Chapter 157: Chapter 157: Sowing Discord

The uncle in question was none other than Linden Nathan.

The Nathans of Aethelgard were renowned throughout the business world, so Mona Nathan couldn’t understand why Serena Hughes had such poor judgment.

If Serena Hughes hadn’t known Cecilia Nathan’s identity, she might have shown Mona some courtesy. But when compared to Cecilia, of course Serena would switch sides in a heartbeat.

Mona Nathan didn’t understand the real reason behind it; she only felt humiliated by Serena Hughes.

"They really treated you like that?" Mona Nathan’s father was also taken aback.

Mona Nathan’s father ran one of the companies under the Nathan Group. While he was no match for Linden Nathan, he still held considerable prestige in the business world. Anyone who knew what was what would treat Mona a little better, just to show him some respect.

"Yes! And there was this girl, Cecilia Nathan. She has no background whatsoever, yet she dared to lead the charge in bullying me! Dad, you have to teach them a good lesson for me," Mona Nathan whined pitifully.

"Cecilia Nathan?" Mona Nathan’s father mulled over the name. "Why does that sound so similar to Selina Nathan...?"

"It’s a different name," Mona Nathan cut her father off. But then she remembered the sales associate mentioning "the bag reserved by Miss Nathan" and recalled Serena Hughes’s attitude. Her eye twitched. "Dad," she asked, startled, "you don’t think this Cecilia Nathan... could actually be my cousin, Selina Nathan, do you?"

...

Meanwhile, Serena Hughes was eagerly tagging along behind Cecilia Nathan and Chloe Sutton.

Chloe Sutton glanced at Serena Hughes and said to Cecilia Nathan, "What’s with her? It’s like she’s lost her mind."

Chloe Sutton had noticed Serena Hughes’s change in attitude toward Cecilia Nathan for a while now.

Serena Hughes used to treat Cecilia Nathan like an enemy, but now she was fawning all over her. It was like she was a completely different person.

Cecilia Nathan gave a wry smile. Thinking of her identity, she was about to say something when they came face-to-face with Sharon Quincy.

The moment Sharon Quincy saw Cecilia Nathan, she remembered the "hardship" she’d endured at the Hawthorne estate, and hatred flooded her heart.

She had been trying to find time to visit Walter Wallace for the past few days, but the police refused, telling her she was also a suspect.

Sharon Quincy knew Cecilia Nathan and Damian Hawthorne had made their move.

They were determined to put her behind bars.

Seeing Chloe Sutton’s surprised expression as she looked at Serena Hughes, Sharon Quincy’s brow furrowed. A suspicion began to form in her mind.

"Miss Sutton, aren’t you curious why Serena Hughes is sucking up to your friend so much?"

Sharon Quincy, dressed head-to-toe in a classic tweed suit and carrying an Hermès bag, looked insufferably smug.

"Sharon Quincy, what kind of trouble are you trying to stir up now?" Cecilia Nathan had a bad feeling the moment she saw her.

These days, Sharon Quincy had the reckless attitude of someone with nothing to lose. Especially after Cecilia had a falling out with Linden Nathan, Sharon became even more fixated on trying to win his favor.

"I’m not trying to stir up trouble. I just feel sorry for your friend, being kept in the dark by you all these years." Sharon Quincy gestured toward Serena Hughes, then crossed her arms and smirked at Chloe Sutton. "Even Serena Hughes knows your friend’s true identity, but you don’t. It’s obvious Cecilia Nathan has never really considered you her friend."

As Sharon Quincy spoke, Chloe Sutton’s expression faltered for a moment.

Cecilia said nervously, "Chloe, I..."

"Miss Sutton, I bet you have no idea who your best friend really is, do you? The truth is, she’s not poor at all. She’s just been pretending all these years. While you thought you were helping her make ends meet, she was probably laughing at you behind your back."

After saying her piece, Sharon Quincy saw Chloe Sutton’s expression turn complicated, just as she’d expected.

