'I'm the Villain, But the System Made Me OP'-Chapter 11: Storm Clouds Gathering
Chapter 11: Storm Clouds Gathering
[STORY ARC BEGINS: "Academy Conflict & Dungeon Trials"]
Monday morning brought trouble.
Draven walked into the academy’s main hall and immediately sensed something wrong. Students clustered in groups. Whispering. Shooting glances his direction.
[System, what’s going on?]
[Checking... OH. Oh no. Someone talked.]
"What?"
[Rumor spreading: You defeated three B-Rank students in the training grounds yesterday. Except you didn’t train yesterday. Someone’s spreading false intel to paint a target on your back.]
Draven’s eyes narrowed. [Who?]
[Three guesses. Starts with ’Crown’ and ends with ’manipulative bastard Prince.’]
In Advanced Combat Theory class, Professor Astrid made an announcement.
"The annual Dungeon Expedition is in two weeks." She wrote on the board: RUINS OF VELKARI - B-RANK DUNGEON. "Teams of five. Mixed year levels. The academy will assign groups based on compatibility and skill balance."
Whispers erupted.
Velkari Ruins were legendary. High risk. High reward. Ancient magic artifacts. Rare monster cores. But also: 40% casualty rate historically.
"Team assignments will be posted Friday," Astrid continued. "This expedition is mandatory for all B-Rank students. Refusal means expulsion."
Draven felt eyes on him. He was B-Rank now. Meant he was going.
After class, Astrid pulled him aside.
"Draven, a word." Her professional tone. Not lover mode.
They walked to an empty corridor.
"The team assignments are being manipulated," she said quietly. "Crown Prince Aldric is pressuring the headmaster. He wants you placed with..." She paused. "Hostile teammates. Students loyal to him."
"To get me killed in the dungeon."
"Exactly. Accidental death. No witnesses. Clean."
Draven leaned against the wall. Thought. "Can you counter it?"
"I can try. But my influence only goes so far. Aldric has the royal family backing him." Astrid looked worried. Actually worried. "This is serious, Draven. B-Rank dungeons kill experienced teams. With sabotage..." She didn’t finish.
"I’ll handle it."
"How?"
"By being too valuable to kill. If my team needs me to survive, they won’t betray me." Draven smiled. Dark. "And if they try, I’ll make sure they regret it."
Astrid kissed him quick. Gentle. "Be careful."
"Always."
Lunchtime. The academy courtyard.
Draven sat with Seraphina and Lyra. Casual. Normal.
Then HE appeared.
Crown Prince Aldric Valtheris.
Tall. Golden hair. Handsome in that classical prince way. Blue eyes that looked friendly but weren’t. B-Rank Peak Stage. Age twenty-two. Charismatic. Beloved by the masses.
And absolutely rotten inside.
"Draven Arclight." Aldric’s voice carried. Other students turned to watch. "I’ve been hearing interesting things about you."
Draven looked up. Bored expression. "Your Highness. To what do I owe the honor?"
"Straight to the point. I like that." Aldric sat uninvited. His two bodyguards flanked him. Both A-Rank. "You’ve changed recently. From failure to... whatever you are now. B-Rank in weeks. Seducing the Ice Princess." He glanced at Seraphina. She stiffened. "Quite the transformation."
"People evolve."
"Or they cheat." Aldric’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. "I’m simply curious how a third-rate noble suddenly becomes academy star."
"Hard work."
"Hmm. Or perhaps..." Aldric leaned forward. "...something less savory. Forbidden techniques. Demonic pacts. The kind of thing that warrants investigation."
Threat. Thinly veiled.
Draven met his gaze. Didn’t blink. "If you have accusations, make them formally. Otherwise, you’re wasting my lunch break."
Tension crackled.
Aldric’s smile widened. "No accusations. Just... friendly concern. After all, the dungeon expedition is dangerous. Accidents happen. I’d hate for something unfortunate to befall you."
"I’m sure you would."
"Do be careful, Draven Arclight. The ruins have claimed many promising students." Aldric stood. "It would be tragic if you joined them."
He left. His guards following.
Seraphina exhaled. "He just threatened you. Publicly."
"Yep."
"Why?" Lyra’s hand rested on her dagger. Hidden under the table. "What did you do to him?"
"Exist. And I’m courting you two. Aldric wants Seraphina for political marriage. He sees me as competition."
Seraphina’s face paled. "My father mentioned the proposal. I refused. But if Aldric pushes hard enough, Father might not have a choice."
