Chapter 271: Petty Cleaning

The following day was the day when the official ’talks’ with Wilder were scheduled to finally start. Felix woke up in the morning well-rested (thanks to Remi, who made sure that his ’cute little assistant’ could sleep well no matter how many worries he had on his mind), but the moment he remembered what day it was, he instantly became anxious.

The ’talks’, or ’negotiations’, or however they wanted to call it, were starting, and it seemed like his side was at a disadvantage. Even though he had Kade and the Bloodmoon Pack behind him, with Felix’s fated bond to Jared, which refused to be broken, and the remedy to the mysterious illness that was allegedly plaguing Felix’s mother’s side of the family, he had arguments to bring him back that were difficult to counter, at least for now. Of course, the Bloodmoon Pack would still be able to suppress him with their status and power... But considering the situation, with the threat of conflict with the Misty Claw Pack hanging over them, Einar and Lorelei were likely to act more reserved. Even if the Moonhill Pack was only a medium-sized pack, they didn’t need any more trouble.

And since the meeting was planned to take place over the afternoon tea, between lunch and dinner, the chances that Kade would find the opportunity to lure Wilder to the forest so that they could treat him with the truth spell were rather slim.

But life had to go on. Even if Felix was so nervous that his thoughts were all over the place, thinking and overthinking everything, he couldn’t just mull over it in his room. He had to get up, change and feed Vivi, then wash up and get dressed himself. Kade was already gone by then - he had messaged Felix early in the morning, saying that he was going to accompany Wilder for breakfast, in hopes that he might be able to find a way to take him out of the pack house again. So, Felix had to go to the dining room alone.

Which was fine, really. He was more than used to eating alone, and he got somewhat used to his current environment as well. On top of that, it was still the most peaceful time for him, in terms of ’socializing’, since his favor voucher was still unused and valid. He was glad that Kade was taking care of things that mattered, rather than needlessly accompanying him for a meal. He just ate his breakfast in peace, and returned to his room...

Where he ran into the maid.

It wouldn’t be anything unusual on its own. She came to clean every day, usually shortly around the time Felix and Kade went to the dining room for breakfast. She was a female Beta, around thirty years old, mated to one of Kade’s most dependable guards. Her whole family was loyal to Kade, she was friendly, dependable, and had absolutely no reason to scheme against Felix, or even to allow anyone else to scheme. In other words, she was perfectly fine, always just did her job, before quietly leaving the rooms. Even Felix had grown to trust her, at least as far as cleaning his room was considered.

But this time... She was doing something unusual. She was standing by the bookshelf, with a large box on the ground next to her, and a recycling bag for paper, already filled almost to the brim. When Felix had walked in, she was just in the process of wiping the empty shelves...

"I’m sorry, but what are you doing?" Felix couldn’t help but ask.

Well, he had every right to ask. It was his room, and technically his property. Most of the books he had were from Kade, and a few from Remi, but still.

"Ah, Young Master Felix," the maid, Leah, smiled at him, bowing her head. "Good morning. I am almost done, please give me a few more minutes..."

"Uh, sure, but, that’s not what I was asking about." Felix walked over, taking a glance into the recycling bag. Just as he expected, it was filled with books... The books that had been filling his shelves just this morning.

"Ah, well... About this... Young Master Kade had asked me to trash them, and replace them with new..."

"...What?"

"I don’t know," the maid shook her head, visibly embarrassed. It seemed that she also found the request confusing. "He just told me that those books were not good..."

Felix quirked his brow. He took a look at the books in the box, presumably the ones that were meant to be put on his shelves in the place of the old ones... They were all werewolf romances. Whether they were the same that Kade had originally bought him or not, Felix couldn’t tell, since he hadn’t read any of them... But they seemed very similar. At the very least, they were following the same tropes: poor, often rogue Omega, and a powerful, rich Alpha. Trying to mirror his and Kade’s situation as much as possible.

"Um, Young Master? Is it alright if I continue?"

Felix lifted his eyes to look at Leah. She was just fulfilling the orders, he didn’t want to cause her any trouble... Besides, he wasn’t really angry. Rather, he didn’t know whether to laugh or to helplessly throw his hands.

It was ridiculous. Simply ridiculous. And perhaps a little bit pitiful. Because Kade had to physically replace all those books (or, well, have their maid replace them for him)... And yes, perhaps it wasn’t much for him, since he was filthy rich. But it still required some time, money, and effort. Meanwhile, Remi could just alter it all with a spell... Felix didn’t know how complicated it was, but surely it was less work than Kade had to put into it.

He glanced at the shelves once again. All the fox romances, real and fake, were gone... But the children’s books were still in place.

So it was alright. He didn’t care about the romances, as long as those two dumbasses didn’t mess with Vivi’s things.

"Fine," he sighed, shaking his head, as he plopped down on the sofa. "Do what you must."