’I was right. Cecilia really didn’t tell Chloe her true identity.’

Chloe Sutton looked at Sharon Quincy and asked in a low voice, "What exactly is Cecilia’s identity?"

"Her? She’s Selina Nathan. The biological daughter of the richest man in the country."

Chloe Sutton trembled, staring at her best friend as if seeing a stranger.

Cecilia closed her eyes and nodded. "She’s right. I am Selina Nathan... But I don’t think this identity is anything to be proud of."

"Not proud? Then why hide it from your friend for so many years? At the end of the day, you never really saw Chloe as a friend, did you..." It seemed the fire wasn’t burning hot enough for Sharon Quincy, so she decided to add more fuel.

Chloe Sutton took a deep breath, looked at Cecilia’s anxious face, and parted her lips. "You’re right. That identity really isn’t anything to be proud of."

Cecilia’s gaze fell, and her lips pressed into a thin line.

"The only reason you didn’t tell me is because you were afraid of bringing me danger and trouble." Chloe’s words were like a warm current flowing straight into Cecilia’s heart.

Sharon Quincy’s heart skipped. Just as she was about to say something, Chloe continued:

"So, is our family’s recent good fortune because the Sinclairs found out about your identity? I can’t believe I’m friends with the daughter of the richest man in the country! What kind of luck is this!" Chloe exclaimed, excitedly hugging Cecilia. "Cecilia, you were right not to tell me! If you’d told me sooner, I would’ve been too intimidated to even approach you. But now that I know, my family has totally hit the jackpot!"

Chloe’s reaction made Sharon Quincy turn pale. "You... Miss Sutton, you’re not angry that your friend hid this from you? She kept it a secret because she didn’t want you to take advantage of her status..."

"What a load of absolute bullshit!" Chloe couldn’t stop herself from cursing. "My Cecilia is nothing like the person you’re describing."

As a television host, she was usually very mindful of her tone and elocution; this was the first time she had ever cursed at someone so crudely.

Sharon Quincy’s face turned deathly pale from the scolding.

"I’ve seen your kind of pathetic attempt to sow discord a million times. I don’t care if Cecilia is the richest man’s daughter; even if she were the daughter of a beggar or a murderer, she’d still be my best friend." Chloe’s lips curled into a cold smile. "Besides, now that she’s suddenly so wealthy, and my friend is rich, I can’t be far behind. Sharon Quincy, did you really think a few little words could drive a wedge between me and Cecilia? I guess all those years of schooling went to waste on you."

After Chloe finished, Serena Hughes, who had been watching the drama unfold from the sidelines, couldn’t help but shoot Sharon Quincy a pitying glance.

’Cecilia could casually gift Chloe a bag worth millions. How could a bond like that ever be broken by Sharon Quincy’s petty instigation?’

Sharon Quincy knew she wasn’t going to win this fight. She was about to leave when Chloe blocked her path and snatched her purse.

"You bought this with the money the Nathans of Aethelgard sponsored you with, didn’t you? Oops. Cecilia is my friend, so I’ll be repossessing that sponsorship on her behalf."

With that, Chloe reached out and ripped the necklace right off Sharon Quincy’s neck.

Sharon Quincy frantically clutched at her neck, but Chloe’s hands were too fast. In seconds, she had stripped Sharon of everything valuable.

"This is robbery!" Sharon Quincy shrieked. She’d never experienced anything like this.

Even Cecilia was surprised by how fast Chloe moved, but she didn’t try to stop her.

"I’m calling the police! I’m calling the police! Chloe Sutton, you’re a public figure, for god’s sake! How can you rob someone in broad daylight?" Sharon had never been in a situation like this. The robbery was so blatant that she was at a loss for how to fight back.

Sharon Quincy pulled out her phone to call the police, but Chloe just waggled her own phone in the air. "Go ahead. Call them. I happened to record every word you just said to sow discord. Let’s go to the police station together. It’ll be a perfect opportunity for Linden Nathan to see your true colors."
