed on Jaxon, who was bloodied and restrained beneath Thorne’s grip. There’s another person who’s with them and it was Kyler, who was sprawled on the ground, lifeless.

I had inadvertently completed a part of their mission by killing the two and incapacitating the other one but now I needed to focus on my own priorities. I glanced one last time over my shoulder, the urge to say goodbye to Kairos. In the end, I turned my back so I won’t interrupt them.

As I made my way back through the dimly lit hallways, I couldn’t help but feel the dagger’s warmth gradually dissipating, its glow fading.

Reaching the main entrance, I pulled open the heavy door and stepped outside into the cool night air. The moon hung high, as it glowed over the landscape. I glanced at my watch—3 A.M. Today was already Monday and I need to be at the academy just in time for my first class.

As soon as I opened the door, I slumped down due to exhaustion. The weight of the night’s events settled heavily on my shoulders, dragging me down.

Macaron and Glacier, who had been peacefully sleeping in the bed, jolted awake as they heard the loud thud of my body hitting the wooden floor. Their eyes instantly widened with concern as they scrambled to my side.

"Master!" Macaron exclaimed, his body bumping against me up and down.

"Urgh..." I groaned in exhaustion as they continued to nuzzle against me, especially Glacier, who was more affectionate by nature. "Don’t worry about me; I’m here now," I reassured them, absentmindedly petting Glacier’s head as I tried to shake off the fatigue.

But Macaron wasn’t having it. His little nose twitched as he sniffed around me anxiously. "I’m worried about something else, Master!" he declared, his wings searching my clothes as if looking for something hidden away.

"What are you looking for?" I asked, finally mustering the energy to stand, though Glacier instinctively lowered himself so I could lie down on his back. I felt a wash of warmth and comfort as I settled against him; his soft fur nestled against my skin was soothing.

"As you can see, I have no wounds," I said, trying to inject some humor into the situation, but Macaron wasn’t listening. His brows furrowed even deeper.

"That’s not it!" he insisted, his voice evidently agitated as he darted to my side. "Where’s food?"

"...." Why this greedy little pig. Don’t tell me he devoured all the foods again and left Glacier with nothing?

My thought was cut off when Macaron whined. "Master?"

"No food for you," I said, closing my eyes. "I’ll be cooking for Glacier only. Go find food on your own."

"What?!" Macaron protested, his voice rising with indignation as he continued to shuffle around, chattering away about his opinions on my unfairness. "But Master! How can you deny me food? After all..."

But as he continued talking and talking. I felt my eyelids growing heavier. I barely caught snippets of his pleas echoing in my ears as I surrendered myself to sleep.

Buzz! Buzz!

The alarm blared, jolting me awake. I glanced hazily at the clock: 6:00 A.M. ’Just five more minutes,’ I thought as I snoozed the alarm again, sinking back into the comforting haze of sleep.

Buzz! Buzz!

The alarm rang out once more, stretching my patience thin. I hit the snooze button again, groaning softly.

Buzz! Buzz!

Finally, the persistent buzz pulled me from the depths of sleep. I shot up, my eyes widening as I noticed the time: 7:20 A.M. Panic coursed through me. I was going to be late again!

I scrambled out of bed, startling Glacier and Macaron awake, their wide eyes blinking as they watched me frantically moving back and forth.

I stood up as I dashed to the bathroom. While quickly taking a bath, I could hear Glacier’s soft whines and Macaron’s frantic attempts to brush my hair as I brushed my teeth and threw on my uniform.

As I sprinted toward the door, I noticed they were on the verge of closing their eyes again, thinking they could catch a few more minutes of sleep. I swung the door open and dashed to the refrigerator, grabbing a whole slab of meat and placing it on Glacier’s plate.

"Eat up! Bye you two!" I called over my shoulder.

Just as I was about to step out, Macaron’s voice pierced the air, full of indignation. "Hey! That’s not fair! What about my food?!"

I paused momentarily as I glanced back at Macaron. "I promise I’ll bring you something after school!" I shouted back, not entirely sure they would understand that I was only trying to get to class on time.

"Promises, promises!" he grumbled, crossing his wings, though I could see the twinkle of mischief in his eyes despite his protests.

"I’ll see you both later!" I called once more, not waiting for a reply. I hurried outside, feeling a rush of air against my face as I rushed down the path that led to the academy.

"This semester, your combat training class will be experiencing real-life missions," Instructor Jude announced, his voice resonating through the lecture hall filled.

As the other cadets leaned forward with eager anticipation, I was the only one with my head down on the desk. I tried to focus, forcing my eyelids to stay open, but the exhaustion from the previous night clung to me like a heavy blanket. My thoughts drifted in and out of consciousness, and before I knew it, I was out cold, the echoes of my classmates buzzing softly in the background.

"Mission Experience," he continued, his tone more serious now. "As cadets, you will have the opportunity to experience the various missions that Heroes undertake. It is essential for your training and preparation for the realities of our world."

Jude pointed to a large board displaying the six mission options, each one neatly listed for us to consider:

Rescue Operation: In this mission, cadets will simulate rescuing a captured individual from enemy territory, requiring stealth, reconnaissance, and teamwork.

Search and Retrieve: Navigate a hazardous environment to locate and retrieve valuable resources while avoiding traps and adversaries.

Infiltration: Work in small teams to infiltrate a mock enemy base, gathering intelligence while evading detection and security measures.

Obstacle Course Challenge: Test your battle skills in a controlled arena setting against live opponents.

Monster Subjugation: Work with a team to defeat a series of monsters inside a dungeon, castle, cave, village, and city.

Jude paused to let the information sink in, and he could hear the murmurs of excitement and determination rising among among the students. They were already discussing which missions sounded the most thrilling or challenging.

"Now write your name on these papers and check which one of the missions you’ll be joining," Jude instructed, his voice commanding attention once more.

Whispers filled the room as cadets began to scribble their names and choices down, but not everyone was awake enough to participate eagerly.

Me, still groggy from my earlier doze, was jolted awake by Whitney, who passed me a paper. "Here, check the box where you want to join," she urged with a friendly nudge.

Yawning widely, I barely registered what she was saying. Without much thought, I grabbed the papers from her and, still half-asleep, passed the last one to Rex, who was sitting on the last row.

I don’t want something do right now so I didn’t bother reading the contents and passed my sheet to Cypher. "Can you answer this for me just this once?" I whispered to Cypher, feeling too drowsy to think straight.

Cypher paused writing from his paper and looked at me, amused. "Alright," he said as he grabbed the paper. "What mission do you want to join? Do you have one in mind?"

I blinked at him, opening my mouth to respond, but no words came. Instead, I found myself fighting against the pull of sleep yet again. My eyelids felt heavy, my mind drifting drowsily in and out of consciousness.

When Cypher didn’t hear an answer, he turned to look at me again, his expression morphing from curiosity to bemusement. I was already sleeping back in my seat, head tilted slightly to the side.

With a chuckle, Cypher shook his head, his voice laced with amusement. "What a sleepyhead."

Unbeknownst to me, Cypher took a moment to ponder. He checked the same mission he’d planned to participate in: Search and Retrieve.
