Chapter 243: The Final Match (1)

Before long, the final match began.

Although Felix had drunk the potion-infused water, which improved his condition, Lyla... wasn’t an easy opponent. She was more skilled at table tennis than he was to begin with, and on top of that, her match in the semi-finals was much shorter and easier, and she had more time to rest before the finals... Even with the potion, Felix couldn’t quite combat all that.

So, when Lyla served the first ball, they had a few exchanges, after which the woman ended up scoring the first point.

A satisfied smirk instantly blossomed on her face, and her chin lifted up a bit. It might have been just one point - for now - but to earn the first point, and fairly quickly at that, naturally boosted her confidence, while making Felix more nervous at the same time...

Or so she thought. But Felix wouldn’t be discouraged so easily. Quite the opposite, losing the point only made him focus even more, giving it his all.

"...And that’s 1-1!" one of Lyla’s friends, who took over hosting for this match, announced.

Felix lifted the corner of his lips, smirking at Lyla the same way she had done at him a moment ago.

Was he really this proud of himself? Not really! He was just doing it to rile Lyla up. From his observation, she seemed like the kind of person who wouldn’t be able to focus well when agitated. He was hoping that if he annoyed her, she might end up making mistakes...

And it worked, because Felix scored the next point as well!

...But the next three points went to Lyla.

"4-2 for Lyla!" the hostess exclaimed, with far more excitement than when Felix had scored any points.

It didn’t matter, though, at least not to Felix. The hostess might have been on Lyla’s side... But not everyone in the audience cheered her on. In fact, quite a lot of the pack members gathered had a more neutral stance. Lyla had a lot of supporters (or Omegas that didn’t want to cross her), but there were also those who disliked her.

It wasn’t like the Moonhill Pack, where the young Omegas were more or less united, all following one person, Ashley.

Well, either way, whether anyone was cheering for him or not wasn’t important. Felix just wanted to try his best to win it, so that the favor voucher wouldn’t fall into Lyla’s hands. Things would probably get more annoying if it did, at least for a week.

He lowered his stance, and gripped his paddle tighter, as Lyla tossed the ball up into the air with a smug smile back on her face...

Only for that smug smile to falter a few exchanges later, when she lost the point, bringing the game to 4-3 for her.

Then it returned when she scored the next point, only to vanish once again when Felix won the next two balls, tying with her at 5-5.

Lyla’s eyes narrowed, as she stared at Felix intensely from the other end of the table. The situation was in no way bad for her just yet - it was only the first game, they were tied, and she hadn’t even given it her all, since she was conserving her energy for the latter part of the match... But Felix had surpassed her expectations by far. Not only was he much faster and stronger than she thought he would be, but he didn’t seem to be tired at all, even after the intense match he had just had with Julien.

Just what kind of godly stamina did he have? It seemed that she had to start taking the match seriously... Although Felix was still at a disadvantage, as his technique was clearly lacking, if she wasn’t careful, she wouldn’t have the overwhelming victory. And she didn’t want to just win, she had to make sure it was definite, to leave Felix far behind in the dust!

So, she took a deep breath, focusing all of her attention on the match...

"...And that’s the end of the first game! Lyla scores the first win!" the hostess eventually announced.

Just this, without mentioning the score. Of course, everyone knew - it was still visible on the scoreboard hung on the wall, before the hostess quickly reset the points to ’prepare it for the second game’... But omitting the score wasn’t an accident.

Because while Lyla might have won, the score was 11 to 8. She had won by merely three points. It wasn’t how it was supposed to be like, and the hostess knew better than to rub it in.

Still, as long as she won the second game, it would be fine. The final result would then be 2 to 0 for her. And, while she wasn’t able to embarrass Felix by completely crushing him, it was still just table tennis. It wasn’t any essential skill for werewolves to have, not being good at the game didn’t make anyone any less valuable as a pack member or a potential mate...

In the end, what mattered the most in this tournament was the main prize.

Both Felix and Lyla went to their chairs to get a little rest between the games. The hostess didn’t announce when the break would end this time. Which, once again, wasn’t a mistake on her part - since it was Lyla’s match, the break would end when Lyla decided she was ready, and gave the hostess a signal. They thought that they were being discreet about it...

But everyone knew, anyway. Including Felix. Or they at least suspected that this was the case.

It was fine, though. It meant that the break could potentially be a bit longer, which would benefit Felix as well. Besides, he didn’t really need much time to rest - he just needed enough time to drink his potion water. It kicked in almost instantly, so even if Lyla were to call him back to the table after only a minute, he wouldn’t mind.

He took a last sip from the first bottle, finishing it, and reached into his bag to grab the second one...

"Huh?" 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Felix couldn’t help but pause the moment he lay his eyes down on his backpack. It looked... oddly deflated.

As if there wasn’t much inside.
