Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 118: The Relationship Between Fiona Sinclair and Linden Nathan
Frances Bennett’s assistant explained patiently.
In fact, Frances had secretly asked people to deliver several letters to Linden Nathan, but it was as if he’d never received them. He never responded.
Frances didn’t know if Linden Nathan had something against her. Otherwise, in their wealthy circles, most people would at least show her some courtesy.
Since she hadn’t heard back from Linden Nathan, she had no choice but to go out and look for an opportunity herself.
After what Sharon Quincy did to her, she couldn’t just let it go. She was the type to repay every slight and would never allow herself to be played like that.
This whole joke would only be over once Sharon Quincy married Felix Hawthorne.
Just as she stepped into the cafe, Fiona Sinclair arrived right behind her with Serena Hughes in tow.
"When you see Mr. Nathan later, remember to greet him. He’s an old friend of mine, and your elder."
Fiona Sinclair’s words made Serena’s heart race.
The other day, she had followed Sharon Quincy to the hotel, only to be turned away by bodyguards the moment she reached the presidential suite’s floor. She hadn’t even gotten a glimpse of Linden Nathan.
’I can’t believe my grandmother actually knows Linden Nathan.’
"Grandma, how many years have you known Mr. Nathan?" Serena asked, looking at her grandmother with pure admiration.
Although Fiona Sinclair was nearly eighty, she looked more like a woman of sixty, full of vigor.
Especially after being reunited with her daughter and granddaughter, it was as if her grandmother had found a new purpose in life. She threw herself back into her ambitions and even looked much younger than when Serena had first met her.
"It must be about twenty years now. His father and I were classmates, so we got to know each other through him. In terms of seniority, he’s my junior. If I ask to meet him, he’ll agree out of respect for his father." Fiona Sinclair narrowed her eyes, as if lost in thought. "When we go in later, don’t say too much. From what I know, Linden Nathan only has one daughter, but his cousin has a son and a daughter. If he’s willing to act as a go-between, you might just be able to forge a connection with the Nathans of Aethelgard."
Hearing this, Serena’s eyes lit up.
Ever since her attempt to impersonate Luna was exposed, she had been desperately searching for another powerful backer to latch onto.
’If I could marry into the Nathan Family, I’d be set for generations to come.’
"Grandma, Mr. Nathan’s cousin’s son... what does he look like?" Serena asked in a low voice.
She was all about looks. If the man was ugly, she wouldn’t be able to stomach it, no matter how rich he was.
"A man’s worth isn’t in his face. As long as he has money, who cares what he looks like? With how advanced technology is these days, you’re still worried about that?" Fiona Sinclair was clearly displeased with Serena’s concern. "Don’t worry about his looks. The Nathans all have good genes. The men are handsome, and they’re good at picking wives too. From the oldest to the youngest, none of them are ugly. Sigh, I often think about how unfair life can be sometimes. It’s not enough that it opens one door for these people; it opens all of them."
Serena asked guiltily, "But that Selina Nathan... isn’t she rumored to be very ugly?"
"I met that child once when she was just a few years old. She was clever and pretty even back then, with big eyes. She couldn’t have grown up to be unattractive. The people spreading those rumors have never even met her."
Hearing this, Serena couldn’t help but feel a pang of envy toward Selina Nathan.
Before, when Sharon Quincy had claimed to be Selina Nathan, Serena thought that perhaps life was fair after all, because Sharon was so plain-looking.
But when she later found out that Sharon was just Linden Nathan’s goddaughter and that the real Selina was beautiful, it left a sour taste in her mouth.
"Oh, right. Linden Nathan said his daughter is in Korsyth as well." Thinking of his words, Fiona Sinclair sighed softly. "That child has had a hard life. She was frequently kidnapped for ransom, so she had to hide her identity and live under a different name. Linden Nathan said he’ll introduce his daughter to me in a couple of days. When that happens, you should take the opportunity to get to know her. If you two can become friends, your life will be much easier in the future."
Serena’s eyes lit up at the thought of becoming friends with Selina Nathan.
When Sharon Quincy was pretending to be Selina, Serena had wanted to suck up to her but couldn’t.
Because back then, Sharon was her rival in love.
Now, hearing that she could befriend the real Selina Nathan, Serena was completely sold on the idea.
’Who is Selina Nathan? She’s the future heir of the Nathans of Aethelgard!’
’If I become her friend, forget Aethelgard—I’d be able to do whatever I want in all of Veridia.’
At that thought, Serena’s heart began to pound violently.
"Grandma, you have to help me become good friends with Selina Nathan!" Serena pleaded, wrapping her arms around Fiona Sinclair’s. She secretly vowed that she absolutely had to befriend Selina.
Fiona Sinclair patted her hand and gave her a reassuring look. "Don’t you worry. With me here, I’ll be sure to pave the way for you."
Because her own daughter had suffered so much out in the world, Fiona Sinclair doted on her granddaughter immensely.
The fact that things with the Hawthorne Family had fallen through also made her worry even more about her granddaughter’s future.
Fortunately, Linden Nathan was now in Korsyth, which meant she could make better use of her connections.
Just as Fiona Sinclair and Serena Hughes walked in, Frances Bennett happened to spot them.
’What are they doing here?’
As far as she knew, neither Fiona Sinclair nor Serena Hughes were big coffee drinkers.
’This cafe is a Nathan Family business. Are they here to see Linden Nathan?’
Frances quickly dismissed the thought.
’Linden Nathan won’t even see me. Why would he meet with that old hag Fiona Sinclair?’
Frances took a deep breath, pulled her face mask up higher, and deliberately turned her head to look out the window as Fiona Sinclair and Serena Hughes walked past her.
The pair didn’t notice Frances and headed straight for a small booth on the other side.
An hour later, Fiona Sinclair and Serena Hughes emerged, all smiles.
"Serena, make the most of this opportunity. Mr. Nathan said his daughter will be here soon. We’ll wait in the cafe, and you can use the chance to introduce yourself."
Serena nodded excitedly.
She had met Linden Nathan. The man who had only ever appeared on social media was standing right in front of her, in the flesh.
And not only that, but Linden Nathan had also agreed to set her up with his cousin’s son.
Frances was sitting not far from them. When she heard this, she froze.
Her eyes went wide, and for a long moment, she couldn’t process it.
’Fiona Sinclair and her granddaughter actually went to see Linden Nathan?’
Frances thought she must have misheard.
What was most unbearable was that not only had Fiona taken Serena to meet Linden Nathan, but they were even planning to meet Selina Nathan.
The thought of Sharon Quincy impersonating Selina Nathan at her father’s birthday banquet left a bitter taste in Frances’s mouth.
She knew her own status was nothing in the eyes of the true upper crust, but since the Nathan Family had allowed Sharon Quincy to impersonate Selina at the banquet, it meant that in Linden Nathan’s eyes, the Hawthorne Family’s celebration was only worthy of a hastily-acknowledged goddaughter’s attendance.
