Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 133: Listen to Her Arrangements
"Married?" Hugo Grant frowned, thinking he’d misheard. "Didn’t you say you’d never get married?"
"That was before." Damian Hawthorne glanced at the woman beside him, his voice gentle. "Now, I can."
Hugo Grant’s thoughts turned to Cecilia Nathan’s identity.
"Damian, are you sure the woman in front of you is May Rhodes?"
After so many false leads, Hugo Grant felt that the real May Rhodes wouldn’t be found so easily.
First, there was Serena Hughes, and now this May Rhodes. If she was so easy to find, why were there no leads before, no matter how hard they looked?
"What, you don’t believe it?" Damian Hawthorne’s gaze sharpened. "Unlike Serena Hughes, everything about Luna checks out with the past. If she isn’t her, then no one is."
Seeing how gentle he was with May Rhodes, Hugo Grant let out a long sigh. "Alright, then. There are some things I won’t tell you. I wish you happiness."
Just as Hugo Grant was about to leave, Damian Hawthorne spoke up abruptly. "What is it? Just say it."
Hugo Grant stopped in his tracks.
His thoughts returned to Cecilia Nathan’s identity.
He and Damian Hawthorne had investigated for a long time before and could only find that Cecilia Nathan was an orphan. But now, it turned out she wasn’t an orphan at all—she was the only daughter of the Nathan Family, their sole heir.
Suddenly, Hugo Grant decided not to tell Damian Hawthorne directly.
If Damian Hawthorne knew Cecilia’s identity, he could follow the trail of clues and might uncover the real reason she had stayed by his side.
Hugo Grant lifted his gaze slightly, a starlike twinkle in his eyes. "It’s nothing."
"I heard you found Ms. Rhodes, so I just wanted to come and ask you for that answer."
With that, Hugo Grant turned and strode away.
Damian Hawthorne called out to stop him. "Hugo Grant."
Hugo Grant turned back, his gaze wavering.
"Will you treat Cecilia Nathan well?"
"I will love and respect her as I do my own life."
Hugo Grant smiled gently, a look as serene and warm as a soft breeze.
Damian Hawthorne’s expression darkened, the corners of his eyes turning red as he stared at Hugo without a word.
"’Love her as you do your own life,’ huh?" A nameless rage flared in Damian Hawthorne’s heart. "Hugo Grant, I’ve known you for so many years. How did I never know you were such an expert on love?"
Hugo Grant simply smiled, his gaze gentle, yet his eyes held an ineffable confidence and resolve. "True love transcends life itself."
Damian Hawthorne’s mind immediately flashed to Miles Sinclair.
When Miles Sinclair died, Cecilia Nathan was devastated.
And when she learned Miles Sinclair wasn’t dead, Cecilia would stop at nothing to get back to his side.
’Transcends life. Right, a love that transcends life.’
Damian Hawthorne’s fists clenched, and he slowly closed his eyes.
His chest felt as if it were caught in a vise, making it increasingly difficult to breathe.
He had only ever felt this kind of heartache once before: when he found out Luna had left him.
It was a pain that returned again and again, tormenting him at night until he could barely sleep.
Seeing Damian’s pale face, Hugo Grant decided not to say any more. He just smiled and said, "Remember to invite me to the wedding. I’ll get you a great gift."
The corner of Damian Hawthorne’s mouth twitched, and he turned his face away.
After Hugo Grant left, Damian Hawthorne stared at Cecilia Nathan’s number on his phone. He started to call several times, but hesitated each time.
Finally, Damian Hawthorne made the call.
When Cecilia Nathan answered Damian Hawthorne’s call, her voice was urgent. "What’s the news? Have you found Finn Hawthorne?"
Hearing this, Damian Hawthorne’s expression soured. "Have you forgotten what you promised me?"
"..."
"Who was it exactly that caused my eye injury?"
In truth, Damian Hawthorne didn’t actually need Cecilia to take care of him. But her concern for Finn Hawthorne stirred a dark undercurrent of jealousy in his heart.
’Finn Hawthorne is missing, and she’s actually asking me for help.’
’Meanwhile, I’m injured, and Cecilia acts as if nothing is wrong.’
"Don’t you have someone there taking care of you?" Hearing Damian Hawthorne’s indignant tone, Cecilia’s thoughts went to May Rhodes.
’That May Rhodes reeks of deception, inside and out.’
’If I weren’t so furious with Damian’s attitude, I’d expose her right now.’
"Luna is going to be very busy, so you can come take care of me."
A pain throbbed in Cecilia’s temples. "Damian Hawthorne, why don’t you hire a different caregiver..."
"Cecilia Nathan, don’t forget how my eye got injured in the first place."
"Fine, I get it." Cecilia took a deep breath, gritted her teeth, and hung up.
When Cecilia arrived at the hospital, the first person she saw was May Rhodes.
May Rhodes was sitting beside Damian Hawthorne, holding up her phone to show him something. "This designer is good," she was saying. "It’s all high-end custom work, just a bit pricier."
"Price is no object, as long as you like it." Damian Hawthorne’s voice was so gentle it seemed to drip with affection.
"Then let’s go with this one. When your eye is a little better, we can go for a fitting together."
May Rhodes blushed, and her eyes darted around. Spotting Cecilia, she quickly put her phone away. "Miss Cecilia Nathan, you’re here."
Compared to their last encounter, May Rhodes’s attitude had done a complete one-eighty.
"With everything going on with Damian and me, I’m going to be very busy, so I’ll have to rely on you for now."
May Rhodes didn’t specify why she’d be busy, but her tone was apologetic. "I’d feel better if I could take care of Damian myself, but he’s worried I’ll get exhausted... In any case, I’m leaving him in your hands."
’Worried she’ll get exhausted...’
Cecilia’s lip twitched.
’No wonder Damian called me over. So, May Rhodes is already tired after just one night of looking after him.’
’Damian dotes on her so much. His love for her must run deep.’
Cecilia set her toiletries aside and gave a faint smile. "It’s fine. I owe him this."
’If I hadn’t insisted on trying that mountain bike, Damian wouldn’t have gotten hurt.’
’More than my own inconvenience, I don’t want anything to happen to Damian’s eye.’
"Then I’ll leave him to you." After speaking, May Rhodes handed her a sheet of paper covered in dense writing. "These are the instructions for taking care of Damian. Please follow them exactly."
Cecilia glanced at it and saw it was a schedule.
It was packed solid, from six in the morning to nine at night.
Cecilia scoffed quietly and didn’t take it.
She planned to "take good care" of Damian Hawthorne, but she had no intention of following May Rhodes’s orders and acting like a "model caregiver."
"Sorry, I can’t meet the requirements you’ve listed here," Cecilia refused flatly.
’This May Rhodes is something else,’ she thought. ’She’s been treating me like a workhorse from the very beginning.’
"Damian, if Miss Cecilia Nathan can’t do it, then let’s just hire a professional caregiver. We can’t afford any more mistakes when it comes to your eye." May Rhodes’s voice was filled with concern for Damian.
Damian Hawthorne glanced at the paper, then said to Cecilia, "Didn’t you say you were going to take good care of me? Luna’s right; she’s a professional when it comes to nursing. If you want my eye to heal faster, you’ll follow Luna’s instructions."
Cecilia was so angry she felt her breath catch in her throat.
’Right. "Follow Luna’s instructions."’