Politics. Always politics.
"Don’t worry," Draven said. "Aldric won’t be a problem much longer."
"You can’t fight a prince," Seraphina hissed. "He has A-Rank guards. Royal backing. The church supports him. You’d be crushed."
"Who said anything about fighting? I’m a villain, remember? Villains don’t fight fair. We scheme."
[QUEST UNLOCKED: "The Crown Prince’s Downfall - Part 1"]
[Objective: Survive the dungeon expedition. Expose Aldric’s sabotage.]
[Reward: 5,000 VP, Information Skill Upgrade, Political Leverage]
[Failure: Death. Obviously.]
Later that afternoon, Draven sought out Kai Solis.
Found him in the training yard. Practicing sword forms. Surprisingly good. D-Rank but fighting above his level.
Protagonist halo at work.
"Kai. Got a minute?"
Kai stopped. Wary. "What do you want?"
"To talk. About the dungeon expedition."
"What about it?"
"You’re D-Rank. High stage. Close to C-Rank. You’ll be assigned to a D-Rank dungeon team. Safer. Easier. Good training."
"So?"
"So I’m offering you a spot on my B-Rank team instead."
Kai blinked. "What? Why would you—that makes no sense. It’s way more dangerous."
"Because B-Rank dungeons have better rewards. Better experience. You want to get stronger fast? This is how."
"And you want me because...?"
"Because I need someone I can trust. Someone who won’t stab me in the back when things get bad." Draven met his eyes. "The Crown Prince is sabotaging my team. Packing it with his loyalists. I need people who’ll actually fight beside me, not against me."
Kai processed this. "You’re asking me to betray the prince?"
"I’m asking you to survive. Aldric doesn’t care about you. You’re a commoner. Disposable. But if you’re on my team, I’ll make sure you come back alive. And strong."
"Why should I trust you?"
"Because I defended you when those noble brats tried to bully you. Because I could’ve humiliated you in our duel but chose not to. Because despite my reputation, I’ve never actually wronged you." Draven extended his hand. "Your choice. Safe D-Rank dungeon with mediocre rewards, or risky B-Rank with me. High risk, high reward."
Kai stared at the hand. Internal struggle visible.
Then he took it. Firm grip.
"Fine. But if you betray me, I’ll kill you myself."
"Deal."
[Kai Solis Status: Wary Ally → Temporary Teammate]
[Protagonist is joining YOUR party. This changes the original novel’s trajectory significantly!]
That evening, Draven gathered his real allies.
His room. Privacy barrier active.
Present: Seraphina, Lyra, Astrid, and Kai (who looked uncomfortable being in a room with three beautiful women and a villain).
"Dungeon expedition in two weeks," Draven started. "Crown Prince wants me dead. He’s rigging my team. So I’m building my own. You four, plus me. That’s five. Perfect team size."
"I already requested to be on your team," Astrid said. "As your combat instructor, it’s justifiable. Approved."
"I’m going," Seraphina stated. No room for argument.
"Me too," Lyra added. "Someone needs to watch your back."
Kai shifted. "I still don’t understand why you’re helping me."
"Because you’re useful. And because having the protagonist on my side is better than having him as an enemy."
"I’m not the protagonist of anything."
"Sure you’re not." Draven pulled out a map. "Velkari Ruins. Seven floors. Boss on each. B-Rank difficulty starts at floor three. We need strategy."
He spread the map on the table.
"Floor One: Undead. Low-level. Easy. Warm-up." His finger moved. "Floor Two: Traps and puzzles. Requires brain, not brawn. Floor Three: Elemental golems. High defense. We’ll need coordinated attacks."
"Floor Four?" Seraphina asked.
"Unknown. Records show high casualty rate. Most teams don’t make it past three."
"And we’re going to Four?" Kai’s voice cracked slightly.
"We’re going to Seven. The bottom. Where the real treasure is."
"That’s insane."
"That’s winning." Draven looked at each of them. "I don’t do mediocre. We’re going all the way. But I need to know what you can do. Full capabilities. No secrets." 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
Astrid went first.
"A-Rank. Arcane specialist. Offensive spells, barriers, wide-area effects. Weak in close combat."
Seraphina next.
"B-Rank High Stage. Ice magic. Crowd control. Support capabilities. Decent melee with ice blade conjuration."
Lyra.
"B-Rank Mid Stage. Assassination techniques. Poison. Stealth. Close combat specialist. Weak against multiple enemies."
Kai hesitated.
