Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 149: Identity, Exposed
"Finn Hawthorne is dead. Does that give you a guilty conscience?" Cecilia Nathan took a step toward Sharon Quincy, and Sharon took a step back.
"What guilty conscience? Finn and I were good friends. Of course I’d come to pay my respects now that he’s passed away. How does that mean I have a guilty conscience?"
Sharon Quincy’s tone turned cold, even a little aggressive.
"Aren’t you afraid that Finn will visit you in your dreams every night?"
Cecilia’s words struck a nerve.
The thought of Finn Hawthorne demanding her life in a dream made Sharon Quincy’s face turn pale.
’She wasn’t afraid of the living, but the dead? Who wasn’t afraid of the dead!’
"What are you trying to say?" Sharon Quincy pressed her lips together.
"You know how Finn Hawthorne died."
The one who spoke was Damian Hawthorne. He stared coldly at Sharon Quincy, his statement not a question, but an assertion.
Sharon Quincy turned her face away. "I don’t know what you’re talking about. Didn’t the police say it was a suicide? Everyone knows that. After all, he was... by those men..."
SMACK! Cecilia Nathan swung her hand and slapped her across the face.
Sharon Quincy was stunned.
Sharon Quincy clutched her face, her lips trembling. Her teeth chattered from the pain. "Selina Nathan, why did you hit me? Are you crazy?"
"Because you deserved it." Cecilia raised her chin and sneered. "Don’t think you can do whatever you want just because my dad protects you. I’m keeping a record of everything you had people do to Finn. His death doesn’t mean your crimes can just be wiped away."
"What does that have to do with me?" Filled with rage, Sharon Quincy raised her hand to strike back, but her wrist was seized. She cried out, "Ah!" in sudden pain.
Damian Hawthorne flung her hand away. Sharon Quincy staggered, nearly falling.
"Miss Quincy, are you perhaps unfamiliar with the law? What you’ve done is enough to land you in prison for several years."
"What does what those men did have to do with me?" Sharon Quincy suddenly found her confidence.
Walter Wallace had said that as long as she kept her mouth shut, he would take full responsibility.
In truth, she knew everything Walter Wallace had done, because she knew him well enough.
The factory Finn Hawthorne went to before the incident was a place Walter Wallace often used for his dirty work. Finn’s death was definitely connected to Walter.
If Walter Wallace had implicated her, she would have used Finn Hawthorne’s death against him. But since Walter had shouldered all the blame, she had to keep her promise and save his life.
’As long as I refuse to talk, no one can do anything to me.’
"Miss Quincy is certainly tight-lipped." Damian Hawthorne gestured to the doorway, and several men dressed as bodyguards walked toward Sharon Quincy.
"What do you think you’re doing?" Sharon Quincy trembled, her voice changing.
"Inviting you to be a guest at our home." Damian Hawthorne’s lips curved into a smirk, a roguish look tinged with a chilling coldness.
Sharon Quincy slowly backed away, biting her lower lip hard. She turned to look at Cecilia. "Miss Nathan, if your father knew you were treating me like this, he’d be angry."
"He’s been angry with me for years. One more day won’t matter." Cecilia’s lips curved upward, but the smile didn’t reach her eyes.
Just then, several bodyguards in black suits entered. Seeing the tense standoff, the lead bodyguard walked up to Cecilia and said, "Miss, President Nathan told us to ensure Miss Sharon’s safety. Could you please... be accommodating and let me take Miss Sharon away?"
"So, are you here to protect her safety, or mine?" After speaking, Cecilia pulled a small knife from her pocket and began toying with it casually.
Seeing the sharp Swiss Army knife, the black-suited bodyguard instantly fell silent.
’Although Miss Quincy is President Nathan’s goddaughter, she was, after all, only adopted as one later on.’
’Between Selina Nathan and Sharon Quincy, the former is of course more important.’
Seeing that Linden Nathan’s men weren’t moving, Damian Hawthorne’s bodyguards quickly hustled Sharon Quincy into a car.
Sharon Quincy wanted to scream, but the bodyguards were twisting her arms so painfully that she could only let out a shriek as she was forced into the car.
As Cecilia left, she patted the black-suited bodyguard’s shoulder. "Good job. You’ll get a raise next month."
The black-suited bodyguard gave a bitter smile.
’A raise? It’ll be a win if President Nathan doesn’t fire me.’
After Sharon Quincy was taken away by Cecilia Nathan and Damian Hawthorne, the bodyguard immediately contacted Linden Nathan.
On the other end of the line, Linden Nathan’s voice rose sharply. "What did you say? Sharon was taken?"
"She was dragged away..." the bodyguard hesitated for a moment before sighing. "Miss Nathan pulled out a sharp knife. I was afraid she might get hurt, so I had to give up Miss Sharon."
Linden Nathan was silent for a moment before speaking. "A lot has happened to Cecilia recently. You did well. You must ensure Cecilia’s safety at all times."
’Sharon might be important, but ultimately, she’s not as important as my own daughter.’
Thinking of Cecilia’s willful nature, Linden Nathan sighed.
’Children are a debt to be paid. Ever since Cecilia’s mother passed away, I planned on being a single father for life.’
’But Cecilia never listened to my plans. In middle school, she was deceived by that punk Miles Sinclair, and later she was deceived by that punk Damian Hawthorne.’
"President Nathan, the young miss’s identity was exposed at the funeral." The bodyguard decided to report what he had observed and overheard.
’As a bodyguard, I should never gossip. But Cecilia’s situation concerns everyone in the Nathan Family. I can’t hide it, nor do I dare to.’
"Exposed?" Linden Nathan’s voice changed completely. "How was it exposed? How many people know?"
The bodyguard narrowed his eyes, recalling the scene. "About five or six people know... And members of the Sinclair Family were there too. I’m afraid the young miss’s identity can’t be hidden any longer."
"Get more people to protect her immediately!" Linden Nathan panicked. "How could you let this happen? How could you let her identity be exposed?"
The bodyguard was about to say that Sharon Quincy was the one who did it, but Linden Nathan suddenly spoke, cutting him off. "I have another call coming in. I’ll take it first. I’ll call you back later."
As soon as he finished speaking, he hung up.
Several cars were parked outside the Hawthorne family’s villa.
The streetlights were bright. In the dark of the night, Sharon Quincy was dragged out of the car, a hand clamped over her mouth.
Cecilia Nathan and Damian Hawthorne walked ahead while Sharon Quincy was wrestled into the house.
CLANG! The main door shut. A forceful push sent Sharon Quincy stumbling to the floor.
"Speak. What deal did you make with Walter Wallace?" Cecilia sat in a chair, her tone icy.
At the police station, Walter Wallace was keeping his mouth shut, insisting he was solely responsible for the car crash and that no one else was involved.
Although Walter Wallace’s actions constituted attempted murder, no one had actually died. And since Sharon Quincy had signed a settlement agreement, Walter would be out in a few years.
If he got his sentence reduced, he would suffer almost no loss at all.
Sharon Quincy sneered. "I didn’t make a deal with him. He tried to kill me. What kind of deal could I possibly have with him?"
"He tried to kill you, yet you signed the settlement agreement." Cecilia’s voice was light, but her words were like a slap to Sharon Quincy’s face. "You forgave a man who wanted you dead. That could only happen if he offered you something even better in return."
