Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 160: Is This Still That Poor Student?
"Cecilia, must you really do this?" Linden Nathan could see that Cecilia was threatening him with the shares.
If he insisted on giving Sharon Quincy the shares, then Cecilia would rather have none at all.
"I could give her the shares. But even if I did, would she dare to take them?" Thinking of everything Sharon Quincy had done, the corners of Cecilia Nathan’s mouth lifted, but the smile didn’t reach her eyes.
Linden Nathan frowned and glanced at Sharon Quincy.
Sharon Quincy’s heart lurched, and she quickly explained, "Godfather, maybe... maybe we should forget about the shares..."
Just then, the sound of police sirens rose from downstairs.
Linden Nathan glanced out the window, but Cecilia Nathan had already started to laugh aloud.
"Wh-what are you laughing at?" Hearing the noise from downstairs, Sharon Quincy broke out in a cold sweat.
She had a feeling that something was very off about Cecilia today.
When she heard the sirens, Sharon Quincy’s mind went blank.
’Could something have happened to Walter Wallace?’
After learning about Cecilia Nathan and Damian Hawthorne’s plan, she had gone to see Walter Wallace the very next day, but the police had refused her request, saying they were too busy.
If Walter Wallace couldn’t see her, he probably couldn’t see anyone else either.
She and Walter Wallace had agreed to stick to their stories no matter what; that way, no one could do anything to them.
A few minutes later, the police were at the door.
"Is Sharon Quincy here?"
Seeing the police, Linden Nathan’s expression stiffened. "She’s here. What is this...?"
"We’re from the Korsyth Police Department. Sharon Quincy is a person of interest in a homicide case we are currently investigating. We need her to come with us."
Looking at the officers outside, Linden Nathan’s lips moved. "Officers, could there be some kind of misunderstanding...?"
"I know, it was Cecilia!" Sharon Quincy glared at Cecilia. "You called the police."
"All that talk about giving me half the shares and making me sign papers... so your real goal was to call the police. To have them arrest me, to humiliate me!"
"If you haven’t done anything to feel guilty about, then I’d be filing a false report, and the police would arrest me. But clearly, that’s not the case. Sharon Quincy, you should just cooperate with the officers." Cecilia Nathan sat leisurely in her chair, turning a deaf ear to the commotion.
"Officers, I’m Linden Nathan. We can talk about this, whatever it is..." Seeing the police arrive in such force, Linden Nathan knew this matter couldn’t be kept quiet.
This was a branch office of the Nathan Family’s company. With so many people coming and going, the news would have already spread.
"Mr. Nathan, I know you’ve made significant contributions to the country and society, and I know Sharon Quincy is your goddaughter. However, Walter Wallace has given a full confession about the crime he conspired to commit with Sharon Quincy. We need to take her to the station for questioning. I hope you can understand." After speaking, the officer walked over to Sharon Quincy.
Hearing the name "Walter Wallace," Sharon Quincy trembled all over.
"Walter Wallace... What did he say?" Sharon Quincy was still in disbelief.
She had clearly made an agreement with Walter Wallace. No one was supposed to say anything. Why did he talk?
Sharon Quincy whipped her head toward Cecilia Nathan, her frantic gaze colliding unexpectedly with Cecilia’s calm one.
"It was you... What did you say to Walter Wallace? What on earth did you say to him?! You threatened him, didn’t you? Didn’t you?! You threatened him into framing me?" Sharon Quincy lunged at Cecilia, her eyes red with rage. She reached out to grab Cecilia, but Linden Nathan frowned and quickly stepped in front of her.
"Sharon, calm down!" It was the first time Linden Nathan had ever seen Sharon so out of control.
In his memory, Sharon had always been quiet and gentle, doing everything with a soft touch. She rarely had moments where she broke down or became hysterical like this.
Recalling the moment just now when she had reached out to grab Cecilia, a wave of fear washed over Linden Nathan.
’Sharon was actually going to hurt Cecilia just now...’
