Chapter 192: Chapter 192

7:05 P.M.

Buzz! Buzz!

Macaron and I had just finished dinner and were settling in for a drama marathon when my phone beeped. The message was from Kairos.

{Are you still up?}

"Yup, is there something you need?" I said.

{Link: scarletphantom.union.org

Username: Tigris

Password: yourchoice}

"Scarlet Phantom website?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

{It’s like an illegal website for awakened ones. You can find the latest news, missions, and updates regarding awakened people that normal people don’t know about,} Kairos replied.

"Thanks for this, but why are you giving me a Scarlet Phantom account and why is my username ’Tigris’?" I asked.

{One; It’s easier to send your rewards here. Otherwise, the government will get suspicious if unknown accounts keep sending money to your bank account. And two; that will be your code name from now on, } Kairos explained.

"So you’ll be sending my reward right now?" I asked, more concerned about the money.

He didn’t reply. Instead, my new Scarlet Phantom account pinged with a notification. I opened it to see money credited to my balance.

"Thank you for this, boss!" I typed unconsciously, hitting "send" before I could stop myself.

My smile faltered. Damn, I lost it! Thinking about the money made me slip into autopilot. I’m not even in his group, and yet I just called him "boss" as if I were already a member.

Instead of clarifying, I let it hang. I waited, but got no immediate reply.

Buzz! Buzz!

A few minutes later, another notification. I peeked and somehow I was half disappointed to see it was from my group chat and not Kairos. I muted the group chat for an hour.

Buzz! Buzz!

Checking again, it was from Kairos.

{As a reward for calling me boss, I’ve sent a gift at your place.}

I wanted to reply, but another message popped up.

{I think it’s already being delivered at your doorstep.} Kairos replied.

Just then, a knock echoed through the apartment. I got up, opened the door, and there stood a delivery robot, a box in its hand.

"Remillia Lockhart, you have a delivery," the robot announced.

I grabbed the small, neatly-wrapped box. Closed the door and went to my room. I landed on my bed and tore it open.

Inside, a pair of sapphire stud earrings. Unconsciously, I compared the color to the shade of Kairos’ eyes.

{Have you checked it?} Kairos’ text appeared, almost as if anticipating my actions.

"They’re beautiful," I texted back.

{Try wearing them.}

I did as instructed. They felt weightless, as if I wasn’t wearing anything at all.

"Are these earrings just for show?" I asked.

{No, they’re enchanted. Considering your... reckless approach to missions, they have a defensive spell that instantly blocks critical attacks and adaptive armor.}

My eyebrows furrowed. "Adaptive armor?"

{It dynamically adjusts to temperature changes.}

This earring might actually come in handy.

"Thank you, boss," I typed, then tossed my phone aside. I wanted to stop using the "boss" thing, but these earrings felt like a solid reason to use it one last time.

Buzz! Buzz!

My phone buzzed constantly. I groaned, jolted awake by the continuous pinging. I checked my phone and was stunned to see 53 missed calls and 256 messages from my group chat.

My eyes widened as I scrolled back through the messages. A dungeon run was planned for today. I was already asleep at 10 P.M. when they started discussing about the details of the dungeon run.I checked the time and location: 10 AM at the portal station in Aeonia. We will be going to Salos.

I looked at the time, it’s already 9:45 A.M.

Why was I always the last one to wake up? A flurry of frantic morning routines followed: brushing, showering, getting dressed.

"Macaron! Don’t finish all the food, or I swear you’ll be sleeping outside!" I yelled, already rushing out the door.

Thud!

Then, my face collided with something— hard. I stumbled back, my nose hitting a wall... or rather, a chest. It was Kairos again.

"You again?" I mumbled, rubbing my nose. "I’m practically guaranteed a nosebleed at this point."

"It’s not my fault your face seems determined to land on my chest," he said, a hint of amusement in his voice.

"Let’s just go. We’re gonna be late meeting with the rest of the team," I said as we walked side-by-side.

Portal Station, Aeonia

All of the Search and Retrieve team were all there, except for two person.

"Why is it that Remillia’s always the last one to arrive?" Angela huffed, her brow furrowed.

"Don’t say that. Caleo’s also running late," Cypher countered, defending Remillia.

