Chapter 197: Chapter 197

I had no choice but to step inside the abandoned warehouse as I scanned the dimly lit space. Three floors appeared before me; he basement, ground floor, and top floor. I could see at least ten Rogues patrolling the ground and top floors, their silhouettes shifting in the shadows.

First things first—I needed to take out the Rogues on the ground floor. I moved swiftly, dispatching them one by one. Once the ground was clear, I ascended to the top floor, neutralizing the remaining threats. But still, no sign of Kara. That could only mean one thing: she was in the basement.

I descended the stairs, the air growing colder and heavier with each step. As I reached the bottom, the sight that greeted me sent a chill down my spine. At least twenty people were crammed into a large, reinforced cell, their faces gaunt and eyes hollow. Each wore a thick, dark collar—resonance inhibitors, designed to suppress their abilities, just like the one I had endured at the Black Lotus Exchange Auction House.

"You don’t need to worry about them. They’re all weak and helpless," a voice sliced through the silence.

I quickly ducked behind a stack of crates and scanned the cells, searching for the source of the voice. And then I saw her. Inside one of the cells, leaning against the bars with an air of bored indifference, was Kara Lughen.

"We’ll leave as soon as the rest of the humans come here. Honestly, we would have a hard time without the resonance inhibitor you’ve given us," Kara said, her voice echoing slightly in the cavernous space. She was filing her nails, completely unconcerned with the suffering surrounding her.

"A plan? It’s simple. I’ll act out again. The story is that I’ll be left here, battered and bruised because the guards abused me. A few of our allies will be left, and I’ll tell the authorities that they saved me from the guards he sent," she continued, her tone light as she spoke into her phone.

"Hahaha! They won’t get mad at me, I assure you. I’ve got them all wrapped up in my pretty finger," Kara continued, her laughter ringing out, devoid of any warmth or humanity.

I gripped my dagger tightly, aiming for her phone. With a flick of my wrist, the blade sliced through the air, shattering the screen in a shower of sparks and glass.

"What—" Kara’s surprise was short-lived. Before she could react, I hurled another dagger straight for her heart.

However, Kara was faster than I anticipated. With a swift, almost inhuman movement, she snatched the dagger out of the air, the blade embedding itself in her palm. Blood, a startlingly vibrant red, dripped onto the concrete floor.

"Can you just show yourself? I’ve already detected your presence a while ago," Kara said, her voice low and dangerous. The casual indifference was gone, replaced by a chilling intensity. And then, her eyes began to glow, a malevolent, dark red light emanating from within.

’She felt my presence? Since when?’ I thought, deciding it was time to reveal myself.

Kara smirked, throwing my dagger back at me. But before I could catch it, it visibly decayed, rotting in mid-air.

Only the followers of Vhinka, Bringer of Pestilence and Decay, possess this kind of ability.

"So you made a deal with a demon just to have this kind of power? I must say, you’re pathetic," I shot back.

Instead of being annoyed at what I said, she only smirked at me. "Pathetic? Oh please!" She laughed. "This pathetic ability of mine managed to bring the great Neeve Lughen to his knees!"

She dragged a chair over and sat down, facing me with a smug expression. "I became the princess of the Lughen Family. What I say goes. Daddy does whatever I tell him, and Mommy? At first, I want her to be fed to the beasts we kept but I’ve changed my mind so she became my personal maid now," she said, her tone casual as if discussing the weather.

"What happens if they disobey you?" I pressed, unable to hide my disgust.

"Simple," she said, twirling a lock of hair around her finger. "Anyone who disobeys me decays just from touching them."

"You’re sick," I replied, my voice barely above a whisper, the weight of her cruelty settling heavily in the air.

She glared at me, her eyes narrowing as I prepared to pull my dagger. "You have no idea what this body has endured because of her family before she sold her soul to our god. I’m just returning the favor they gave her."

"You can read memories from your victims?" I asked, my curiosity piqued despite the danger.

"Yes, and just to clarify, she’s not a victim. She willingly gave her soul," Kara explained, her tone dripping with disdain. "So, what brings you here?"

"To kill you," I replied, my voice steady.

"Let me guess," she said, a mocking laugh escaping her lips. "There are only two people who could offer the highest price to take me out: the family members I crashed my car into and my sweet deary daddy."

I couldn’t help but ask, "Did you crash your car on purpose or was it an accident?"

"Oh honey, it’s not an accident if you put your heart into it," Kara replied, a wicked smile spreading across her face.

"Why would you do that?" I pressed, intrigued.

"I staged the whole thing. The bus I crashed into was full of the people who made this body’s life a living hell," she said, her voice laced with satisfaction.

"I can’t understand. Why are you avenging her?" I asked, genuinely curious about her motives.

"Because it’s annoying to feel this body’s emotions, and I hate it. So I simply killed all the people who wronged her. What I find curious is that she doesn’t feel any hatred toward her parents, even though what they did to her was far worse than the people I’ve killed," Kara said, her expression shifting to one of contemplation.

I took a step closer, trying to understand the twisted logic behind her actions. "You think killing them will free you from her emotions?"

Kara shrugged, her smirk returning. "It’s a start. But it’s not just about freedom; it’s about power. I’m reclaiming what was taken from her, and in the process, I’m becoming something greater than she ever was."

"You’re different from all the Rogues I’ve met. Are you even a Rogue yourself?" I asked, grappling with the conflicting feelings her words stirred within me. What she did was wrong, yet somehow it felt righteous at the same time.

If I were her, I would also avenge the ones who did wrong to me.

Her expression shifted immediately from being playful to being dead serious. "You ask too many questions. Are you even here to kill me or not?"

"I’m just curious about you," I replied, pulling out my dagger and inching closer.

"Stay right there," Kara commanded, raising her hands toward the helpless people trapped in the cell. Their eyes widened in terror, and a chorus of screams filled the air.

"What are you doing?" I said, my heart racing as I braced for the worst.

"With just a snap of my fingers, I can turn them all to dust," Kara said, her voice calm and chilling.

"I thought you said your ability only activates by touching them?" I countered, trying to keep my composure. Her power was supposed to require direct contact.

"I forgot to mention," she said, resting her chin on her hand, her gaze fixed on me with a predatory glint. "I can still activate my ability even if I don’t directly touch them, as long as the things I’ve touched are within range."

I gritted my teeth as I drop my dagger down. "Okay, you win. I won’t move if you won’t do anything to them."

"You should have done that the first time I ordered you to" Kara said, her smirk widening. "And now, I’ll just have to kill them all."

Before she could snap her fingers, I sprinted toward her, desperation fueling my actions. "Void space!" I shouted, activating my skill.

In an instant, we were enveloped in a wide transparent space. The world outside became distorted and blurry, as if viewed through a thick veil of fog. Sounds and vibrations were muted, creating an eerie silence that swallowed the chaos around us. Time felt warped, and I could sense the shift in the environment.

When Kara finally snapped her fingers, nothing happened to the people. I sighed in relief as I seized the moment, lunging forward and slashing at her with my dagger. The blade connected, and she recoiled, surprise flashing across her face.

She quickly moved away from me but she can’t leave the space I created. "What is this?" Kara exclaimed, her eyes darting around as she surveyed the distorted surroundings.

"Your burial place," I replied, my heart racing as I prepared to close the distance between us. But just as I moved in, she lunged for my arm, her hand reaching out with a predatory grace. I evaded her grasp just in time, but she managed to touch the dagger I had been using.

In an instant, the blade began to rot away, disintegrating into a pile of dust as I quickly dropped it on the floor.