"I can’t calm down!" Sharon Quincy trembled with rage. She pointed at Cecilia and wailed, "It’s her! It’s all her! She must have said something to Walter Wallace! Walter already told the police it had nothing to do with me! She’ll do anything to get me thrown in jail."
"Godfather, you have to help me! It’s all Cecilia, she’s the one behind this! I didn’t do anything." Seeing the police officers, Sharon Quincy suddenly panicked.
If they didn’t have solid evidence, these officers wouldn’t have come for her.
Sharon Quincy pinned all her hopes on Linden Nathan.
She knew that right now, only Linden Nathan could help her.
Watching Sharon Quincy, a mess of tears and snot, Linden Nathan’s face darkened.
"Sharon, just go with the officers for now. After they’ve investigated, Godfather will figure out a way to help you."
Linden Nathan was starting to see that something was fishy.
What Sharon Quincy had said before might not have been the truth.
The police don’t just arrest people for no reason. If Sharon Quincy had really committed a crime, he couldn’t possibly cover for her, let alone use money to bail her out.
If Sharon Quincy was a law-abiding citizen, giving her some benefits was harmless. But if she crossed a line, the Nathan Family wouldn’t have anything more to do with her.
Hearing Linden Nathan’s formal tone, Sharon Quincy’s face went pale. For the first time, she felt true fear.
Linden Nathan was starting to doubt her.
It made sense. The police were here; what reason was there not to be suspicious?
"Godfather, I can’t go to jail! Please, Godfather, help me!" Sharon Quincy grabbed Linden Nathan’s sleeve.
Seeing her prosthetic limb exposed, Linden Nathan frowned and sighed. "Sharon, we need to cooperate with the officers. Don’t worry, if you haven’t done anything wrong, Godfather’s previous promises to you still stand."
With that, he pulled his arm free from her grasp and gave the police a look.
The officers nodded at Linden Nathan and were about to lead her away when several people dressed as uniformed attendants, accompanied by a few bodyguards, walked over carrying cases.
"Excuse me, is Miss Sharon Quincy here? This is the jewelry you ordered."
After they spoke, they opened the jewelry boxes. Seeing the dazzling array of jewels, the police officers exchanged glances, their expressions souring.
"Sharon Quincy, what’s the meaning of this? You’re not planning on bribing someone, are you?" Cecilia Nathan laughed.
’Spending money so freely before she’s even gotten the shares. That’s Sharon Quincy for you.’
Just then, an attendant took out a card machine. "Who will be paying for this?"
The attendant felt a little nervous seeing the police. ’Could this really be to bribe the police?’
’So blatant, right out in the open! How brazen!’
Linden Nathan frowned. "How much?"
"Thirty-eight million."
"Thirty-eight million?" Cecilia scoffed. "Sharon Quincy, where did you get the money to buy such expensive jewelry?"
"I really envy how you can spend money like that." The sarcastic comment made Sharon Quincy’s face flush with embarrassment.
Linden Nathan’s brows knitted tightly.
He had given Sharon Quincy a credit card with no limit. He thought she would only buy some clothes or bags, but he never imagined she could spend this much.
Linden Nathan glanced at Sharon Quincy’s outfit and only then realized that her clothes and shoes, from head to toe, were all from top-tier luxury brands.
’Is this still the same college student who worked part-time to pay her way through school and said she would repay her debt to him in the future?’
It’s easy to go from frugal to lavish, but hard to go from lavish back to frugal. Now that Sharon Quincy had tasted the pleasure of spending money like water, could she ever go back?
"Mr. Nathan, thank you for your cooperation. We’ll be taking Sharon Quincy now."
Only then did the officers speak up and forcibly lead Sharon Quincy away.
Watching them leave, Cecilia Nathan turned to go. As she passed Linden Nathan, he called out to her, "Cecilia..."
His somber voice held a trace of guilt.
"Sharon... what did she really do?"
Linden Nathan still couldn’t believe Sharon Quincy would turn into this kind of person.
Seeing Linden Nathan’s flustered expression, Cecilia’s heart felt like it was bound in chains.
Her father, a man who commanded the business world, was defeated by a mere shred of familial warmth.