"Wha-" Angela started to retort, but then bit her tongue, she doesn’t want Cypher to hate her.

"Come to think of it, she didn’t reply to any of our late-night messages, perhaps she slept early," Ezekiel suggested, attempting to lighten the tension.

"We all know Remillia’s always late. My question is, how did Caleo even get on our team?" Troy muttered, his eyes darting towards the portal.

Before the debate could escalate further, Jawn, who hasn’t said a word since coming here, finally spoke. "They’re here."

All eyes turned to the portal leading to the academy. Sure enough, the missing two figures materialized.

I waved my hands energetically as I sprinted toward the group, a broad smile plastered on my face.

"We’re here now!" I announced, putting on my brightest smile. I hope they won’t scold us.

"You’re ten minutes late," Troy replied with an arched eyebrow.

I brushed it off as I turned to greet my friends. "Hi Angela! Hi Cypher!" I said enthusiastically.

"Sorry about that," I continued, giving my best apologetic shrug. "The line to the portal was super long." That was only half the truth; we’d been so engrossed in a conversation about Glacier that we completely lost track of time and nearly missed our chance to enter the portal!

"Hi Remi, late as usual huh?" Cypher chuckled, amusement dancing in his eyes.

"It’s fine. It’s only ten minutes anyway; we still have plenty of time," Ezekiel added, flashing me a reassuring smile.

I nodded appreciatively, grateful for their understanding. Turning my gaze toward Jawn, I couldn’t help but smile wider. "Hey, Jawn! It’s been so long since we teamed up!"

"Same here," he replied, his tone flat but his eyes revealing an unspoken friendship. Jawn had always been a man of few words, but I appreciated the times we built over our past tests and missions.

"Now that we’re all here, let’s go to Salos!" Troy exclaimed excitedly.

We quickly made our way to the bus stop.

One by one, we boarded the bus. I was first in line, quickly securing a seat by the window. Angela followed, taking a seat in the back. Troy, eager to join her, was about to settle in beside her, but Angela shot him a glare that clearly communicated "not in my space, dude." He pouted, finding another seat instead which is in front of me.

Then Jawn stepped aboard. Surprisingly, he sat down beside me. Knowing him, he’d rather pay for two seats so that no one could seat beside him.

I shot him a questioning glance.

He seemed to understand the unspoken query in my eyes, but only shrugged. "It’s interesting," he murmured.

"What’s interesting?" I pressed, intrigued.

But he remained silent.

Next came Ezekiel, his gaze darting around the bus. When his eyes landed on me, his expression brightened, but a frown quickly replaced the warmth as he saw who was seated next to me. He opted for the seat beside Troy. Cypher, next in line, exhibited the same hesitance, and took the seat beside Angela.

Finally, Kairos. He paused, his eyes lingering on me for a second before paying for two seats and took the one on the opposite side of the aisle from me.

"Heh."

I glanced beside me and saw Jawn stifling a laugh.

"What’s so funny?" I asked, my brow furrowing slightly.

"I told you, it’s interesting to watch," Jawn said, his eyes still twinkling with suppressed amusement.

Knowing that pressing him for an explanation would be futile, I decided to drop the subject. But I couldn’t help but notice a peculiar expression flitting across his face.

"I didn’t know you had a dimple," I said, reaching out and poking the small indentation on his cheek.

The air around us suddenly turned cold.

"Did the driver turn on the air conditioner?" I asked, trying to lighten the mood, though my tone was a little too bright.

Jawn stopped smiling completely. He pulled my finger away from his cheek. "I don’t have a dimple," he said, his voice a little strained.

"Come on, smile just once!" I said, pinching his cheeks. "Don’t you know that you can have many girlfriends as you like if you smile often?"

"S-stop it," Jawn said, his hands gripping mine tightly. "My face will be posted on the missing person’s board if you keep this up."

Chuckling, I released my grip. "You don’t even have any enemies. Who would want to kill you?"

"Currently, there are three of them glaring at me," Jawn muttered, his eyes darting around the bus.

However, I wasn’t listening anymore, my attention drawn back to the rapidly changing scenery outside. The bright colors of Monfort blurred into a kaleidoscope of motion, the city receding behind the bus as we sped toward Salos.

A portal recently appeared in the underground train station in Salos and the academy had received special permission to enter the portal for student training missions.
