Chapter 294: Doctor Medicine in Action?

[Marionette’s POV]

Marionette’s ears twitched at the sounds of glass shattering behind her. In her peripheral vision, she noticed three individual shadows loom over her from above.

The cultists, who had fallen through the windows like cannonballs, wielding weapons, were immediately skewered by a thick spike of darkness that shot out from Marionette’s shadow.

Marionette turned around, dark coldness flashing through her eyes as she watched the cultists swing their arms and weapons at her without any thought behind them.

She blinked at them, staring at their bodies that seemed to be even more rotten than any living person she had ever met.

"They truly are dead..."

The Assassin glanced around the room before enveloping the cultists in darkness.

The black sphere that had enveloped them then began to shrink, compressing and crushing the cultists inside until their bodies turned into pulp.

Marionette listened keenly, listening to the sounds of crunches and squelches—her face still and unmoving at her ways of eliminating the threat.

She had been given clear instructions on how to deal with the invaders by Lillian. Although she was still unaware of how the girl knew such crucial information, she didn’t care at that very moment.

How was Lillian? Was she also under attack? Had she eliminated the threat as quickly as she did?

Her thoughts caused the crushing shrinkage of the sphere to hasten its process, eventually reducing the enemies within into nothing but meaty pulp.

She then tossed out the sphere through the window, as though she were throwing out the trash.

Seeing that no blood or biological matter had spilt onto Lillian’s floor or walls, she nodded in satisfaction. She’d rather not dirty Lillian’s room as much as possible.

With this thought in mind, using her darkness, she threw out the glass shards scattered on the ground. Seeing that Lillian’s room was now clean to a degree, she moved towards the exit.

As soon as she made it to the front door, it was suddenly torn down and invaded by a cultist.

However, before they could completely enter the room, Marionette’s fist whipped from her side, shooting towards the centre of their mask and delivering a lethal blow that tore their entire head off.

Before the cultist could fall to the ground, Marionette had kicked them out of the doorway whilst cleaning her hands with a handkerchief with a repulsed look on her face.

"Filthy..." She muttered as she sanitised her knuckles.

Upon entering the corridor, she was immediately met with the corridor’s windows shattering, revealing a wave of invaders approaching her rapidly.

The world seemed to slow as this happened.

And the only thought that passed through her mind as this happened was...

’Vexing...’

***

[Lillian’s POV]

Lillian merged into the doctor’s group, watching as he summoned a handful of Shards that morphed into monsters of varying kind and shape. The only similarity was that they were all able to fit inside the hallways.

Knowing that she would be fine, she pulled up her quest panel.

A couple of minutes ago, after joining Doctor Medicine’s group, she had heard a soft ding sound go off in her ears.

And upon finding out the reason, she discovered that the number of people she had saved had increased.

[Number of people saved: 23, Number of people not saved: 6]

[Succession Rate Increase: 33%]

She was confused at this before realising once she had counted up the total people in the group. If she excluded herself, there were 23 people in total.

Could it be... Her joining Medicine’s group counted as her saving them?

Her theory was confirmed later on as she watched the doctor heal and save people along the way. This brought her current Success Rate Increase to 40%.

She grumbled gratefully inside her mind:

’Being charitable now, Lady Luck?’

Lillian then paused, seeing the entire group freeze as well when noticing Medicine raising a hand to gesture to them to stop.

Lillian tilted her head, trying to get a good view down the hallways and found a single cultist standing in the way with its arms raised and its palms directed at them.

This one... Was different.

Both she and Medicine knew it.

And it was confirmed not even a second later.

From within the centre of the cultist’s palms, fire erupted, spewing out flames like a dragon that rolled towards them with immense heat that would scorch them alive.

Lillian widened her eyes, feeling the world go slow.

This cultist must be one of the deceased teachers from the academy in the western region!

Medicine flashed his hand out, summoning a humanoid stone knight that carried a large shield—large enough for everyone to hide behind.

The stone surface of the knight began to slow, a soft orange, slowly growing deeper in vibrancy and intensity. Was it... Melting?

Medicine flashed out another Shard, this one reflecting the image of an emerald python with shimmering scales.

Upon retrieving and transforming the knight back into its Shard, Medicine tossed out the python Shard forward, causing it to shatter and form into a massive serpent whose width was the same as the corridor.

The serpent rushed down the corridor, enduring the blistering wave of flames and opening its jaws before snapping down on the cultist.

Its mouth, which was filled with a toxic chemical, melted down the enemy’s body.

After a while, Medicine turned the python back into its Shard before returning it to his Mana Realm for it to rest.

Lillian stared at his back, admiration flashing through her eyes as she recalled his history.

Before becoming the Head Doctor in the academy, Doctor Medicine was previously a military medic out on the frontlines—constantly engaging with the enemy while also healing his allies.

As the sparkles in her eyes shone, they soon disappeared as she watched the doctor smack the back of his spine repeatedly, trying to fix the cramp that he had just received.

Lillian sighed:

’He’s out of his prime, though... I’m glad he has a lot of Monster Shards to make up for it, though.’

As they continued to wander about, the building they were standing inside suddenly became lit up with an ethereal light.

Medicine, who quickly noticed this, turned back around.

"Everyone! Prepare for teleportation! We will be transported to a more safer area. An underground shelter, if you will."

As the monsters around them guarded their every angle, he counted the current people here. However, after counting up to 40, he felt as though something was wrong.

He counted again, looking at each individual’s face until realising...

"Has anyone seen an average-sized lady with white hair and blue eyes?"