Then: "D-Rank High Stage. But my mana core is... weird. It glows gold sometimes. When I’m in danger, my power spikes. I don’t control it yet."
SSS-Rank potential awakening. Of course.
Draven nodded. "Good. I’m B-Rank Peak. Dark and spatial magic. Close to mid-range combat. High mobility. I’ll be vanguard."
"That’s not a balanced team," Kai pointed out. "Too many damage dealers. Not enough defense."
"I have plans for that." Draven looked at Astrid. "Can you teach us formation tactics? Two weeks isn’t much but—"
"I can drill the basics. Formation Alpha through Delta. Should be enough."
"Do it. We train every evening. No exceptions."
"What about the other students?" Seraphina asked. "The ones Aldric plants on the team?"
"We’ll deal with them when it happens. Either they cooperate or..." Draven’s smile was dark. "...dungeons are dangerous places. Accidents happen."
Silence.
"You’re serious," Kai said quietly. "You’d kill them."
"If they try to kill me first? Absolutely." Draven met his eyes. "This is survival, Kai. Nobility plays by different rules. Either adapt or die."
Kai looked away. Uncomfortable. But didn’t argue.
[Team Formation: Complete]
"One more thing," Draven said. "We’re using the Harem Bond Network for coordination."
"The what?" Kai asked.
"A skill I have. Connects party members emotionally. Lets us sense each other’s status in combat."
"That’s... actually incredibly useful for dungeons."
"It also means," Lyra added with a grin, "that you’ll feel it when Draven fucks one of us."
Kai choked. "WHAT?!"
"Privacy mode exists," Draven said quickly. "I’ll keep it on."
"YOU BETTER!" Kai’s face was red. "I don’t want to feel— I mean— that’s—"
Seraphina patted his shoulder. "You’ll get used to it. We’re all connected to Draven... intimately."
"Oh god, I’m in a harem party. I’m the token normal guy in a harem party." Kai put his face in his hands. "How is this my life?"
"Could be worse," Astrid said cheerfully. "You could be the villain."
"I AM working with the villain! This is worse!"
Everyone laughed.
Even Kai, eventually.
After the meeting dispersed, Draven checked the System.
[Host, I’ve been analyzing data. The Crown Prince is just a distraction.]
"What do you mean?"
[Velkari Ruins. The dungeon. It shouldn’t be opening now. In the original novel, it opened in six months. Someone accelerated the timeline.]
"Who?"
[Unknown. But whoever did it has serious power. A-Rank minimum. And they want people IN that dungeon specifically now.]
"Why?"
[The seventh floor. According to my records, it contains something called the ’Abyss Core.’ A legendary artifact. In the wrong hands...let’s just say it’s bad news.]
"And in the right hands?"
[Could make you S-Rank instantly. Or kill you. 50/50 chance.]
Draven smiled. "I like those odds."
[Of course you do. You’re insane.]
"That’s why you picked me."
[Fair point.]
A knock at the door interrupted.
Draven opened it. Elise stood there. His mother. Looking worried.
"I heard about the dungeon expedition," she said. "And the rumors. About Aldric."
"I’m handling it."
"Draven, he’s dangerous. His father, the king, would let him get away with murder if it served political purposes." She stepped inside. "Promise me you’ll be careful."
"I promise."
She hugged him. Tight. "I can’t lose you. Not after just finding you again."
Draven held her. [Privacy mode on.] "You won’t lose me. I’m too stubborn to die."
"That’s not reassuring."
"It’s honest."
She pulled back. Looked at him. Then kissed him. Soft. Brief.
"I love you," Elise whispered. "Come back alive."
"Always."
She left.
Draven stood at the window. Looked out at the academy grounds. Moonlight made everything look peaceful.
But storms were coming.
The Crown Prince. The dungeon. Whatever manipulated the timeline. Threats piling up.
Good.
Draven grinned.
"Let them come. I’ll crush them all."
[DING! ADVANCEMENT DETECTED!]
[Your resolve has strengthened. Core responding.]
[RANK UP: B-Rank (Peak Stage) → A-Rank (Low Stage)!]
[ACHIEVEMENT: Youngest A-Rank in Academy History!]
[New Skills Unlocked!]
[+10,000 VP (Rank Advancement Bonus)]
[Current VP: 25,350]
Draven felt the surge. His mana core expanding. Purple light visible through his chest for a moment. Bright. Radiant.
A-Rank.
At eighteen.
Unheard of.
And he was just getting started.
